They can't be infinite, since there's a finite number of locations on the map. I know that helping already established settlements is probably infinite, but not founding settlements. Honestly I'm wondering when this shit will be over as well, I thought the Mirelurk Queen fight would be the last one but I've done about 20 more after that and there's still no end in sight. Can anyone confirm what the end-game to this questline is?

Having said that, if you want a good way to form relationships with companions, the tedious as fuck Minutement quests are a really effective way to do it.

No. The lock happens right before you board a Vertibird, it tells you outright "if you board this, the institute will forever hate you".
The railroad swerve is just a mission before that, so you could still join the railroad aslong as you wait before accepting the mission to kill them

After a while, ALL locations will reset. This includes the loot inside, the enemies and even locked doors.
If you loot the guy across the bridge near sanctuary, like 10 hours later, he will respawn with a full inventory.

Tenpines Bluff, the Zeta-fuckingwhatever just north of it and Finch farms. Without fucking fail it is these 3 settlements 90% of the time. And it's always. ALWAYS. Super mutants in Franieul hall, Raiders in the Satcom Array, and Raiders in the ironworks. I even have 8 turrets at every one and still out of all 20 settlements those 3 are attacked without end. Goddamnit Todd.

You don't need crit meter, really. Crits can happen any time. The VATS crit is just a guaranteed slow-mo one. I can only say this because I've melted people with plasma without using VATS.

You can get melee crit kill animations without VATS. You have to use power attacks. I rarely get to do it though, since I can't get good melee/unarmed damage. It just sucks. That, or I suck at melee.

The BoS are real assholes in this game (They're basically /pol/), way more than they were in Fallout 3, and the Institute is just as fucking bad, be it for different reasons. The Minutemen and Railroad seem like the only factions out for the overall benefit of the Commonwealth. Having said that, I don't really want some sunshine and rainbows bullshit happy ending either. I want a bomb to drop, just not on the Commonwealth itself.

Some areas do and some areas don't. 99% of places do respawn after a while, some quicker than others. It's good in that I think it adds more of a living feeling to the world but it's bad because it respawns the same type of enemies. It would be great if you cleared a bunch of raiders, came back and a bunch ghouls or super mutants or something moved in instead. But it's always just whatever was originally there.

It was added probably because people had hard time to track which bandit cave they already looted. They're frankly speaking, easy to confuse, since they're populated with same leveled enemies, and contain same leveled loot.

We don't really know a lot about the situation in DC, other than the fact that the BoS and Outcasts have been reunited for a few years and they're apparently confident enough to send small scouting parties out into other states. Danse's group is the third such group to be sent to Boston, but I can see why the BoS wasn't immediately rushing over there.
Their first recon team comes back with a lot of technology. Still not convinced enough to send in their most valuable military asset, they send in a second team. The second team goes MIA and is assumed lost. A third team, Danse's team, is sent to set up a communication line between Boston and the Citadel or Prydwen. This, like ascertaining what became of their second team, is just a secondary goal. Mainly, they're there to investigate the institute. The first team probably returned with news about Synths and the Institute to the BoS, which is why they were so interested.
The Commonwealth is a bit more organized than the Capital Wasteland, though; and they're resistant to outside influences swooping in and promising to save them. The people in D.C. were in a shitty situation, but the Commonwealth doesn't have it quite as bad. So that's why the BoS isn't immediately welcomed. Also you wiped out the last of the Enclave in Fallout 3. If you let him live, Autumn might be out there somewhere, I guess.

I am considering making a mod that makes the main quest a bit more dynamic.
You know how in Fallout 3 you could skip half of the game and go directly to Rivet City? There is nothing like that in 4. While it might be impossible to make the first half of the story as open ended as New Vegas it with mods could probably be fixed in a few ways.
My idea for the mod is..

Some settlement have local quests that you need to fix for people to join. In all honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if you actual can get any settlement you want by clearing it out. You should be getting access to the work bench even if you have no quest.
All you'll miss are XP and approval.
Institute, being the most tech advanced faction, offers almost nothing to actual gameplay, not even a workshop. Why? Sink offered more neat features.

To get the minutemen ending you need to build the teleporter with them. Then at the battle for the hill, refuse to kill the Sythns. You will then argue with your father and be able to tell the Minutemen to rally to fight.
You can choose to attack the railroad/BoS if you want. But there is no need to, they never turn hostile on their own.
What facton do you think gives the best shit for you to play with by siding with them? Also best extra quests I suppose.
Every faction is hugely flawed and led by faggots, so I might as well just pick who offers the coolest stuff by sticking with them.
I'd almost just go full Minutemen since fuck everyone else, but I can keep them and have access to all their stuff either way.

I did the brotherhood path and you have the chance to tell them about your son. I joined after I found out the institute took him, so my character mentioned it first.
I don't know if that changes if you join before finding anything about him. I joined the Railroad before finding out it was the institute and they only imply it once, but after that, they speak of it as if it were certain. I dunno.
By the way, what was the purpose of the Institute? I did their storyline, read every terminal they had, and I still don't know what they wanted, other than a better source of energy, but they have no big scheme, no plan set in motion, they talk about phase three, but never say a thing about it, so I don't know what was the purpose of their storyline.
The Brotherhood was crystal clear, I'm in the middle of Railroad and it also seems pretty straightforward, but the Institute is just "you got the energy we needed for our plan we can't talk about, replace me as director and stay in the dark for no reason, and lead minds far more brilliant than yours into a better future"
