Dunkey isn't some unknown in the eyes of Riot.
I think him quitting League had good points. Riot should have done more for him throughout his Youtube career, him being banned is one of them. But, if he didn't enjoy playing the game anymore and his friends didn't either, then he was right to stop.

The vast majority of "youtubers", that is, people that literally make enough money through YouTube advertising to live off if it, do not make that much money.
Most of them either also freelance, have a second dedicated job, or rely on their significant other for a steady portion of their living wages. Funky falls into the latter category, as does Jontron.
Very very few actually make "a lot of money", and those that do usually put out multiple videos a days with several MILLION views by the day's end.
Nobody knows the specific numbers, but Dunkey probably makes enough money that he could live off it in a low-tier appartment, but combined with his gf, they can afford their house (though apparently they're having problems with that as of late)
TL;DR youtubing is a modern gold rush phenomenon. It's not a profitable life's work for most but everybody thinks they can do it because "all I have to do is be funny and make videos". The boom has dried up and only the well established remain successful.
