All sources say that the encounter rate was lowered. EXP and gold yield were also increased to compensate.
That said, encounter rate is still kind of high, but you will never have to grind unless you run from half your battles.

stories are always atrocious, the more cliches the better. the genre is stagnant and mouthebreathers are desperate for it to remain that way with dragon warrior games being egregiously similar, plop dragon warrior 3 next to 9 or any other game in the series and it makes fewer meaningful iterations than COD

Why hasn't any game used the magic system Slayers used in the light novels? The Bucket Capacity and Pool Capacity, where Pool Capacity would be your total MP, but your Bucket Capacity would be the total amount of MP you could use at one time.
So, for instance, each spell would have an MP cost, but if your Bucket Capacity wasn't big enough, you couldn't cast the spell, but if your BC was more than the cost, you could put in additional MP to make the spell more powerful.
If you wanted to be exactly like Slayers, you could make your HP and MP the same thing.

I love Slayers. There needs to be more anime/manga like it. You know, epic adventures which could essentially be a D&D session, with a big over-arcing plot but everybody gets side-tracked. But nobody has come close. For example, One Piece, has the overall plot of finding some treasure (I think). They reached the "place" in like 10 or so bits, since then it's just been them exploring, getting into long fights and the occasional bit of fan service.
It's not the same as Slayers. I dunno, Slayers seemed to hit the sweet spot of progression, but character and world building.
Look at shit like Sword Art Online, amazing premise, as .hack was rather old when it came out, but they totally fucked it up by suddenly going "actually, fuck it, let's just end it here, make him come out, spend a huge amount of time doing an incest side-plot and then.. oopsie I'm bored let's go and do another game cause I want to do guns"
It could have been really good. Episodes of SAO were great until episode 12, when he gets out and that's it. 12 more episodes of incest. Had it been 12 episodes of fighting bosses and farming and shit, I'd have been GOAT. The bit where he goes and makes a new sword was brilliant, it needed shit like that.
As for video games, nothing seems to come close to Slayers either. Dragons Dogma maybe? I've not played it. Any games where you build a party, build 'bases', craft shit and so on, which isn't an MMO?
I know Suokdien is one, I think, but something modern? Samurai Warriors: Empire is like that, but that's not out till Feb 2016.

Dogma has that old school feel in spades and is perfect for making your own story. /v/ really likes it for a reason. It's primarily an open world action game though, the plot is kept t a minimum but honestly, if you like old fantasy stories you'll probably find it touching.

I was pirating anime before Pirating was even a word we used. My Ranma 1/2 tapes were like 6th generation, & you could barely watch them because 5 people before me all copies off one another until my tape was such a degraded copy I could barely read the subtitles.
