The optional content to her is pretty much just getting her on your team. In terms of story, she literally has only one point in the game. Stealing your materia and forcing you to explore the town of Wutai more than you otherwise would have.
Plenty of other games did optional content better. Even games that came out on the PS1 like Suikoden I and II did better.
