Starting at 100%, it should last about 3 days in sleep with the wifi off. It will last about a day if you leave a flashcard in it, like the Gateway. They constantly draw power and have no way to go to sleep like the system does. I normally just leave my Gateway hanging halfway out the slot whenever I close the 3DS because of this. Both my o3ds and my n3ds are pretty similar as far as the battery goes.
If you're not using a flash card and it's lasting so little time, then it's probably a shitty battery.
