Also, I don't like it, but I feel like Master Chief is bigger among the iconic FPS characters. Doomguy is more like Snake and Mega Man, unfamiliar to anyone but people with a higher than average contact with the gaming world.
Collectathon is not a genre, you silly. That would be like saying that "Fast" is Sonic games' genre. Banjo is not necesarily entitled to a position in Smash.

Actually, being popular in Japan appears to be of critical importance for Smash characters. Literally every character on Smash is japanese (with the small Diddy exception being designed by americans but in the end is owned by Nintendo), making Banjo, Shovel Knight and Shantae really hard to get into Smash.

So I believe that Banjo-Kazooie will be revealed in the upcoming December broadcast. Strongly.
For the following reasons:
- Banjo, despite being owned by Microsoft, is one of the well-known Nintendo characters not yet in Smash, and is the only major Nintendo IP that debuted on the Nintendo 64 worldwide.
- They placed highly on many polls about the ballot for Smash 4 and have always been a popular request
- These requests were so high they caught the attention of Xbox head PHIL SPENCER, who not only said he would like the idea, but cited that Nintendo and Microsoft have worked together before.
- This acknowledgement caused the requests to INCREASE FURTHER
- Cloud Strife. This character represents an iconic PlayStation game, so the fact that he was added is hugely beneficial to Banjo & Kazooie, because it shows Sakurai does not give a fuck about console wars when he wants to add a character.
- Minecraft for Wii U has been rated by PEGI, meaning this game is very likely going to be on Wii U. Again, another collaboration between the two companies as Microsoft owns Minecraft.
- Sakurai has considered then before. He thought about adding Banjo and Kazooie, but couldn't due to the acquisition of Rareware.
So he definitely knows they exist.
- JonTron, an immensely popular YouTuber, is a very vocal fan and supporter of Banjo & Kazooie, showing his ballot vote for them on Twitter. Why is this relevant to anything? Again, the reveal of Cloud Strife. Two YouTubers, The Completionist and TheJWittzs were given a special pass to Nintendo HQ to watch the Direct, mostly for their reactions to Cloud in Smash. This shows that at least NoA is very kind to YouTuber celebrities, and it might not affect their chances, I have a strong feeling Jon will be shown Banjo and Kazooie in Smash before anyone else in the same way in order to hype it up.
Master Chief would be the craziest addition ever. But I don't know if he's relevant enough in Japan.

They just added those third parties because they're so big that they naturally got a lot of attention and bring in sales.

Aside from using covenent weapons like the energy sword, I think it'd be neat if Chief's special gimmick would be having an shield bar like in the original Halo. When the bar is full Chief has higher overall endurance and defense, making him harder to KO, but if he keeps getting hit his shield bar will keep depleting until it eventually reaches critical and now Chief will take more damage and knockback. The bar would only recharge if Chief avoided getting hit for a handful of seconds.
