It's not action, it's more psychological thriller. The Holy Grail War is just a backdrop for the character study of Emiya Shirou to take place, which is by all means one of the most fascinating in the medium (at least from what's translated).

Higurashi/Umineko also got me back into reading. I never read murder mystery stuff before. Now I do. Father Brown is like Umineko too, in the sense you are presented with a bizzare scenario to solve.

The ending was pretty good honestly, sure it was depressing but it suited the tone well, and was memorable.Sorta, it ends on a fucking cliffhanger, ties up the ending to the old one but also opens new shit to be tied up in the confirmed sequel.Thankfully a lot of the story is focused on a new mystery and the 1st's only really takes place near the end, but in my opinion I'd rather the series have ended with the first, or at least the story of it having done so.

Depends on what you're looking for.
The Holy Grail War isn't the focus of the story. It's just the framework that ties all the characters together. Yeah it's a big part of the story and the driving force and motivation for many characters, but the story isn't about winning the grail itself (Fate route kinda)
FS/N is really more about the ideals of heroism and justice, the consequences and pitfalls of such and ideal, and what it takes for a man to cast his ideals of heroism aside for the sake of one person.
Personally, I love stories about heroes so I like the VN. Shirou's a pretty cool dude and Saber is top tier waifu.
If you don't want to slog through the translation, there's always the Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works anime. Aired last fall and spring and is absolutely gorgeous.

You also ahve a good variety of bad endings. Stabbed to death, freeze to death, dying in an avalanche, suicide, murder, going insane, etc. Some are well done as they build up over time, others give plot details and as I said you can experience them from 2 perspectives. So you can an hero as character A, and then see character B discover their corpse and lose the will to live.
Again, I just loved the story, characters and atmosphere, how they change and interact with eachother.

Terrible writing with a lot of inconsistencies between routes. It's not uncommon in VNs for different routes to have different writers but it really showed here that the writers hardly collaborated with each other when they were writing their routes. The demo had better writing than the full game.
