I think the developers have a point by saying leaking story beats and marketing material isn't necessarily appropriate unless there's a real consumer concern. Having a leaked scooped on a story spoiler is not newsworthy and is potentially damaging to the project.

Publishers have a right not to play ball with gamejournoz

Gamejournoz shouldn't be playing ball, and if that means not getting early copies then they should deal with it and buy it on their own.

Fuck Kotaku

Yes. Most games journalists are, as it turns out.

I suppose dropping out of college or graduating with a degree and winding up in video game journalism would drive most people to drink.

According to some devs, journalists are often the only people doing heavy drinking at events. And will openly smuggle drugs in, and while the devs refuse, the journos will go off and get shit faced because they think every expo needs to be a party.

If they think people will read it, they'll post tangentially related weeb shit. If people don't, they'll do less of it.

Most news outlets publish both serious shit and dumb fluff. I don't see why this is such a big deal.
>>
>>317227584

Are you really comparing a major news outlet publishing information about government surveillance of the public to... a fucking game tabloid leaking marketing materials? Really? Those things are at all equivalent.

I generally agree on getting drunk at any event is a given, but these people are doing a job. You shouldn't get drunk on the company's dime, work time is for work. Also, it's NEW GAMES. Why would you need shit to enjoy new games no other fags will experience until later? This is pissing me off. I imagine this is what cripples feel about couch potatoes.
>>
>>317225907
fucking this.
>>
>>317227896
On a smaller scale, yeah, they are comparable.

A site about media will inevitably publish the more serious stuff from their industry and light fluff. It's what literally every news outlet aiming for a reasonably large audience will inevitably do.

The only real exceptions are like overtly high brow science and arts publications which Kotaku obviously isn't trying to be.

>inb4 'its Japan so it must be games'
>>
>>317228079

No. No. I don't care about doing different stuff. The issue is Kotaku was blacklisted for leaking marketing shit for Fallout and AS. It wasn't about some moral high ground or to bring people the truth. It was about page clicks. There is an enormous difference between that and Snowden.

The devs argument might have been weak, but his point is they will post anything to get clicks, and it's ludicrous that they are playing the victim and claiming the are "journalists" with that kind of shit being the BULK of their content.

It's a goddamn tabloid. They post tabloid shit. They got burned. Now they whine like a broke bitch. That is all.

If you’re pissing people off with your journalism, then you’re doing your job. Ruffling feathers, even if you’re entertainment reporters, is par for the course. Don’t stop doing it just because a couple publishers are a wee bit on the childish side of things.
This is a fantastic article on the complex relationship that exists between the developers of art and the people whose job is to review that art. Well written, well stated, A++++ would Kotaku again.
>>
>>317228525
They're dying anyway. Youtubers have destroyed them in views, and with clickbait they're struggling to get by, let alone with the parent company Gawker going through welfare-tier poverty and layoffs lately. The devs hate them too, since they're gleeful about throwing out articles claiming misogyny or sexism or some shit if there's a pair of breasts in a game. They're losing their comfy little perch in the industry and now the manchildren don't know how to deal with it.
>>
>>317228725
Does that include pissing off you readership? Because I'm fucking tired of leaks.
>>
I don't know anything about what's going on, but wouldn't them blacklisting a developer imply no longer covering news relating to their work?

As a gaming news site that would go against their entire purpose of existing.

Maybe that's not what it means, but like I said I don't know so I shouldn't' be posting.

>>

You're assuming they're playing the victim as opposed to telling their readers something about how the industry works and saying their side of the story.

I didn't know much about sites getting blacklisted and now I do. The reason they wrote this is that it's informative and given that we're currently in a thread that's inspired a lot of conversation, it's evidently in the interest of people who follow this stuff.

Well there you go thats a very thin, tangential relation to cars. KFC in Japan doesn't even have that. There's a difference between toeing the line and smuggling a truckfull of illegal Mexicans over it.
>>
>>317228808
By blacklisting, they mean that they will no longer communicate with that website, are banned from press releases, etc. They can still report what they get their hands on, though.

You're putting yourself in a smaller and smaller box though.

Lots of hobbyist press covers other shit that they might think is of interest to their readers. Kotaku does occasional weeb shit and occasionally fandom shit. There isn't any code that says "if you are a site about this you have to report on only this." They've even implemented a button on their site which removes everything that isn't explicitly about gaming news and editorial for those not interested in it.

Also, why should they work to the standards of people who don't read their site and demand archives of everything they write anyway?

Thank you for finally fucking making an argument.

You're right that it's potentially a morally difficult area, but it massively varies from case to case.

In the example they gave about Doom 4 having a really troubled development and Kotaku reporting on this via leaks sent directly to them, it could be argued that it is in their readerships interest to know because of the nature of things like pre-orders.

For example, pre-orders of things like Thief, Duke Nukem Forever and Arkham City would be drastically affected by things like this and the people pre-ordering have a right to know.

True but is Kotaku reporting in good faith rumor or are they fabricating stories/running with rumors as fact? Bethesda you might have a case for your argument but Ubi? It was 100% running with leak screen shot and game title when Ubi was in the middle of a PR nightmare with Unity. Leaking screen shots and titles is no journalism.

When I say public interest, I mean their readership and the people who buy games in general.

And I get that it's over leaks. But at the same time, it is a perfectly valid look in to how fucking insane and how unwilling to learn from their mistakes Ubisoft are.

The blacklisting is what it is. Ubisoft can do what they want. But at the same time it's hard to have any sympathy for Ubisoft if there's evidence that they were carrying on with a business plan that had literally just fucked over millions of their customers.

Games journalists are bottom-feeders, mindlessly running around, trying to attract the attention (and clicks) of any passing by gamers. They overreact, misconstrue, and bend the truth to get people to go on their blogs and give them money through ad revenue. I don't believe any games journalist is passionate about their job.

Videos games are a more successful medium than film or music, but are much more shallow. Very rarely is a thought provoking or different-from-the-norm game popular and more successful than the AAA garbage shat out every year. So games journalists are forced to write about the new CoD, the new Star Wars game, or the new Assassin's Creed/Assassin's Creed clone to stay relevant in this pitiful market.

There's zero driving force for interesting writing when the games you have to write about aren't interesting in any way. It's a dull, bland, monotonous job, and I would never want to work as one.
>>
>>317231554
So they are doing leaks and not being a pawn of the developer, which we agree is good...

But it doesn't count because that gives them traffic?

It only counts if they're doing it for purely selfless reasons?

>>
>>317231576
Whoa whoa whoa, I'm not arguing for Ubi, they can fuck off and die for all I care. What I'm saying is video game journalism is fundamentally different then just about any other type of journalism. For a review to be meaningful at all it has to be out before or at the same time the game launches. For a movie it's easy, buy a midnight screen ticket, take 2 hours to watch it. Then bag out your review. But games? When games are 20hr a pop long? You need the cooperation of the publisher to get a review out in a timely manor. And in all honesty we all knew Ubi was gonna make another AssCreed, they only ran with it because they got that screen shot. If they cared at all about the working relationship with Ubi maybe they should of Emailed them and asked them about running with it slightly later when the PR machine was a little calmer.

>>317227243
This is pretty accurate.

There shouldn't be a tit for tat relationship between journalists and publishers at all. Not getting bribed with 'review' copies, no flying off to LA for demo events, nothing. Consumers benefit from both parties benefit from blacklisting eachother because now one becomes more honest and the other now has to rely on its product actually being a good product

When 100s of people work their asses off completing a product but a not-for-sale edition ends up in journalists hands for the purpose of review, they shouldn't just punish developers immediately even before the product actually reaches the market.

You are exchanging potentially millions of dollars and years of work for a few thousands that will go in a "journalists" pocket, after said games journalist spends maybe a few minutes to compose a click-bait.

Come on. I mean, this is an industry and it doesn't run on good will to feed developers, it runs on sales.
