The story is less DA and more "We're not going to explain shit, but mention it offhandedly like you know what we're talking about". It has a lot of plotholes and stuff just happens because the writer assumes you know it all.
It's like when you do a Carol Run and you go to the ninja hideout get help from Spade, and then that help translates to instantly finding the thermal base and him showing up an entire level later to throw some cards at his brother. There is probobally an explanation there, but it's never given.

Well, Im 32 and grew up on sonic. I really liked this game a lot. Had the feel on the original ones. I mean yeah the voice acting aint the best, but it is passable.
My favorite thing is that they do not reuse enemies except for the last level(which makes sense in context).
Also, each of the three playable characters have their own special stages as well which shows off their abilities. All in all, pretty damn fun for the price.

There's a demo you can try out. But regardless, I'm a massive Sonic fan and my favourite game of all time is Sonic 3 & Knuckles and I've enjoyed Freedom Planet tremendously. So I decided to play through the game with Lilac in hard mode now and managed to complete it, but sadly the screenshot got fucked up because of the game running in full screen. So here's the results from the save screen in window mode. Ironically I died more times in Brevon's second form while only dying twice in his final one. Nonetheless the game still holds up and I can't wait for Torque's campaign to come out in December.

FD1 and FD3 are literally straight shots the vast majority of the time. And there are a small handful of times where the game EVER punishes you moving forward too quickly (BG and FD2 being the major exceptions), so by this point, the game is expecting that you've learned by this point how to handle moving forward at a brisk pace, and this should be highlighted by the fact that you're given a running start in the first of the Final Dreadnought stages, plus the fact that the third one is littered with speed boosters and Lilac and Carol both have attacks that make them invulnerable.
That shit ain't contradictory at all. What's contradictory is when the game builds multiple paths yet doesn't build a clear structure for which is faster or slower, but that's a whole different matter.

But pretty much every single level has multiple paths and optional areas with shields, useless shards, pointless 1-ups, or that card (or yin-yang? I don't remember) collectable. It's a game that's telling you to go fast, but then rewards methodical exploration. By the time you reach FD you're not conditioned to go fast, but to set your own pace. I remember many threads about FP, and they've all - almost without fail - had people complaining about the section with respawning enemies. Because you don't reach it and go "clearly I'm supposed to just run through". You reach it, kill a few enemies, realize you're not supposed to fight, and then run through. Contradictory design.
Also, what's with some enemies taking like 8-10 hits to go down? Makes no sense given the fast platforming that the game is trying to achieve.

It's a horde of enemies, man, and it happens all of once. There are almost no non-boss enemies that you need or have a pressing necessity to kill, and by this point you should know that fighting the fucking dumbass soldiers that have a bajillion frames of invincibility is an absolutely awful idea and should not be attempted unless there is no way to get away from them. Their high health and high damage output is supposed to make them scary/difficult to deal with, so when I had a fuckton of those assholes sent at me, it was readily apparent that I was not supposed to deal with them head-on, especially because Lilac has a fucking boost and it's a long, flat hallway.
