I get maybe using that gear in cities to maintain order, after all you can't just unload into a crowd of rioting citizens without causing more panic. But why deploy that shit on an open battlefield? In the world of Dune personal 'Shields' have been created, which are basically invisible barriers surrounding a person, ship or whatever, that can repel anything that goes 'too fast', so basically all projectiles bar laser weapons.
However to allow the user the function, touch things etc - slower stuff can pass through fine - like melee weapons.
Even their combat style accomodated for "slower strikes" because striking too fast would trigger the shield and get slowed to a halt or outright repelled
Laser weapons cause mini-nuke type explosions when hitting these shields, killing both the shooter and the receiver, so usage is generally avoided too.

As Disney wants the film to do gangbusters at the box office overseas too, given how most films these days make their money not in the states, but overseas.
So they point blank told JJ that since he fucked them over, that they were redoing the film script so as to undo the damage done by JJ. Oscar Isaac's character is now supposed to be Daisy Ridley's love interest and Boyega is now going to be forced into a comic relief parody of Han Solo role.

Reason why they employed melee weapons was because of how shielders worked in-universe - they let a slow moving object pass while blocking fast moving objects. Anyone who spent a little bit of time consuming canon extended universe media like games and books should know that they have personal energy shield tech that can significantly reduce the effectiveness of energy projectiles(pretty much all anyone uses), but doesn't hold up so well against things like high frequency blades and sabers. There is definitely a niche for melee weapons in the Star Wars universe.
maybe it's not as fleshed out as dune where their shields detonate killing everyone if a laser hits, but there's still a reason.
So what's the deal? I haven't actually looked into anything about these new movies and the first one is already coming out. I'm pretty optimistic. So these storm troopers are remnant forces trying to take back control or something?

As technology goes up, so do defensive features. To counter said defensive features, projectiles can't be evolved fast enough. Melee, then, becomes a viable option since it's powered by the fighters newfound physical power.
Think of Metal Gear Rising: bullets, missiles and laser beams are nearly useless agains the robotic bodies and exoskeletons of the characters. They cybernetic strong frames and artificial muscles, on the other hand, are very effective in the handling of carefully crafted new melee weapons used to fight against similar warriors.
Guns are initially game breaking weapons, but their usefulness dies early in the technological game.

There's an embargo at the moment on what people can add to the canon. Mainly its the writing has to be based between Episode 1 and Episode 7. Theres some other stuff aswell.
The embargo on what can be made canon is gonna get lifted after the Blu Ray release of Episode 7. So we might see some of this stuff re emerge after then.
