Steampunk is fine so long as it's not retards in tophats with pointless gears and pipes. If it's a world that uses steam power instead of electricity as the main source of energy and has a brown tone, then it's fine. Open google and search Steampunk, and you get the obvious worst examples.

Cyberpunk is nice if it's sleek and futuristic, not just dark and slightly stylized. A black Desert Eagle is not Cyberpunk.

Both are good when done right, but both are done poorly most of the time.
>>
Problem here OP is that nobody does steampunk correctly, ever.
>>

steampunk itself isnt bad but modern steampunk fans fucking ruined it by doing shit like that.

Steampunk has the worst fandom but the most potential in my opinion.

Cyberpunk is usually done better, but still not that great.

Either setting can be great if done right.

I think cyberpunk is easier to do well. Steampunk could be just as good I suppose but I've not had the opportunity to experience really well done Steampunk.

Cyberpunk can run the line between cheesy and serious and still turn out better.
>>

Dishonored is defined by some as "whalepunk," which is a little off-the-mark from Steampunk

I know cyberpunk as a genre is defined by both aesthetics and themes (transhumanism, megacorps, huge class division, etc.) but what themes does steampunk consist of?

Cyberpunk is the only -punk setting with actual validity due to the philosophy behind it. Cyberpunk isn't just a future world aesthetic, it's a purposefully dystopian setting evoking the actual fears for the future at the time it was conceived.

Steampunk is wholly invalid because it is a purely aesthetic setting with no rhyme or reason for why the world is steampunk - at least at the time, cyberpunk was a speculative look into the progression of time, if still a fantastical one by nature of being fiction.

However, there is a very narrow range of steampunk that has validity; namely, its progenitors found in Victorian science fiction writers like H.G. Wells and Jules Verne, who appropriately fantasize the possibilities of machinery of the era. These examples also possess a degree of philosophy and commentary. The Time Machine satirizes the development of the emergent classes of the Victorian era, the working and leisure classes, for example.

Modern steampunk is, with incredibly few exceptions, a purely aesthetic decision, coinciding with a very apparent lack of quality. One of these exceptions is Arcanum, which properly portrays a Victorian steampunk fantasy setting - one of grime and discrimination, absent of romantic idealism.

Other -punk settings have similar difficulties in establishing a philosophical narrative, meaning most of the focus is on aesthetic. One could argue that atompunk and dieselpunk have elements of the philosophies of the time period inherent in their design - space age idealism and industrial modernism. However, atompunk is primarily relegated in the present to either throwbacks to when such depictions were contemporary with the era depicted or as part of more broad satire of the era as a whole, and dieselpunk is almost entirely based in World War II fantasy media (Nazi superweapons and the like).

These reasons are why cyberpunk prevails as a setting, because the philosophical underpinnings are still very relevant in the present.

"Whalepunk" seems to be just a general term for a setting somewhere between steampunk and dieselpunk.

I would place it chronologically in the turn of the century, around the Edwardian era. A reminder that the British continued whaling until the Great War, and the United States ceased whaling in 1921.

Something very, very important to note:

The vast majority of those movies came out in the 80s and 90s, where cyberpunk is aesthetically stuck. Those movies were not intentionally cyberpunk, they were just really 80s/90s sci-fi movies.

The closest example you have to a steampunk movie that wasn't intended to be a steampunk movie is something like A Trip to the Moon.

Most examples of cyberpunk as well as steampunk made today are kitschy garbage specifically trying to be the genre they are, instead of just being sci-fi that ends up being the genre due to the timeframe its made.

Do you want atompunk or 50s-style retrofuture? Because there are lots of examples of the latter, but the former are pretty slim.

Steampunk works better as books. But even then, it's all so derivative it's embarrassing.

Punk is a redundant word used to describe these things. It only really fits the Cyberpunk style, not once have I played a 'Steampunk', 'Dieselpunk' or 'whalepunk' where you play as a 'punk'

Victorian Gentlemen with Brass Prosthetics aren't 'punks', nor was Corvo or Daud in Dishonored, vagabonds maybe, but not punks.

>They are meant to be trolls.
That makes sense, i guess.

Also why is Italy snakes and Greece a squid.
>>
>>317636441
>There's literally no punk to it.

NOW, ARGUABLY

You could very easily integrate 50s greasers into retrofuturist settings in order to have REBELS WITHOUT CAUSES in SPACE AGE ROCKET CARS, if you wanted it to be actually atom"punk".

The only reason Fallout is atompunk is because it incorporates Mad Max.

Don't fucking get me started on that shit. Steampunk should be so easy to pull of, yet it always ends up being "just glue some gears and cogs on a gun and paint everything copper brown" - always the fucking lazy way out when doing steampunk. Always.

So few times does something in any medium break away from the usual teachings of not-sucking-ass i.e Steampunk.

>>317632914
To be fair, cyberpunk settings without the validity exist as well. The problem we see in a lot of modern games is that they choose a setting without regards to WHAT that setting means, like what you've mentioned with Steampunk.

Other than that I 100% agree. I just wish we'd see more diverse game settings since the majority of them these days are fairly generic fantasy or generic sci-fi futuristic shit. They avoid bothering to create a world and instead just create something to facilitate the game. It makes it feel hollow.

we got the megacorps, but no cyberpunks to fight them, the future is ruined.

steampunk is stupid shit, i see it at every con i go to and no one has given a GOOD answer as to why they like steampunk or why it's a good setting.

Most people see the 'punk' as something of an artifact. These days, the term is used to more describe the setting. For example, Trigun could easily be called Desertpunk, Waterworld could be Oceanpunk, and Skies of Arcadia could be Skypunk despite none of them having stron anti-authority tones.
