>>
>>317313897
We had a couple of fairly decent threads yesterday.

It turns out the key is not start off by going on about localization. Hell, the real key is to not start off by going on about Lin and the boobslider. Even mentioning just the name changes resulted in a better topic.

These are good suggestions. Thanks guys.

And not a shitposter in sight so far.
>>
so how does this game compare to Chronicles. I'd imagine that game would be pretty hard to top.
>>
Did any of the Japanese players mention framerate drops? I've been noticing more and more in a lot of Youtube videos of the game that there are a lot of moments where the fps really seems to take a hit. These are all videos by different people so I don't think it's a problem with any specific video.

I'm just wondering why no one has mentioned it at all. It's a huge game so I don't blame the devs or anything, but it looks like it might be a bit annoying. I haven't seen any previews talk about it either, which is weird because people are usually all over this kind of thing.
>>
>>317315096
I've heard multiple times from people who played the game that it doesn't have framedrops
>>
>>317315096
Noticed those in the xplain videos as well, it looked like 1-2 second stutters whenever they entered a really big area. I have no idea how they handled loading in this game, but it's clearly pushing the Wii U the same way the first Xenoblade mildly pushed the Wii.

It was The Last Story that really made the Wii chug.

People are bullshitting and saying that they cut story elements, but all evidence says otherwise.
>>
>>317318950
The only cut content as in CUT is the boob slider in the character creator.
There's altered content: some of Lin's lewd costume options have extra skin-tight latex to cover more skin, and some religious references ironed out (Beyond the Logos Artificial Destiny Emancipators (BLADE) -> Builders of the Legacy After the Destruction of Earth (BLADE), etc.) but that's pretty much it
>>
>>317319029
Don't bother, it doesn't matter what gets cut, it could literally be anything. But if anything lewd gets cut then censorship apologists will latch onto it immediately, because that is what makes you look like a loser for caring about and they can just repeat that. As if it was the only thing that got cut, and as if it makes you sick and twisted for caring about it in the first place, on an anime image board that they are also on.

Regardless of how little it means to you, a censorship is a censorship and should not be endorsed.

A big deal breaker for a lot of people is that they aren't just throwing up the japanese audio on the eshop. NIntendo is already just assuming you have an external HDD at this point, there is no reason they can't just put that up there aside from sheer arrogance and that if someone actually knows japanese (yet bought a PAL wii u) it fucks up there localization.

Data packs don't make the Wii U more powerful. It reduces loading times and makes textures pop-in a lot less. You'll still get most monsters (outside of the gigantic ones) and even encampments appearing out of nowhere 2 feet in front of you

The packs are mostly used to lower loading times and texture loads, but they do reduce a few pop-ins. Not all of them

People say this, and I think it makes what we actually know sound different than it is.

It's not like the game had this huge, religious theme to it that is getting changed. There were names that had various religious origins and intonations but were not actually specifically meant to be anything important in it of themselves. Testament, Beyond the Logos Artificial Destiny Emancipators, etc. None of these words are core things to the game or its story. Are the changes generally worse and seem to follow no real logical criteria? Yes. I would have, in many of these cases, preferred just a straight translation. But people shouldn't be going around acting like something different happened than what happens many localizations.

Just stated to watch the video Nintendo uploaded 6 hours ago, I am really impressed with the draw distance and how they designed the world, its exactly the type of game I want to play visually. Not a fan of the combat but its other features redeem it.

World building is a critical elements to the story and its structure.
It is something that the writer comes up with to add with the world they imagine the story takes place it.
Removing and altering this show how little they respect the writer and what his intention is, which is something any translator wouldn't do since this is against their work ethic of preserving as much as possible the author intention and will.

But this is vidya, anything gets a free pass in the name of 'localization'.

>Witcher 3

Nigga, have you lost your damn mind?

Witcher 3 was a great game, but the world itself was litterally nothing but filler and eye candy between quest destinations. It served no purpose and altered the game in no way other than giving you some pretty scenery as you wandered on your horse.

At least MGSV uses the openess of the world as part of its core gameplay loop by letting you accomplish any objective in any way you damn well please (even though they could have just been open ended locations and never really needed to be connected to a larger world).

And Fallout 4 may be a shitty game but it also uses its open world better than Witcher by putting a strong focus on exploration, discovery, and accomplishing things from any direction you choose.

Witcher is just following the linear trail with witcher senses and then killing the monster in the set spot its going to be in- but only after you followed the trail and triggered the right conversations first. The open world does not really add much and isn't very interactive or serve much of a purpose as it does in MGSV or Fallout 4.

That said, I would be inclined to argue that despite having a worse Open World, Witcher 3 is a better game, so do not misunderstand specifically what I am trying to say here.

>but the world itself was litterally nothing but filler and eye candy between quest destinations.

Thats what open world simply is for the most part, witcher 3 did it well because the scenery and bimoes were incredibly well designed and if you followed the story line, level integration with the open world was good. The witcher 3 also had a lot of side quests jotted in the world so everything was nicely done.

As for MGSV, the 360 degree entry point features is very overrated, as someone who has played 1~GZ, the only thing open world did for the game was reducat from the quality of the level design through the illusion of space. Metal gear is a game that thrives on seperate hub closed world level design and you only have to look back at it's preddesesors to realize the advantage this game kojima to nail level pacing, platforming, bimoes integration and overall good level design which was largely absent from the game. That's why I think MGSV is a shitty open world game.

As for fallout 4, what I said was kind of uncalled for, I haven't played the game and should not have commented on it.

Witcher 3 isn't the end all be all of 10/10 open world games but it was easily the best one this generation. Witcher 3 fails in many areas but this is not one of them.

>witcher 3

The open world added nothing. That game could have been nothing but corridors and rooms, and mechanically, nothing would have changed.

>MGSV
I disagree entirely. I feel that MGSV has the best quality of level design in the series. In addition to having far more options for infiltration. In a game where navigating an environment and moving around hazards and threats, setting traps, ect is the core gameplay, Open World adds a lot, because in a game of that type, the freedom of approach is what gives the game depth. Of course there are pitfalls the game can fall into (open world when implemented poorly can make it too easy to get around threats, or be too heard and leave only one correct path. Thankfully, MGSV avoids both of these flaws)

>Fallout 4

At least you admit your mistake here. Fallout 4 is a heavily flawed game, but the way it uses open world is really well done. Especially with the new crafting system adding such a huge incentive to interact with, gather, and scrap as much shit as possible.

>Witcher 3 best open world game of the generation.

I would say Witcher 3 is one of the best games of the generation so far hands down.

But its a poor 'open world game'.
Thankfully that doesnt hold it back at all, because it doesnt really try to be an open world game. Its just a normal, typical RPG, with an open world filler between the areas that actually matter to give some scenery and a sense of scale.

I think the people who talk about changes to this game, need to read what went down with Xenogears's localization.

Because holy hell was that a shitshow. For one, the ENTIRE game was translated by one guy (specifically Richard Honeywood who works at 8-4 now and he was the localization director of FFVII). And Square was understaffed at the time, so he had to do some of the coding too, and sleep in the office to save time.

Then came the issues with the translation. See the original name for the final boss in Japan was going to be Yahweh, but Richard said in a meeting to Takahashi "that's a little too on the nose, plus translators are actually leaving the team partially due to it", so Takahashi changed it to Yabeh, which is a combination of Yahweh (hebrew word for god) and yabai (japanese word for danger). When it came to the US again even that was seen as too much, so Yabeh was changed to Deus.

Then there's the various miscellanious stuff, like getting the number 17 in German spelled wrong. This game gave Honeywood so much shit that it basically changed the way Square dealt with localization as a practice, working internally with the devs because to do it on their own was, in his own words, "pure hell". Ted Woolsey is stated as saying that Secret of Mana nearly killed him.

>Open World adds a lot
There is literally nothing in the open world of MGSV. If you take away the open world, what do you have? A circle of shit level design, every single time. I can understand the appeal of having more options to infiltrate but it's really just some extra movement space, the options largely come from the additional gameplay features and improvements not the open world which really dose nothing for the game and looks like shit.

GZ had objectively superior level design, the very core and meat of the levels in MGSV is 90% trash. I can't believe you're actually glorifying MGSV, you must not have played the previous installments.

Technically, the same argument can be made for witcher 3 since it too has the advantage of 360 degree entry point to levels but its meaningless if the levels themselves are shit. There is so much more variety and bimoes in witcher 3 I really think you should reconsider what game you played.

>hat game could have been nothing but corridors and rooms, and mechanically, nothing would have changed.

The difference between witcher 3's open world and MGSV's open is there is actual content in witcher 3, it has side quests jotted around the world, monsters, a variety of materials to collect, houses, infastructure, buildings and loot to find inside of them and also variety in landscape and biomes in general. >TW: Yes, probably 40% or more of the screen text was nuked...there just wasn't space in the ROM. That means lots of story elements, nuance, personality, etc. also had to be stripped out. It was hard to do that, especially after I'd finished a translation, and then was told it was way over. At some point, due to time constraints, I just had to turn away from the screen text and focus on my English translation. I had to pare down from that. There is a lot I wish I could have done, but to be honest, I'm just glad those games are being rereleased, even with updated/edited screen text...they are great experiences, and a new generation of gamers can enjoy them. That is all good.

>SOM was, in some ways, the hardest. I was over there for over a month, and the screen text was still being modified quite a bit every day. The only creator in Japanese games that gets THAT assdevastated about his work is Kojima.

Fun fact, the reason MGS1 is filled with a lot more dialouge that sounds like shit by normal human beings in english is because the in-house translator for Konami basically rewrote sections of the script so that what was being said was natural english and not....Kojima-isms. The one that remained intact was the classic "can love bloom on the battlefield".

When Kojima found out, he was FURIOUS and got the guy fired for "interfering with his artistic vision". It's why the language is more stilted and awkward in MGS2 onwards.

>There is literally nothing in the open world of MGSV.

You mean the bases, the guards, the animals, you know, all of the gameplay?

This is what sets MGSV apart from a lot of other open world games, like Witcher or GTA. Sure, those other ones have an open world, but once it comes to actually doing something you are given a linear objective that has to be completed in a linear way with linear enemy spawns and all sorts of scripted non-sense.

MGSV does open world justice by making the gameplay and actual level design itself open world.

>GZ had objectively superior level design

I will humor you then. If it is objective, that means it should be easy for you to prove it, right? So go ahead and prove it big boy. What objective standards are we accepting as "good level design"? Is it "amount of secrets"? "number of ways to infiltrate base"? "complexity of guard patrols and searches?"

Come on, you seem to think this is easily objectively proven, so lets go that route then. Give me some hard numbers and objective standards, and then lets compare how MGSV stacks up to Ground Zeroes.

Spoiler Alert: Phantom Pain wins.

>same argument can be made for witcher 3.

No, because any meaningful content funnels you into a very specific location that can only be accessed a very specific way by following a very specific route. The name of the game in Witcher 3 is scripted events.

In MGSV, everything is dynamic and system based.

>Side quests jotted around the world
And MGSV has side ops jotted around the map.
But all of Witcher's side quests are scripted. MGSV's Side Ops, while having no story attached to it, are systems based and can be carried out however you choose.

>Monsters
MGSV has animals, guard patrols, deliveries, tank units, helicopters, ect

>Materials to collect
So does MGSV.

>Houses, infrastructure, buildings
Outposts, Bases, ruins, villages, camps, airports, oilfields, ect

>Loot to find inside of them
MGSV has that too!

That's pretty much what any good fantasy writer does.

Romance languages translate effortlessly amongst one another, just like asian languages do, as well (for example, Spanish to Portuguese is about as easy and straightforward as Japanese to Korean). English>Spanish is a tad more convoluted, as from time to time you'll be forced to rewrite sentences so they read more naturally, but it's still nothing in comparison to translating Japanese to English, which are really, really fucking different.

How would you know?

Yeah but it's nothing big. There's colloquialisms like how Spanish has "it cost an eye from my face", which is their equivalent of "it cost me an arm and a leg". But otherwise a lot of it translates smoothly enough that even Google can generally do it.

I at least wanted something close

It makes kinda sense for tying in with the religious undertones, but sounds godawful.

A potato cooking a potato, but that's cannibalism. Not again. There's enough of that in Xenogears.

>fucking 16 character to recruit to your party
Holy shit! I've been kinda media blackout-ing this game so far, that makes me pretty fucking hype.
>>
>>317326920
Yeah. Pretty much.

And I do think that if it was ye old olden days, Nintendo would have made Bayonetta get censored or not put it on its console. Or Binding of Isaac, for that matter.

I think the story- even the religious tones- will be in tact. I'm willing to eat my words if I'm wrong.

As A Rope of Robots put it

"in Japan, Soylent Green is probably a pretty obscure movie, but in the west the twist is what 99% of people who have never seen the movie know about it. The translators could have made it still a surprise by renaming the Soylent System.....anything other than the Soylent System"

>People like me are legitimately upset that NoA/8-4 took it upon themselves to remove shit because it makes them uncomfortable
>you'll shitpost about it and indirectly falseflag those people

Please just leave. You're wasting your time more so than people normally do on 4chan.
And to others out there: If what they changed/removed doesn't affect you, then just buy it and enjoy it. No stopping you. But if the censorship bothers you as much as me, then can I suggest just buying a used copy? No fucking way am I not going to play this game just for that, but I have the perfect choice so I can enjoy what's there without supporting shit localization.

To be more on topic:
I fucking started emulating Xenoblade ever since an anon in an older thread suggested it when asking about playing either the Wii or n3DS version, This shit is pretty and it's really nice playing with my headphones and 360 controller. I also started to play the 3ds version though. It's the comfiest thing to play in bed before I sleep, despite playing the same sections I've played on PC a second time. Maybe I'll do screenshots of both versions in the same locations just for kicks.

She says so in the game, besides what reason would a potato have for lying?

Yeah I'm getting it used. Feels like rewarding bad behavior on Nintendo's part if I get it new.
