I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with blacklisting, the worst you can say about it is that it has some PR repercussions depending on who you blacklist. Gawker is viewed as a tabloid (which it is) by a lot of people, so whoever blacklists them isn't going to lose a lot of respect. The only holdouts would be diehard gawkerfags, but their numbers seem to be dwindling and even some of the regulars call them out regularly. It might not have an impact in game sales, but it would have an impact on them as a company, their image and their future with investors and such. They're a company and in the modern era, especially in Japan, a lot of companies do care about their image. They might not buy the games, but they can harass them with negative feedback. While it might not hurt their sales of that particular game, or even future ones, it can hurt their overall image. As much as I hate it, social media and image and such aren't irrelevant to companies these days.

It's a different kind of hate, unless I'm missing something. Hating something for bad graphics or gameplay isn't something a company cares about in terms of their image with the general public. Hating something that will potentially get you branded as sexist, rapists, pedos and other such nonsense is something that they are concerned about and have to be.
And yes, it's pretty sad that this is the era we live in where hating something for the latter reasons has arguably more influence on a game than gameplay and graphics.
As for other games, it's true. But the reason is either because they are unknown, extremely niche stuff like VNs that barely anybody knows about anyway or just avoided attention of social media, or a certain part of it at least. I've seen more than that. And Kotaku, while horrible and shrinking, are still considered a major news site. It's not entirely the game itself, but the subject matter. Presumed sexualisation of women in gaming, which is becoming a pretty hostile topic in America in many forms of media. The fact that it was already an issue on a major gaming news site is already a sign that it's known enough and could blow up and gain negative press in a more mainstream eye too. If I were in charge of their PR and saw the content of this game, the political climate in America on the matter and the potential negative image it could theoretically create for the company if they are concerned about said image if it's known enough to already be on a major news site pre release, I would hesitate. I would be concerned. Capcom even altered certain things in SF5's beta because people complained they were a little too lewd, the new Fire Emblem is supposedly getting its boob slider decreased because of the image, so there's enough of a pattern to make the assumption Japan is becoming concerned with such matters. Certainly enough for me to believe the company itself.
They can't just censor or alter their game before release, because it's a pretty stupid idea for a game where said questionable content is the majority of it, so it would be pointless. So just don't release it and avoid the potential trouble.
