Are there honestly any good western games even on par RDR? Why is this genre so overlooked in video games?
I liked Call of Juarez 1 and 2. That newest one, Gunslinger or something was pretty fun too but way too tiny for me. They're barely on par with RDR but still a fun as fuck time. Don't touch the third game about cartels, that one was absolute shit.

the one thing irks me about RDR to this day is that it was set in Rockstar's fictional version of the US like GTA. That works for GTA but when you make a game about an actual historical period where geography and history are pretty goddamn important it just seems dumb. Did the Civil War even happen in RDR's world?

It's just not a very good setting for video games because the old time technology limits what designers can do. (Compared to sci fi or fantasy where designers can justify pretty much any mechanic they want.)

That meant including every setting possible in the western genre.
This includes Texas, Mexico, the Southwest, the Great Plains, and even the Rockies.
You cannot realistically make a GTA level game that stretches from Louisiana to California.
I feel like unless you go the COJ: Gunslinger route, normies would get bored. Spaghetti Westerns in particular are too slow for modern gamers.

The reason there are so few Western games is because they have no audience outside of America.
Japs won't make them, and they probably won't buy them either.
Eurotrash won't make them either, and certainly wouldn't buy them.
So the only market for them is in the US, and it's a niche at best even there. Take what you can get, but don't expect a glut of them.
