The masterful illustrations and the fact that the author has left out individual character development has helped the duck family to become more of a metaphor for society, something similar to "Lord of the Flies," which could be taken very seriously, if not for the horrible page twelwe.

It was put into the book just for shock value. You may argue that it was used to more enhance the above mentioned society metaphor, but I disagree, it also made the ending seem very abrupt.
Overall, though, this story is something worth reading and I'll give it a strong 6 or a light 7 out of 10. Enjoyable.
