Wow. It's been years. I'm an adult now, and I've married the girl I met on the game so many years ago. I wish I could still be young with her and play it again the way it should be, but it's too late. I hope the new players will understand and enjoy this. The game had a fun base, but it became so convoluted, and no one ever has to earn what they get anymore. It'll be funny to see if this new, spoiled generation is willing to experience this.

Of course it's a grind, but like some sort of twisted joke it was fun to put yourself into that devoted mindset and get with a friend to power through the slow levels. God help you if you died. Now it's hardly a game. You sign on, socialize, spend real money for stuff to trade, and every now and then kill those pesky monsters for five minutes in order to travel to a new map to sit on in your cash shop clothing and chairs.

What’s the point of more mesos? Will they be stuck to that server or will you be able to transfer them? Why even have a larger meso rate?
Does anyone else remember that brief time when, after an update, the glowing effect behind the Zakum helmet would fade when you moved and then come back when you stood still? No one believes me when I mention that happening. It lasted for a day or two, and then after another maintenance it was gone.

No it didn't increase drop rates of mobs, but you killed so many so fast and sucked everything from the map, rock up after leaving it on overnight and wake up to see a bunch of items.
Hacking and gachapon did ruin the game, the market was so fucking inflated it was ridiculous, many items went beyond the player's currency cap that certain items like white scrolls were necessary.
You couldn't get anything decent at some point unless you either bought NX, payed for gold, hacked, or grinded away for waaaay longer than is necessary.
Well not quite true, there were some profitable ways to make money like leeching or doing item runs like zakum helm, horn tail necklass and what have you.
And more risky methods like scrolling and buying low selling higher.

Personally I might come back to this, if its going the way of Single Player MMO. I can grind for hours in a single spot for just money and shit. The worst part of the game WAS having to deal with people.
I made a Kaiser Dragon Knight thing that was pretty badass to play. And from years and years ago, I had a Kargo pet that I liked to have around, which is another reason I might come back. Yeah, from the video it looks nice to have it a single player experience.

The reboot is really just another set of small balance changes. Trust me I'm a person who's still playing Maplestory. They do this shit every year. Nothing to get hyped about. Pic related. Arans are getting two revamps, one from this patch and another in about 3 months or so.

It's not exactly cash shop dependent, more like buying mesos via real money through the chinese goldfarmers and grinding shit daily until you hope to God your cubes actually give you good potential. For example, I made this belt myself without paying a cent nor bought any illegal mesos. It cost me 300m+ mesos, around 15 days grinding daily bosses and 20+ cubes from the Reward Shop to get it from Epic to Unique, and another 10 or so to get these lines. And these stats don't exactly suit for Warriors like Arans so either I sell this belt for STR% or recube.
If you're looking for a nostalgic maple experience you won't get it playing this reboot server.
Sure there will be no cash shop, but it will be exactly identical to current version 2015 maplestory. Full of shit.

Yeah, I got these clothes from an event from a long time ago that gave out permanent NX equips. Even with that, if you buy premium style boxes from the cash shop, you can get certain permanent NX equips that you can trade to another player through the free market or trading for mesos, so everyone can get NX clothes.

You don't need skill books to learn your Dual Blade skills anymore. They changed it so that all classes get all their 4th job skills immediately upon advancing. You still need mastery books to raise the level caps of each skill, but they are now homogeneous books that you can buy from the NPC stores for mesos.

The only good thing MapleStory has ever been good for is RMT. MapleStory destroyed my social life, but frustration over the slow grinding got me into cheating, which eventually made me learn how to program. As a senior in college majoring in CS, I have now completely paid off my college debts through RMT using cheats I coded myself. My parents, formerly viewing me as a failure as I was far inferior to all the other Asian prodigies, which I was constantly exposed to because I lived in a rich area, who had 2400 SAT scores and played sports and multiple instruments, are now finally proud of me.

Is there a list of additions and when they were added? I'm trying to remember when I started playing. It was before Pirate and Aqua Road. I remember the Henny hunting grounds getting renovated and the big signs added all around. I remember they changed noob island to some conveyor belt thing. I remember the panlids selling for like 200k (which was a lot at the time I think). I think might've started playing before they added Ludi (memory is fuzzy).
Anyone have a quick summary of what each year was like? I think I started around 2006 or so, it was right after Khaini was added. When did you all start?

I started playing before the start of that list, in beta.
Honestly the worst thing that happened to Maple was all the competitive min-max shit and the scrolls and cubes and whatnot. Maple used to be more about hanging with your friends, meeting new people, training together, doing PQs together, etc. But as soon as all the minmax shit started, people started talking less, people started getting selfish and caught up with making the perfect character, people started to just grind alone for hours, you were denied from PQs if you didn't have the best gear and optimal stats, and the community in general just became selfish assholes.
Quite sad really.

No you'll be able to make every class. No it will not reboot the game to pre big bang. No it will not remove new areas or anything like that. It will just rebalance the game and disable trading/cash whoring so you can actually DIE unlike modern maple where it's almost impossible to die. Also monster drops are special so they drop items you need. Basically you grind and get rewarded for it. Everyone has to grind. There's no trading or anything like that. It might be fun.

The best classes for bossing were NLs due to their high damage, Phantoms for their high utility and mobility, and Paladins because they could tank instant kill attacks, had loads of utility skills, and had a panic button that granted them invincibility for 30 seconds.

I came back just a few years ago, made a lumi and was 115 in like a week or two. It's a complete joke now. Really wish I could back in time to 2006. Had a lot of great memories with Maple as I'm sure many others did.

I played MS back in 2005-2006, but man, what is it with MMOs like this always fucking the mage class? This is on me too, since I know better but I always want to roll a mage because I want to cast spells and blow shit up. Also, I'm sure things went back and forth and changed any number of times since I played. Thing is though, in games of this type, particularly Korean ones, mages always get shit on.
As a baseline, here's how it inevitably goes: Early levels, average. Mid levels, distinct advantage. High level, shit-tier and the warrior class has better AoE. Endgame, even the fucking healers do more damage. What the hell? Some games even did stupid shit like make mages require more exp per level, or be extremely squishy but have none of the supposed increase in power to compensate.

30% stat equipment is worthless because even if you had potential it would instantly be beaten just by CRA/Cygnus set effects.
Facestompers are still alright, but if you have a Tyrant again it's beaten out, same deal Cygnus shoes.
At least the meso amount you have is decent, it could definitely respec you, but no way in hell are you scrolling or potentialing anything worth a damn.

No one teams up in reboot, because it cuts in to your profits, which you need desperately for cubes because there's no way to get them but buying them.

Money is extremely easy to get, you just need to grind it out really. Elite bosses give you Clean Slate scrolls which sell for around 12mil a piece, and then there's the rare Protection scroll you can sell for 120mil from them. You can even just do your two Zakums daily and not only have free Elixirs to use, but if you sell the Power Elixirs, Moonlight Dews, and Reindeer Milks you get as drops you'll make around 1.4mil a day. You can beat Zakum completely unfunded on normal as long as you're around level 130 with equips of that level.
To actually get equipment like that, it depends what you want.
For just potentials it's either grinding out the 10 or so bosses you can actually beat with bare minimum funding on a high level character every day for the maple points then making a throwaway character to buy cubes for yourself, or it's grinding bosses hoping for a Miracle Cube drop.
For scrolling it's just grinding until you make thousands of spell fragments and waiting for an event to scroll stuff with 15% scrolls, or making a bunch of money and paying someone to use their Anniversary scrolls on your stuff then hoping they don't run off with it.
For the actual item, you better either spend the next year playing the game, or throw a bunch of money at it and buy either the item itself or get enough items that let you kill Magnus solo.

Scrolling and proper potentials aren't intimidating, they're just a complete mess to actually get going since everything is so expensive, especially the cubes and the amount of time you have to put into the game just to get them if you don't want to pay actual money.
For fighting bosses, you're not going to fight anything higher than maybe Horntail, Chaos Zakum, and easy Gollux solo. Finding an actual group to tackle Pink Bean or higher is a huge pain in the ass and it's usually not worth the effort anyway. You're better off just grinding for better stuff at that point and buying the equips from the harder bosses to fight the harder bosses down the line.
Everything is doable without spending money, it's just that you have to spend months straight just grinding.

This summer, I was depressed and I got into a low rate private server (2x)
PQing was still faster than grinding, and I got SO DRUNK and kept jumping down to the golems that hit 10k. Shit was so much fun, no one kicked me because most of us were drinking or smoking, I love private servers.
I straight up grinded at Ghost ship for 48 hours straight on my spearman. Got DK, then went back and grinded out 4 more levels before passing out. It was intense, I'll never forget my temporary friends this summer.
We were all dreading school starting again, and it was kind of a last resort of fun for us all. For the first time, I led all the PQs and even a decent sized guild. It was great.

They got rid of that this year. You can pay 7mil at an NPC located in every major town to reset SP or AP, though I think AP is for a single point and not all of it.
SP is reset for free if the character received a major skill change at any point.

The other problem is that they are still using the modern versions of classes so they are a big mess of skills that are similar to other classes.

So it isn't even balanced for the reboot world anyway on GMS.
Reboot sound like the closest way to enjoy Maplestory again. It will still be able min-maxing though and you can't even be on the same map as someone else without "cc plz" being spammed. There is no fixing the social part of the game. R&J is the closest thing to being social and even then you are expected to earn exp, not talk. God forbid if you actually want to do the PQ correctly as well.

If anything Maplestory became simpler. Put your AP in your main stat, no exceptions. 1 SP into each of your attack skills then the rest into passive, then buffs, then special shit like Aran combo junk or whatever then you finally finish up your attack skills. The AP/SP may as well be fully automatic at this point if it wasn't for the fact abnormal status is something you should take care of if you are planning to boss.
They removed the complex leveling and just replace it with complex equipment leveling instead. So early game (as in everything before level 120) is simply wearing what you find. Set effects being the most complex thing to worry about and even then it will be replaced soon enough. You shouldn't have to worry about min-maxing until endgame.

Those screenshots are from staff members testing it out. There were 3 or 4 IIRC, and the screenshots were posted all over the old websites as guides/hype. I'm thinking it's just closed staff Beta, because the game just needed to be ironed out and translated from Korean.
They had "Closed Beta Tespia" which was open to players, and you could try out all the classes. That's what the NPC Cody was for. That was basically the dream back in the day.
They had an open Beta just before opening, too, and you got to keep your character IIRC. Hence the black maple bandana called "mark of the beta"
