Different, but so was the rest of the internet

4chan as a whole was already going through problems and died at least once by this point, so it wasn't pretty rainbows

4chan as a whole was ok with board cross posting for the most part, so LotR gifs were posted on /a/ just as freely as they were posted on /v/ and no one really gave a damn. Place was slower in general, threads on /v/ would last 2 days regularly, and /f/ was a lot more popular back then, seeping to front pages on every board with whatever new There She Is song Nanaca Crash would be reposted with high scores regularly

Banhammer was a threat on every board. Any notion of trolling was immediately met with a ban, and it wasn't a restrictive thing because the internet back then wasn't focused on being dicks, it was just the norm to not bait every post. Calling anything shit was immediately banned - people made witty remarks or congratulated others for being witty, so if anyone criticized they had to be a little smarter or lukewarm about it

Western stuff was a lot less the norm - Black Isle's death marked the end of the PC rpg era for that time and everyone was busy enjoying Final Fantasy and every other console release - Jap games in general was pretty much 90% of the board

Pic related, modified date was 2003, Azu Da and Waha was everywhere back then

I stumbled onto 4chan in 2006 looking for wallpapers, oh what a mistake that was.

Now I can't use any other forums out of disgust for the average user who are usually just bunch of sensitive chucklefucks looking for recognition with their totally unique avatar and signature and 23,000 posts.

True but that was because everyone was a legit nerd - social graces weren't refined but you knew the heart was in the right place. 2006 here. I was young and didn't appreciate what we had until it was gone.

It was less micromemey (a sorta In-joke that only people who frequent a single board would get, rarely seen outside of the board itself), Less links in threads and way more pictures. You saw a lot more "Raid threads" back then too. I mean, that's pretty much how Chris-chan and the PN became a thing.

The early days died with the whole "newfags cant triforce" era and /v/ also went through a shift about the time when people started calling eachother viral marketers and hype train threads were big. "waifu" as well.

It's not necessarily worse than what it used to be but it definitely is different.

trolling is easy to avoid, be rational down to earth and respond impartially to truth. people that are compelled to troll usually do so because perceived pomposity begets antagonism

you all get so caught up in the intentions of posters or attach yourselves emotionally to your opinions and shit that it results in ceaseless shitflinging

2006 here. A lot of things have changed, but it's still the same in many ways. We disliked conservatives/aggresive christians, we dislike SJWs now. There was always a contrarian actitude. People in the site were nicer than they're today, but there was still elitism in many boards.

I rarely browsed /v/ though, I lurked /b/ back in the day, for the most part. But from what I vaguely remember, /v/ hated GameFAQS back in the day. I don't even know why, but GameFaqs was pretty much the equivalent of modern-day NeoGAF back in 2006. That site was really frowned upon.

Uh, I remember that /v/ was all over Persona 3 FES when it came out too. Many people were hyped about it.

I actually miss the elitism. Sure it sucked for any newfags but it was sort of a ritual. Back then you could lurk for months before making your first post and it was so obvious when you were new that you were usually called out on it too, which made the boards a lot more homogeneous.

Now the focus has shifted from trying to please the core group of people coming here to trying to piss them off as much as possible under the guise of trolling.

I don't know, I'm going through a few things right now and I audibly laughed through some of this. I also got really sad because I saved this gif eight and a half fucking years ago.

Back then, I was so convinced that I was close to the light at the end of a tunnel, but I can't help but feel I got turned around at some point and I'm falling backwards.

Not sure what to do about that, but something's got to give eventually, I figure.

Slower in general so threads for more niche topics lived longer with more post. Green texting wasn't the default way to tell an anecdote so we got a lot more (relatively) well written though out post. The board was more Japanese oriented. Tripfags were pretty common. Honestly I think the worst two times for v were right before the /vp/ split, which was a site wide problem, and prior to /vg/

As much as 4chan paraded "lurk moar" and "rules 1 & 2", so long as you weren't trying to trivialize or otherwise halt discussion on a subject, or asking some legitimate stupid question, you'd be fine here. That isn't the case anymore.

>there are actually people here young enough to have never experienced the rage comic trend as it was first blooming

4chan started rage comics. Rage threads were fucking hilarious because they were always 4 panels, almost never used words, and always ended with the same punchline: FFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUU-

The formula was genius. Most people just used MS paint to draw the setup of each scenario so anybody could make a funny comic so long as it was relatable in some way.

I remember the day the "Okay" face came about. The guy who first posted it introduced it to /b/ and everyone thought it was fucking retarded, myself included, because it didn't seem to make sense. The detail in his face was really weird compared to the other rage comic faces (at the time just variations of the original rage face), and we didn't understand how it was supposed to work as the punchline. Eventually it made sense given enough examples and it just sorta caught on on its own. That was when people started making lots of difference faces, and this went on for probably a year or so before it finally happened.

Reddit saw we were having fun with this epic set of memes and decided to make a subreddit for it. Eventually it blew up as they kept making these fucking stencils of celebrities and trying to force them into comics that were getting insanely long and not even ending with an appropriate punchline, straying further and further away from the formula with every new post. Then the rest of the internet caught wind of it and it was all history from there. Now rage faces are just a relic of a time long since tarnished in memory.

2011 was an awful year.

That Chicken isn't the same one. He even admitted in a thread that he just took the name.

Old Chicken was a metalfag who moved to Ireland. I miss him.
