Eh, they're okay. /v/ gets weirdly polarized about them for some reason with a lot of the discussion either being from huge fanboys of the series/waifus or people who hate the shit out of it. In my opinion it doesn't really warrant either reaction, it's just alright.
Battles are moderately enjoyable but not terribly strategic, writing is hit or miss with some decently amusing/cute bits mixed in with some cringeworthy ones, stories are reasonably short but there's a lot of postgame grind if you're that sort of person, and overall the games are just okay little low-budget JRPGs.
If you're interested I would just buy the first one and play a few hours of it. The later ones slightly improve on the gameplay but it's all pretty close to the same shit. You can pretty much figure out what to expect and whether you'll enjoy it or not in less than two hours and refund it if you don't.

Not really, though it depends on your definition of "toaster" and what settings/framerate you want. Obviously it's not exactly a new or graphically intensive game at this point, but its optimization isn't the greatest. It runs slightly worse than the original DR2, mainly because for some reason you can't disable the DoF anymore and the DoF in those games is a mild performance-hog, and DR2 wasn't the world's best port.
For reference I played it and DR2 on a laptop with a 330m at 1600x900/30FPS on medium settings back before I got an actual computer.

It isn't like a Mega Man game at all, but it is pretty fun.
It's basically a puzzle-platformer with only mild action elements (a handful of basic enemies and one boss fight) where the gimmick is that you switch different types of blocks on and off to explore each level. And there's a bit of a focus on replaying levels to beat the par time.
It's short and simple but pretty fun, and the soundtrack is fucking awesome. Also the girls are cute, if that's your thing.

Shadow Warrior is pretty good. It's a nice revisit to older style FPS games and it's actually fairly long, though linear. Later fights get boring because it's just adding more and more bullet sponge enemies into the mix
Zeno Clash I really liked. Really interesting locations, cool concepts and characters, fun and different combat but it's extremely short and low budget. I've 100% it in 7 hours. I would still really recommend
Mirrors Edge is fun. Great gameplay and parkour, can replay levels with some varying paths and stuff. Short game though, only a few hours

Lost Planet 2 has a rather bland single player (especially when a little over half the levels don't focus on fighting giant monsters but instead human soldier), but when you fight the giant monsters the game really shines, and with friends the fun multiplies exponentially. Highly recommend to get the game together with your buddies, or if you want to pay a little extra and feeling generous, buy it for them.

Pathologic is the epitome of cult classic games. Keep in mind that there's a remake coming out. But, supposedly, it changes a lot of shit and adds a lot of new shit, so you might want to pick up classic HD and give it a whirl.

Dark Forces is an FPS that everyone who likes FPS should play.

If we go back a while ago, Beginner's Guide is literally the single greatest walking simulator on the market. If anyone ever says "You should buy gone home, don't think of it as a game think of it as a book that's more focused on story :^)" Tell them to FUCK OFF because Davey managed to make a story that I got more engaged in and made me think more than pretty much any other game I've played. It's only a couple hours long, but it's $6 on the sale and I'd say it's worth it.

I haven't played Returns, but I heard it was a bit shit compared to other two. They're all self-contained stories in the same universe and at best you're going to be seeing some small references or cameos. Hong Kong obviously has the most refined core gameplay mechanics (especially the Matrix overhaul is great), but I personally liked Dragonfall's story, cast and setting more. Get both Dragonfall and Hong Kong and play them in that order. Or just get Dragonfall and if you've left wanting for more, buy Hong Kong during winter sales.
