Most of the time you're "loosely connected." Shit like Tyrants having different crowns above their name to give you an idea of how many players they've decimated, or being able to essentially join different groups, including friend groups, to have a 32 player chat room while you go about your usual business. While in a group, you can receive messages from each other that you can even upboat to the worldwide level outside of your own little group, and you'll also get "squad missions", where you will be assigned tasks to kill certain enemies, find certain items, etc. Although you may be in the same place on your own games, you won't show up next to each other, however completing these tasks is a group activity all the same, as everyone contributes. Other players' avatars can also show up in-world as temporary AI-controlled party members you can recruit for an hour or two.
Once you complete a few squad missions, world missions become available. These are four player multiplayer missions to defeat certain monsters, including World Enemies... Tyrants above even Tyrants. This one is a bit like Monster Hunter.
In addition, players in your squad can put up equipment they get from drops up for grabs, and everyone will be alerted. If multiple people vie for it, it'll be settled by lottery.

making a huge ass sandbox with nothing in it doesn't make it fun to play
best example I can give is Legend of Zelda, The Wind Waker. in that game there is a default camera that trails behind and adjusts relative to the enviroment, but an option to rotate it manually. while sailing, this gives a much plainer look of the ocean and boat, there's less things onscreen and is therefore less visually interesting
this sort of thing is important if there will be large amounts of time traveling across wide, empty areas multiple times over

There are ongoing squad missions that have you killing random monsters or gathering collectibles.
When you do enough of those, you unlock squad quests which are kind of like Monster Hunter multiplayer.

You set up warp points as you explore it, and later on you get a transforming mecha with a relatively high speed vehicle mode for further exploration.

It's an open world game, mate. There's shit to do everywhere. You've got a general hub to repeatedly visit, so yes I suppose there's technically backtracking, but it's not the same as "progressing backwards before you can progress forwards" like the term usually means. You're just retreading the same ground, much of which can be skipped over in no small part due to the warp system.

I'm going to answer pretty much any questions you may possibly have about the multiplayer. I'm paying it forward. Now I know pretty much all there is to know, so here's how it works. There are 3 core parts to the multiplayer features in Xenoblade X. I'll outline them, then explain them in detail, 1 by 1. Small preface : my terminology may not be completely "localized", though I'll try to use the English names for stuff where I'm aware of them.

>Squads are the "passive" multiplayer feature of Xenoblade X. At any moment as long as your Wii U is actively connected to the internet, you will be loosely connected with 31 other players also adventuring on Mira, making a 32 person squad that is actively connected to one another in a handful of ways. First thing of note, this does not mean you can see their actual avatars adventuring around the world a'la an actual MMORPG, but what it does mean is the following...
You can't see the actual players, but you can see NPC versions of their avatars adventuring around the world. When you see them, you can interact with them, and even invite them to your party. They will earn experience (for the actual player), and you gain a temporary, and possibly quite valuable (depending on their level) ally. I believe their membership in your party expires after a couple of hours so do as much as you can with them to get the most out of their help (assuming their character is equipped lvl/gear-wise to help you).
You can send messages out for your entire squad to see. You might do this for a few reasons, to give some advice about something you've found, or in general just send out a message because you're feeling social. Everyone in your squad has the ability to "+1" your messages, and messages that receive a lot of +1's will be broadcast to the entire playerbase.
You can hold a "Treasure Deal" that anyone in your squad can opt-in to participate in. This is sort of like trading but less direct. When you find an item you don't need but feel it would be a waste to just throw away, you can put the item up for a Treasure Deal to your squad. People will opt-in and basically it's a dice roll for the item between everyone who opted in.
You can also choose to see the achievement spam of everyone in your squad but this is a really spammy feature that many people actually turn off.

I just picked up a 3DS and Xenoblade Chronicles recently, and I honestly don't understand the appeal. Does the game get good? So far, I hate the combat (just run in circles around enemies and use the d-pad to select attacks when they get off cooldown), the characters are annoying and bland, and spending time in towns is a fucking chore since the UI for inventory management and buying and selling is atrocious. What's fun about this game? I want to like it, but it's almost singlehandedly making me regret buying a 3DS.
