the first game is pretty much a standard rpg (even up to the "save an anime loli that the hero just meet" plot) but it looks and feels so cheap and scrappy, it's not really that bad but it feels like you are playing a ps1 launch rpg, you can't even hold more than 9 type of items of anything
the second one is a little better and is about a duo of childhood friend who kinda want to fuck other but aren't really there, you know, the dude goes on a portal in order to save the universe while the girl stays behind making item and shit and befriending lolis and it has a skill system where you learn shit from weapons and accessories similiar to FF9
the third game is about mercenaries and has a job system and it's a lot of fun because instead of the usual job system shit the jobs all play to the strenght of the game peculiar battle system so for example you get rewarded by scoring multiple hits so there is a "hit the enemy a lot" ninja class
atelier iris is probably one of the few series where 3 > 2 > 1 is factualy correct
