Has Metal Gear conditioned anyone else to fucking abhor these things? Like, I have a serious ethical problem with these things just being around, and I tried picking one up but immediately had to drop it. I don't care how good the fatman is.

Look what these fucking things did to the world, why would I use one?

>I tried picking one up but immediately had to drop it

Why? So some super mutant can use it? You should have took that shit back to vault 111 and locked it up in there so it was buried. At least there you know that shit is safe. Your inactivity in handling the mininukes is just as bad as the people that use the fat man.

Way to be an enabler, you shitmop.
>>
>Not hoarding all nuclear-related objects and storing them out of everyone elses reach
>>
>>317518360
I sell them cause I love money. Also whatever makes less super mutants run at me holding them jesus christ fucking help me.
>>
I only ever used the Fat Man against Super Mutant Overlords in 3 because they are annoying as fuck damage sponges that otherwise take 5 minute constant streams of bullets to take down MEANWHILE your wasting your supply of Stimpaks just so you don't die because FOR SOME REASON when they wield Lazer Rifles it does a fuckton more damage then you will ever do wielding it.

Fuck, even the Behemoths are easier to take down because they're dumb as fuck. Yes I'm mad, and yes the Overlords still piss me off.

It's funny, because in Fallout 1, even the fucking terrifying hive mind abomination Master refused to use nukes as a weapon for MORAL reasons.

"This is our Master's weapon of last resort. If we find an enemy we cannot defeat in battle, then we will destroy them with this. But I doubt this will ever happen. Even our Master does not want to unleash the dreaded power of the atom again!"

And then by Fallout 3 you go around nuking everything with mini-nukes and the megaton bomb while HACKIN AND WHACKIN AND SMACKIN is playing in the fucking background
>>
>>317518360
But Metal Gear doesn't really even show the impacts of the Nuclear arsenal, the furthest it ever got was deterrence. I mean, they used a bloody Davy Crockett in MGS3 and its effects are barely shown anywhere in the game.
>>
>>317519717
Well, yeah. Bethesda fundamentally misunderstood the tone of the games.

Because Bethesda had to go full on lol whacky and introduce fucking nuclear catapults.

Not even some type of Davey Crockett knock-off or anything, a fucking shoulder fired catapult. For nuclear weapons.

Not to mention Bethesda was under the impression that the Great War was fought with fucking WW2 style fatman/littleboy type bombs instead of goddamn nuclear ICBMs. Because lol whacky 50s setting.
>>
>>317518360

I hope you don't plan to side with the BoS then or you're going to have a heart attack.
>>

Oh and I almost forgot about the massive fucking retarded mecha that hand tosses an unlimited number of nuclear footballs because why the fuck not lol whacky 50s amirite
>>
>>317520003
If they had waited just a bit longer, it's quite possible fusion reactors could have become efficient enough to be mainstream and therefore eliminate the issue the war was being fought over

That being said, I doubt conventional warfare would have the same impact on the planet as Fallout's ridiculous amount of ICBM neutron bombs
>>
>>317520471
If we're going down this route with the amount of shit that got nuked there should be a lot less buildings standing and random foot items/whatnot sitting around unharmed.
>>
>>317518360
Are you retarded?
>>
>>317520471
When I sided with the brotherhood I actually got a little perturbed at the fact that Liberty Prime was literally just pulling an infinite amount of nukes from his back that were the size of a smart-car, and whipping them at the ground in front of us. Like holy shit what the fuck is going on who thought a shitty escort mission was what I wanted to finish this bullshit story arc with the worst faction in any game. Christ
>>
>>317518360

>>
>>317521450
Considering he brought up metal gear it was obvious the talked about the meta of bombs.
>>
Why was the bomb in Megaton a fatman style bomb? And why does it have a logo on it that looks sorta like the Vault-tec logo?

Did Beth forget that ICBMs were used in the Great War? And that the Great War didn't happen in the goddamn 50s?

Did they seriously try and have a fucking Chinese bomber cross the entire continental US to manually deliver a fucking antique nuclear weapon that is over 100 years outdated by that point? And the bomb doesn't even explode but still produces a fucking massive crater?

>>

>>
>>317520349

I don't think a nuke launcher is out of place in the Fallout universe, or Liberty Prime for the matter. The game is very clearly a parody of 1950s jingoism and that stuff fits perfectly. The realism argument goes out of the window when you have shit like radiation turning people into zombies.

What is out of place however is how despite the destruction nukes caused no one seems to have a problem with using them. The BoS in Fallout 4 sit and rant about how they need to destroy synths because of the harm they can cause humanity but they have no problem nuking the shit out of Boston with an arsenal of nuclear warheads and a giant robot? The same BoS who hate wastelanders because they don't want irradiated DNA in their ranks?

Bethesda are just shitty writers. There's no reason in a post-apocalyptic world all the organised factions like the BoS and the Enclave would be using weapons of mass destruction. Even in the previous games the most evil factions had more sound motives. The Master's Army wanted to evolve everyone into super mutants so humanity could thrive on an irradiated world, while Caesar's Legion just wanted Hoover Dam to power their infrastructure. The only faction that should reasonably want to use shit like nukes are raiders or dumbfuck tribals.

A giant communist hating robot held under the Pentagon fits into deus ex, not fallout.

Contrast the Master to liberty prime. One of these were obviously made for children raised on memes, and created by people who didn't understand the franchise they'd bought.

Can you guess which?

Speaking of the Master, he wouldn't ever appear in a Falloutscrolls game. He's too sophisticated and mature for Bethesda's target audience.

And you get a suitably fallout narration if you actually launch the nukes. The player character voices disbelief about nuclear missiles.

The NPC who has them calls them 'America's voice.' He had to 'speak to history' to even be convinced that they existed.

It's not a casual nuke catapult that any random raider can pull out their ass.

Shit is cancer. Worse is when you wear power armor and a missile/fat man instantly destroys most of the pieces.

While I don't want to advocate making the game easier than it already is, I think explosive damage needs to be toned down. At the same time, up the damage of all weapons, so that enemy humanoids always die in 1-3 headshots based upon weapon, and you die in a few shots too.

Debatable. I can see a handheld nuclear device thanks to Fallout's general obsession with nukes prewar. I can see some american general going "OKAY, SO WHAT WE NEED ARE SMALL NUKES THAT CAN DESTROY REGIMENTS AND BUNKERS, BUT NOT OUR GUYS. EGGHEADS, GET ON IT"

>Or Liberty Prime

No, not even close. Not even a little. It maks no sense at all. Giant Robot's are not a 50's thing. That is more of an 80's or 90's idea of having a giant robot fight wars for you. Robots in the 50's are like Mr Handy's, where we thought robots would eventually do everything for us.

And even if you take it out of what generally fits in Fallout, Liberty Prime is so fucking stupid. The idea alone pisses me off, it sounds like some fan-fiction bullshit.

"SO THERE WILL BE A GIANT ROBOT UNDER THE PENTAGON AND HE HATES COMMUNISTS. WHAT IS THE POINT OF A GIANT ROBOT IN A WORLD DOMINATED BY NUCLEAR BOMBS? WHO CARES! HE HATES COMMUNISTS!"

I mean a mini nuke should be more than just a big explosion. You're destroying stuff at the cellular level, I'm expecting nuclear weapons to be both rarer and much, much more deadly.

Crysis did the nukes right imo, all you need is add a fuckton of radiation so if you were to pass by the area where you used the nuke youd die after a few seconds.

Also nukes are the main reason why WW3 didnt break out and probably won't.

>People think Fatman launchers make no sense

Seriously? The game is set in the 50's. In the 50's, the world is obsessed with nukes. They put nuclear material IN FUCKING FACIAL CREAMS IN REAL LIFE. The alarm clocks have nuclear material in them. There are sodas named after nukes. Cars were nuclear powered. There is plenty of precedence to developing small nukes for use by infantry.

That doesn't mean that they should be as prevalent as they are, of course. The Fatman should be extremely rare, only used by a few enemies, and the ammo should be even rarer. Like coming across 10-12 in a whole play through.

Instead you find tons of fatmen and like 100 nukes.

Except no. Even in FO1 and FO2 military technology progressed and advanced similarly to ours. Automatic shotguns developed in the 80s are explicitly mentioned and present.

I'll give you a hint: the Great War nukes weren't used in bombers like in WW2. They were on nuclear ICBMs. There is a good reason the Great War only lasted a few hours.

The major technological divergence in the Fallout universe was that they never developed microchips and other miniaturization technologies. That is why the Platinum Chip in New Vegas was such a huge deal; it was the beginning of microchip technology and miniaturization brought forth by House.

That, and man portable nuclear launchers are a real thing deployed (but obviously never used) in the 50s. It doesn't seem so silly that if the 50s mindset remained into the future that a handheld version would be looked into at some point.

>>
>>317530264
The idea for nuclear ICMBs was around before WW2 ended. I remember there was some talk of trying to strap nuclear bombs to the V2 rockets Germany was using. Those being developed are not out of the question.

And it's less about what technology is present, but instead how it is applied. They have advanced robotics that are used to make what are essentially robotic maids and butlers, because that was an idea of the 50's, robots taking care of everything. Nuclear power is used in cars and everything else (though they also had the justification of fuel running out), because Nuclear power was seen as the future in the 50's.

The culture as well is incredibly similar to 50's america. The language used, the red scare, the patriotism. It's definitely 50's america, in the future.

Obviously, as human beings, we're not going to be able to know what would happen if America kept on it's path in the 50's, but they've tried to emulate some of it.

They weren't man portable, and it wasn't some retarded catapult that shot it 20 yards. A tactical nuke is still going to have a massive blast radius, the mini nukes in 3/4 are smaller than a 250 conventional bomb, which were commonly dropped from fighters during WW2.

I'm assuming you're talking about the Davey Crocket system, which wasn't somethign one guy would carry around, and he didn't launch it from his shoulder. The fallout universe fears nukes, and for good reason. They wouldn't employ shoulder firing catapults to nuke each other's raider settlement.

Even if they had the technology, it would be exclusive to forces like the master's army, the brotherhood, and the enclave, and they wouldn't want to use it, either. See the master's views on using the nuke he actually does have.

If you liked fallout 3 its impossible not to like this one which puts me in a bit of an awkward position since I fucking hated fallout 3 but I like this one

Seriously though bethesda abandoning their stupid attempts to make an RPG are for the best, skills in fo3 were basically just the same as the perks, could max them all out easily and speech was still random chance you could save scum

The only difference now is that there isn't a lot of dialogue (which lets be fucking real, always sucks in bethesda game since their writing is illiterate vietcong tier), its basically the same amount you'd get in a standard story driven shooter, but you get to pick some meaningless replies, and the gunplay is vastly improved to their previous showing

Imo just pirate it, I put 30 hours into it and I'm not even ashamed because they cut so many corners

>They're just hanging around the wasteland for any dumbass to find 210 years after the nukes fell, sometimes not even in military locations.

That has nothing to do with the concept of the fatman. That is poor implementation, which I will definitely give to you. The ammo for them is far, far too common.

>They exist, and people just go around using them for no reason.

People using weapons is 'no reason'? They're a devastating explosive device guaranteed to kill whatever the fuck is in your way. Makes sense to use it to me.

>>317532049
>The fallout universe fears nukes, and for good reason. They wouldn't employ shoulder firing catapults to nuke each other's raider settlement.

First of all:

1. The Fatman was a PREWAR INVENTION.

2. Even if a majority of people fear nukes, that doesn't mean some batshit insane Raider high off his ass on Jet won't use it to blow up his enemy.

3. I AGREE that they ammo is too numerous. The fatman should definitely be rare, and the ammo even rarer. Bethesda implementing the idea poorly has nothing to do with the idea being good or not. The fatman is a decent idea that fits in with the fallout universe, but there is too much ammo everywhere for it.

>Why was the bomb in Megaton a fatman style bomb?
50s-inspired aesthetic.

>And why does it have a logo on it that looks sorta like the Vault-tec logo?
Coincidental resemblance?

>Did Beth forget that ICBMs were used in the Great War?

No, there was a silo in that base in the NW of the Capitol Wasteland. Same one with the T-51b. When you try to launch, it fails.

Normally I wouldn't take this as an indication of faulty tech, but when robots have gone 200 years without maintenance and still work, and nukes still work after the same period of time, it calls into question the reliability of ICBM in the Fallout universe.

Plus, the US had bomber superiority in the 50s, which combined with the "the bomber will always get through" mentality meant that the USAF didn't end up focusing on ICBMs until the 60s (first operational US ICBM became operational in '58).

Combine that with the accuracy problems early ICBMs had, and that computers in the Fallout universe hardly ever maybe never used IC chips which because of their cost didn't catch on until NASA used them to save precious space in Apollo capsules, meaning that the size and weight of transistor tech is restrained by the "tyranny of numbers".

>And that the Great War didn't happen in the goddamn 50s?
Again, inspired by them.

>Did they seriously try and have a fucking Chinese bomber cross the entire continental US to manually deliver a fucking antique nuclear weapon that is over 100 years outdated by that point?

As I said, bombers were still the prime means of delivery because of shitty ICBM tech. And the PRC was behind the US in tech, so they might not even have had ICBMs that could launch in any significant numbers.

>And the bomb doesn't even explode but still produces a fucking massive crater?
I guess it dropped from really high up and was made from adamantium so when it hit it said "No ground, you move", but the detonator was fucked.

Legit issue there.

With the perfect set of perks & mods it can do 440 damage.
Otherwise you'll be limited to *just* 340.

For comparison, the bugged-out multi-effect double-stacking AOE weapons do 170-280 damage.
Bottlecap mines are 300.

I agree entirely with this. It's honestly not that bad of an installment. The writing is sub pat but it's fucking Bethesda what do you expect. Just about everything is a step up from fallout 3 and the gunplay is actually fun. If you go into expecting something like new Vegas you're bother retarded and setting yourself up for disappointment. Just looked it up. 98 you can get, counting DLCs. Plus vendors stocking them.

>Mini nukes exist, but are limited supply and never respawn.
True, only 14 in the base game, vs 80 in vanilla 3.

However, there are multiple Boomers who get a new mini-nuke in their inventories every 72 hours. Stocked by some vendors. GRA DLC makes them even more commonly stocked, and adds even more powerful variants.

NV didn't do much better if you think about it. Especially considering how nerfed the Fat Man was. I didn't even bother using it in NV, while in 3 it was used sparingly and with great joy.

There's zero vendors who sell mini nukes in vanilla new Vegas.

Having GRA installed makes the gun runners robot sell special GRA mini nukes, which can only be fired from the GRA fatman once it's been upgraded, and the GRA unique fatman, and none of it's stored until you hit like level 20.

It's a big deal when you find two mini nukes in the deathclaw infested quarry. In fallout 3, finding stockpiles of 5+ mini nukes is routine.

Nukes don't use dynamite as the trigger mechanism. They're made in a way that physical trauma doesn't detonate them, unless they use a groundburst fuse, and those are insensitive enough that not much short of hitting the ground at terminal velocity will trigger the fuse. Not to mention that nukes aren't armed until the last possible second. In fact, shooting explosives in general won't blow them up unless they're intended to do so or the explosive is super volatile, like dynamite.

But you're seeing it the wrong way, the game doesn't have a 50s influence, the 50s culture is a result of the lack of research into smaller components and just a complete focus on warfare technology. It's just a consequence, not the driving force of the game, like Bethesda seems to think.

I've been playing Wasteland 2 recently, and I have to say, that game has more than its fair share of problems too. Thematically and in writing terms it's lightyears ahead of Bethesda, but Unity is an ungodly shitty engine, you can lose the fucking game at the character creation screen, combat is astoundingly unbalanced (initiative, or whatever it called it, is the god stat, have that high and you win, since you can get multiple turns per enemy turn) and reported % chances are total fucking lies. Every single fight there are multiple "2% chance" weapon jams.

I've also run into a few weird bugs, like suddenly being unable to move the camera and the entire ground turning into a disco multicoloured square floor. And the UI is ugly.

Pretty much my whole time with the game has been okay but made me wish I was just playing Fallout Tactics instead.

This is it, this is the most stupid and least informed post I've ever seen on /v/.

The whole fucking conflict in was due to petroleum was running out, gas was ridiculously expensive and hardly available to the average population, it was for military use, also, microfusion was developed once it was too late for it to make any difference, the world was already fucked.
>>
>>317532049
Mini-nukes are widespread. I'll give you that. I will also give you that more often than not, Bethesda misses the point and does retarded shit.

But the concept of the Fatman in the Fallout universe remains sound, and the argument that "nukes killed billions and fucked everything, so everyone will be terrified and refuse to use them" is bullshit.

Yes, the Master refused to use nukes on moral ground, but that doesn't mean everyone shared his views. He wasn't a generic doomsday machine cartoon villain. Using full-size nukes would make it more difficult to achieve his goals, and whether his "morality-based" stance on nukes followed that realization and he figured he could use it to make himself look like a good guy, or if that stance predated it is anyone's guess.

BoS are all about muh tech being too dangerous for anyone to use but them. They'd use a Fatman if they had to. It's nowhere near as destructive as a full-size nuke, so as long as they're not concerned about collateral damage they won't have any problems.

Enclave would sure as shit use a Fatman to exterminate anyone tainted by radiation.

You've drawn a false equivalence based on the idea that mini-nukes and nukes using nuclear energy in an offensive manner. One wipes out a city, another wipes out a city street.

Wastelanders would absolutely be reluctant to use a nuke, but a mini-nuke is so much less destructive that no vaguely rational mind would consider it within the same league of horrifying destructive capability as a full-size nuke. And at that point it's just a really powerful explosive with a short area-denial effect that goes away in a few hours.

You also get skill points so slowly that anything misspent is likely to sink your whole team unless you're minmaxing with prior knowledge and somehow fucked up a click or something.

During the peak years of the Cold War, US and Soviet bombers were on patrol 24/7. How hard is it to believe that in a time of war between nuclear powers, some bombers were loaded with nukes standing by for the Big One? It would only take hours for them to reach their targets if they were already in holding patterns.

ICBMs certainly played a role, but it was almost as certainly a lesser one compared to bombers.

For instance, Vegas got 77 warheads, but it wasn't as high priority a target as key economic and political targets like LA or DC. The only counterforce target there was Nellis, and that was farther inland than most land-based bombers could reach, and far enough away from China that any bombers on the ground at Nellis would be late to the party. It would be a waste of bombers to not hit the low-hanging high-value-fruit the hardest.

ICBMs were likely used for targets of lesser value that it wasn't practical to use bombers for.

Because the resource wars.

Because fuel was hideously scarce. There would not be 24/7 air patrols. Even if that where the case, they would still need considerable logistical support and other operations to go from mainland China to the west coast of the United States, much less the east coast. Again, this is based upon your assumption that the Great War was fought primarily with 50s era bombers, their operational ranges, and antiquated fatman/littleboy style nuclear armaments that would be well over 100 year old antiques in 2070.

The Great War was kickstarted when American soldiers in power armor touched down on mainland China.

Massive ICBM launches from China, then MAD retaliatory strikes from the United States.

All of it over in about 2 to 3 hours tops.

If you mentioned anything like nuclear submarines with missile capability then I would find your position more tenable. As it stands the supermassive fleet of bombers that can cross the world solo and hit all possible targets in the US is not feasible.

The Great War was conducted almost exclusively through ICBMs, with some submarine launches also possible.

Californium251 has a tiny critical mass and a fission reaction from that would come to around 10 tons of TNT. That's not a genade explosion anon. That's a big fucking boom.

The davey crocket system we were talking about, the smallest one ever built (as far as we know) yeilded a blast equivilent to 15 tons of TNT. The warhead on those wasn't much smaller than the mini nukes in 3 and 4.

tl;dr the debate between high yield and low yield is moot. 10 tons of TNT is not "a glorified grenade". How can people really be this stupid?

I mean, carbines are technically different than rifles, but are in essence just shorter rifles, and pistol caliber carbines are a thing.

In Bethesda's extremely broad definition of a rifle (any two-handed gun,) a carbine fits the bill.

just think of a big metal shield around a small bomb. throw anything hard enough at anything, itll go through it.

in this case, larger bunker bombs dont actually do much explosive damage in its own right. most of the damage comes from something called spalling or something, where the material you sheer off in the concussive impact it the dangerous part.
basically, if youve got 15 feet of solid concrete above you as protection, then the bomb dosent need to hit YOU. it just needs to cause the 15 feet of concrete to fall on you.

The whole idea of the oil shortage resource wars, the "Punk" look to most postwar things, and The insane level of lood and violence and tits in the games is more of a '70s thing than a '50s thing. >A role-playing video game (commonly referred to as role-playing game or RPG, and in the past was also known as computer role-playing game or cRPG) is a video game genre where the player controls the actions of a main character (or several adventuring party members) immersed in some well-defined world. Many role-playing video games have origins in pen-and-paper role-playing games[1] (such as Dungeons & Dragons) and use much of the same terminology, settings and game mechanics. Other major similarities with pen-and-paper games include developed story-telling and narrative elements, player character development, complexity, as well as replayability and immersion. The electronic medium removes the necessity for a gamemaster and increases combat resolution speed. RPGs have evolved from simple text-based console-window games into visually rich 3D experiences.

The institute is a faction that wants to control the wasteland from the shadows.

To do this they kidnap and replace people with synthetic people.

They've also played a role in three massacres as well as having their synthetic robots ordered to kill anyone on approach.

Some people might think this is morally reprehensible and try to have them explain their reasoning.

They believe they're doing what's best for humanity.

You can't debate them on this point.

But in a game where the world has been destroyed by this enigmatic "atom bomb" so powerful there are cults worshiping it, dismantling that concept and turning it into a "so funny XD" firecracker is counterproductive and retarded. >its a nuke
Yes. A rifle also functions on the same principle as a 105mm tank gun. Totally the same thing and anyone who doesn't feel the same emotion on the same scale for both objects is an inconsistent Bethesdrone faggot.

That's what you sound like.

>it makes a mushroom cloud
Anything that puts out enough smoke will make a mushroom cloud. When I was going through CERT training, we practiced putting out small fires. Guess what I saw the smoke from a fire turn into?

>it leaves rads behind
For a few hours.

>it's blast is smaller than a handful of conventional explosives

But you only need one mini nuke to fuck a Deathclaw instantly, compared to 10 hand grenades to kill him far less instantly and with way more time for it to close in fuck the user's shit up.

In a situation where
>You have on hand an amount of explosives comparable to a mini-nuke in their cumulative power
>You need all of them
>They're going to be used on one target
>The target will only present itself as such for a limited amount of time (whether that's because it's going to kill the user if they're not fast enough or time is otherwise a factor)
Then it's more practical to use the mini-nuke. Whether it's a deathclaw coming at me or MGSV's "Backup, Back Down" mission, when time is of the essence, I want to neutralize the target with all possible efficiency.

>nah this is fine it doesn't fuck up the atmosphere or base concept at all, its goofy and fun! whats fallout 1 and 2?
Nice strawman.

We've got miniature fusion reactors small enough for a suit of armor. How hard is it to believe that a larger one can power a plane?

And why do we assume that bombers are solely subsonic?

US forces were in China for years before the Great War.

Still a matter of hours for bombers to reach their targets. Especially since China doesn't have high strategic depth once you hit their coast. From there you can reach most of their population centers in half an hour or less.

Bombers loitering around Japan could reach Beijing in less than 2 hours, especially if they're nuclear-powered and supersonic.

There are no indication of SLBMs in Fallout to my knowledge I haven't played 4 yet. Not evidence of absence, but evidence of less importance in a nuclear triad at least.

HOWEVER, I'd like to imagine something along the lines of Project Pluto being used. It's certainly Fallout enough.

use suppressed weapons/mods or melee and get the sneak perks and it's pretty much the same as previous games, provided you use stealth tactics and make use of the environment

there's no perk for negating the armor weight sneak penalty through, so you'll need to put muffled on all your amor to make it shine (or not wear any until you need it)

it becomes pretty powerful once you get sneak up to rank 4 (iirc) which negates the sneak running penalty
