Gameplay feels like an after thought. Even for being bullet hell it's boring as piss. Undetale can barely be called a videogame. There's too much focus on the boring story with characters that aren't even captivating unless you have low standards in writing.

The "consequences" are all tied to the game's narrative. Same with the game remembering resets as well as the endings. It's all narrative driven. None of it deals with deepening the actual gameplay itself. It might as well have been a visual novel.
I got spoiled on most things about the game: Who asgore is, why he wants you dead, who toriel really iss, who flowey really is, what determination actually means, as well as how to beat undyne and muffet's battles peacefully, as well as having seen bits of of san's and the neutral final battle, and all of undyines.

It's very apparrent the game dialogue was written like one man's twitter feed, and the "internet" feeling of the dialogue and humor ruins any kind of timelessness the game might have. There are no strengths, weaknesses, resistances, buffs or debuffs which, as far as a turn based game goes, is pretty shallow. The defense phase only really ramps up on bosses, otherwise enemies are nuisances at most, especially since monsters always have 1 fast, guaranteed way to pacify it. Consider, say, SMT, where to pacify an enemy you have to either have a discussion with it or bribe it to get it to fuck off.

I think undertale doesnt have a bad system going on. When you equip different weapons your attack patterns change.
Both weapons and armors have special attacks like increasing healing effects from food or recovering health every thing.
Every enemy has a different way of attacking you and you got all these things that shake up the core combat too.
It also has neat role play elements like giving you the option to influence the enemy behavior through dialogue options.
It suffers from something completely different.
Its the length. The game is way too short to actually utilize different weapons and armors and shit. It feels like there's only like six weapons in the game or something.
With the game being as short as it is you wouldnt even be able to make more than that work.
The game generally feels too short and I think that many game aspects suffer from that, like the world building, characterizations and character growth itself.

Story has been done better and to death and offers nothing new or original. Where the Wild Things Are, Mother series, The Neverending Story, etc. Levels consist of generic game locals such as "lava world" and "ice world" and even their names represent that. Physically these worlds also cannot take place within the same setting as it's impossible.
Game is objectively bad because it locks you out of potential content depending on how you "played" and you're forced to mess with the game's files in order to even gain access, that's bad game design. Gameplay-wise the Attack mechanic is very bad and so is the dodge mechanic, and don't say "but you're not suppose to attack", if so then why is that even an option. Just because it's not the preferred way of playing doesn't mean you should half-ass it.
The last 2 points are being saved for later to see if you can even offer a proper counter point to the first two, because if you can't why bother wasting more time if you're just going to ignore it?

Some monsters don't really attack you at all.
Undyne was trying to kill you, ok. But the scenes imply that her resolve can falter when she sees you saving monster kid.
At the end it's your choice to kill her, or to try to reach out to her, seeing that she's kinda doubting you're some kind of monster.

Waterfall is really what got me into the games story actually, learning about the backstory and their drive to be free. And about difficulty, I had enough trouble to keep me challenged and wanting to see what new enemy I'll see in each new section. The very low encounter rate after Ruins makes each fight pretty rare too.
No RPG elements isn't an objectively bad points. Earthbound and MGS are big examples of 4th wall stuff but they were just minor one-off little touches, but UT contextualizes it a central part of the story and 'lore'. Something also does not need to be first of it's kind of be good, I've never really heard anybody say it's the first time anyones done it either.

The game shamelessly steals from every successful cult game and indie game and then panders to every Internet subculture while hamming itself into a meme frenzy. It also combines internet memeing with cartoon Sanic catchphrase memeing.
This self-awareness and calculation is ultimately what makes it weaker than Cave Story or LISA. It's not wholly innocent of popular culture, it panders and is aware of who it's marketing itself to--even smugly so--with its scads of barely tweaked and hidden memes.
It's "impressive" at first glance but will ultimately be forgotten because it's too derivative.
Toby's pretty smart and smugly self-assured while affecting something worthy of classic status because "he figured out the formula", and that kind of disingenuousness is offputting. I played it, all three routes, and I didn't find it to be spectacular in any way. The plot twists were interesting, and the lore alright. The characters were ok, but everything else about the game falls flat on its face.

Like, Flowey made my paranoid as fuck in general so I actually didnt trust anybody, but after killing her in the most amazing way possible I started to feel untouchable.
Past that point I mostly just played to see more of the world and figure out the secrets of it.

It's one thing to be locked out of content in gameplay itself as in "oh you cant go back to this area anymore" but when you cant even say load the game or start a new proper file because it's already ruined by your previous run is bad game design.
Here's an example: finished a "netural" run, want to do a pacifist run on the same save, nope too fucking bad because you accidentally killed 1 mob by accident because you're not desperately looking online on how you should be playing.

My opinion on undertale drastically changed as I played it. Before I played it, I felt that there was no point because I'm more into gameplay than story and the fanbase looked terrible. (And it still is.)
I really started to like it as I approached the neutral ending. After beating all 3 endings, I can safely say it is one of my favorite games. And that soundtrack, incredible.
Other games I really like: Portal, Melee, Terraria, Shovel Knight, Cave Story, Super Mario World.
I highly suggest giving it a decent try before attacking it. It's not perfect, but it's a lot better than most games I've played this year.
