So how do EX modes work?
I know EX mode isn't actually in the game but certain characters were shown using EX mode gimmicks, like Onion Knight job changing to Sage and Ninja, characters using Trance and Bartz getting job mastery.

Original FF3 didn't have named characters or party dialogue.
Original FF3 was very much like FF1, you had 4 mute "onion children" (Onion Knight was the starting class) and all of them looked identical at the start, just with different color themes. You had two red onion knights, one green and one blue. That's it. Dissidia represents original versions of the games, not their remakes.
That's why Ignus and Luneth are merely costumes for Onion Knight. Onion Knight is THE original FF3 "MC" (Red Onion Knight).

Square is probably the only other videogame publisher they're actively working with since Battlefront crashed and burned. So far the revealed worlds were all from recently released movies. They're even getting the original VAs and writing new songs for the Frozen world. Fuck, the plot to the BH3 world is written by the movie's directors. Plus they're circlejerking KH pretty hard in Disney Infinity, I wouldn't be surprised if they made a KH playset around the release to build up hype. The Mouse has it's dick deep inside of Square right now, so anything's possible.

They addressed XV in May or so. Noctis' playstyle will most likely revolve around his warping abilities and weapon switching, but he'll have to wait because most stuff about him is still a spoiler.
Squall suffers from a fear of time and being with people, because he lost Ellone at a young age. Those events convinced him to 'become stronger', and in his mind, becoming stronger means 'never getting close to anyone and getting hurt from the moment you lose them'.
Ultimecia relates to this (namely in Dissidia) because she wants to control time to prevent her losing anything. She wants to create an infinite loop so that she may forever be alive and powerful. In this sense, Squall and Ultimecia suffer from the same problem of fearing loss.
Laguna, on the other hand, is the foil to Ultimecia (and at first, Squall). Laguna wanted to be friends with everyone. He wanted to be with Julia, but he lost her. He wanted to be with Raine, but he lost her. Everything in Laguna's life has been losses, but he gets back up and tries to fix the life he has as best as he can.
Squall has to learn to become more like Laguna. That is the reason for the three of them.
Seifer, to an extent, is much more like Laguna, but corrupted by Ultimecia.

Never was able to get into FF12 because it played too much like an offline version of FF11 that plays itself. Though I will admit that I think Ashe has a nice design. Actually, all the girls in FF12 have good designs, it's the game itself that I find problematic.
Anyway, I don't consider the characters to be the protagonist if they're not the focal point of the story. Yuna is a side character to Tidus, as is Ashe to Vaan and Basch.
