It's more in the spirit of GalCiv. Colonize systems, build on planets, progress science, etc. After playing a few campaigns you'll start to realize that it's actually pretty shallow, but it's streamlined and pleasant. Easily worth the seven bucks.
For what it's worth, I'm a big fan of 4x and I've definitely gotten more playtime out of Endless Legend, but I like Endless Space more. It's just pleasant.

It's battle system is like Etrian Odyssey mixed with the grid positioning of something like suikoden or trails in the sky, it takes the old school rpg mechanics of previous wizardry games and puts it in a fully realized 3d world full of old school dungeons and quests with a customizable party and deep and difficult battle system. Amazing game if you like old school rpgs.

Lemme put it to you this way. I pirated it to test my new PC's abilities. Ran it on max settings and was stoked because I could. Played it for a little bit longer to see if it was consistent. Stopped playing an hour and a half in because it was just so god awful boring. The leveling system is pointless, the enemies are simple, and the story is fucking laughable. I've been using it for over a year now with about 90+ other mods (both for FO3 and New Vegas) and I rarely have any problems with TTW itself.
Just make sure you read the readmes and install instructions for TTW and any other mod you use as well as sort your load order and make a bash/merge patch.

No, I pirated the DLC for 3 and NV when they were first coming out while owning the base game on Steam and they worked fine. Eventually bought them but there was never a problem. It's barely pirated. You're just moving the 2 or 3 files into your Data folder iirc
