Steampunk is fine so long as it's not retards in tophats with pointless gears and pipes. If it's a world that uses steam power instead of electricity as the main source of energy and has a brown tone, then it's fine. Open google and search Steampunk, and you get the obvious worst examples.
Cyberpunk is nice if it's sleek and futuristic, not just dark and slightly stylized. A black Desert Eagle is not Cyberpunk.
Both are good when done right, but both are done poorly most of the time.

Cyberpunk is the only -punk setting with actual validity due to the philosophy behind it. Cyberpunk isn't just a future world aesthetic, it's a purposefully dystopian setting evoking the actual fears for the future at the time it was conceived.
Steampunk is wholly invalid because it is a purely aesthetic setting with no rhyme or reason for why the world is steampunk - at least at the time, cyberpunk was a speculative look into the progression of time, if still a fantastical one by nature of being fiction.
However, there is a very narrow range of steampunk that has validity; namely, its progenitors found in Victorian science fiction writers like H.G. Wells and Jules Verne, who appropriately fantasize the possibilities of machinery of the era. These examples also possess a degree of philosophy and commentary. The Time Machine satirizes the development of the emergent classes of the Victorian era, the working and leisure classes, for example.
Modern steampunk is, with incredibly few exceptions, a purely aesthetic decision, coinciding with a very apparent lack of quality. One of these exceptions is Arcanum, which properly portrays a Victorian steampunk fantasy setting - one of grime and discrimination, absent of romantic idealism.
Other -punk settings have similar difficulties in establishing a philosophical narrative, meaning most of the focus is on aesthetic. One could argue that atompunk and dieselpunk have elements of the philosophies of the time period inherent in their design - space age idealism and industrial modernism. However, atompunk is primarily relegated in the present to either throwbacks to when such depictions were contemporary with the era depicted or as part of more broad satire of the era as a whole, and dieselpunk is almost entirely based in World War II fantasy media (Nazi superweapons and the like).
These reasons are why cyberpunk prevails as a setting, because the philosophical underpinnings are still very relevant in the present.

Something very, very important to note:
The vast majority of those movies came out in the 80s and 90s, where cyberpunk is aesthetically stuck. Those movies were not intentionally cyberpunk, they were just really 80s/90s sci-fi movies.
The closest example you have to a steampunk movie that wasn't intended to be a steampunk movie is something like A Trip to the Moon.
Most examples of cyberpunk as well as steampunk made today are kitschy garbage specifically trying to be the genre they are, instead of just being sci-fi that ends up being the genre due to the timeframe its made.

To be fair, cyberpunk settings without the validity exist as well. The problem we see in a lot of modern games is that they choose a setting without regards to WHAT that setting means, like what you've mentioned with Steampunk.

There's some confusion about the terms, so here's my atempt at a 20th century based retrofuturism classification:
1900s-10s: Steampunk
1920s-40s: Dieselpunk
1940s-60s: Atompunk
1970s: Weird transition decade between "radiation is magic" and electronics becoming mainstream
1980s-1990s: Cyberpunk
And of course there's also steampunk set in medieval periods etc, but this is just about basic retrofuturism.

Alien was released in 1979 and set in 2122(?). As of 2015 many of the technologies and aesthetics featured in the movie are already obsolete.
Since no writer can predict the future perfectly, and since technology in the 21st century is advancing so rapidly, pretty much all scifi more than a couple of years old can be categorized as retrofuturism or at least recognized as having retrofuturist elements.

That doesn't make a difference. It's not a generic suffix like '-esque' or '-sian' that doesn't exist on its own, it's an actual word with a history and a commonly understood meaning, a specific culture at that.
It's like if people started adding "-buddhist" to the end of everything. "The article had a Republican-buddhist slant" "That movie was very Michael Bay-buddhist".
It's not just weird, it's objectively improper

Just because the original definition of the word isn't theoretically jeopardized (and that is definitely debatable considering many of the people who misuse the word punk as a catchall suffix seem to have no awareness of it's traditional definition, and if everyone used the word that way an entire subculture would be forgotten) doesn't mean it's not concerning. And just because a word is used in a manner that ignores it's widely understood definition by a tiny group of people doesn't mean the word has "evolved"

This shit is so niche it's not like people aren't either A) fully aware that it has a different meaning than the word "punk" and don't mind or B) are self aware enough to call it out so that people do know.

In Blade Runner, the weapon has two barrels. One trigger fires a round through the larger barrel, which is chambered for some sort of rifle calibre, and is loaded through opening the top bolt with the bolt handle you can see on the side, lying along the cylinder.
