There's a mod on nexus that changes survival to ranger mode; ie both you and the enemies takes more damage while your health recovery is slower and more legendary enemies show up.
After 40 hours I had enough, once I reached a boss the mysterious stranger failed to kill because there's a fucking limit on bullet sponges when it isn't about skills but just exploiting the AI to kill them.

Already bored of the game. Same quests a million times. Same settlers complaining even though turrets and guard posts set up with guns provided to settlers. Same boring raiders. Same boring enemies that drop in 1-3 shots even on hard and above difficulty. It's not like the other fallouts. They striped the game of all of its RPG elements besides boring crafting and settlements. The game is just like any other shooter. Bethesda failed. It was fun for a while but it just becomes too dry.

University Credit Union is a building just outside sedgwick hall. Go in there and open all the safes, one of them has a button that opens the wall to the research lab. In there you'll find the "data" which is a prototype 10mm pistol. Special attribute is it never needs to reload. Pretty good

Fantastic. Melee/gunslinger/sneak build. I've put a great deal of perks into endurance. So when I take too much damage I just eat the mofos I've killed. Plus my damage resistance from toughness, moving target, and lone wanderer has allowed me to survive things I shouldn't. Just got the ghoulish perk so I'm exited to see how the glowing sea reacts. I pretty much creep around with either my sword or silenced 10mm and once things get too hairy I whip out my sword and sprint from enemy to enemy. Rekt.

I'm putting all my shit into Charisma and Agility, with a focus on pistols. I'm still pretty early in, but my main strategy seems to be unloading on the nearest enemy as fast as I can pull the trigger with either my 10mm or my 45mm pipe pistol, then moving on to the next guy. The problem is that if something's tough enough to still be standing by the time I have to reload, I'm usually fucked.

I'm doing you're general gunner character. I focused on hand guns, got a bit of stealth, but also a bit of rifling too.
It's working well enough, I suppose.
I'm just super disappointed with the lack of weapons. I have the .44 magnum which is the best pistol, and I'm one level away from being able to get the final receiver mod for it. Kinda sucks that this pistol I found 10 hours in is just the best pistol.
Sure there is probably a few unique (I already got Krugger's, but it's basically just the same as the regular one, it doesn't even have a unique model) ones, or maybe I can get lucky and find one with a cool enhancement from a random legendary enemy, but meh.
Same thing with the shotgun. I found a combat shotgun and have it mostly maxed out in crafting, and it's not gonna get any better.

Current build is mostly guns with 1 laser and plasma. I really should drop a couple weapons because I'm weighed down occasionally.

I 1 shot that courser in the main quest after taking a psycho.
I'd say it's doing well. I play on survival. I'm so overpowered I think it would just be boring if I switched to a lower difficulty now. I rarely die as it is.

I'm considering trying to go for a power-armor using, fist punching motherfucker (literally).
Get 10 strength for the CHAAARRGEE perk, and get enough agility to get the perk to reduce damage while you're sprinting, so you basically become an invincible steamroller while running.
Of course, once you get to someone you knock them down and punch the shit out of them.
Sound fun? My current character of just using guns is boring as fuck.

Workbenches aren't universal. They only count in the area that you put it in. That means that the duct tapes you put in Sanctuary don't show up at red rocket unless you have the perk that lets you set up supply lines

I died a lot from random grenade/molotov throws until I was able to easily and quickly kill basic enemies before they can throw them, afterwards I only really die from poisonous bugs and explosives
A couple of bloodbugs is more dangerous than a deathclaw.
I haven't done a melee weapons run, I might do it once I get bored of winning with ez mode stealth.

There are plenty of RPGs you can beat without leveling up, doesn't make'em bad.
For example, Morrowind is easily beatable at level 1, and so is oblivion and skyrim.
Final Fantasy 8 is easily beatable at level 1.
Basically any RPG with some sort of level scaling (either direct level scaling like Oblivion, or scaling that adds in new enemy types when you level up like Morrowind) can be beaten at level 1 or close to it.

I'm playing as a fat, lucky, and autistic rifleman in very hard mode. The perks in the luck tree go so well with rifles, to the point where low survivability is made up by your ability to do lots of damage. Upgrade path for me was .38 pipe rifle -> scoped hunting rifle -> scoped hunting rifle and combat rifle/shotty. 3 guns used for different amounts of distance, ez. Headshot in VATS with your saved critical hits to help deal with legendaries.
I specced 3/9/3/1/3/1/8 initially. Rough start, but with better armor and more skills I have a lot of fun with it. Once I spent a few skill points to level up charisma and use the lone wanderer perk, the game really opened up for me. Again, I ask you to git gud and also git gud

Started by focusing on rifles and automatic weapons while getting new ranks of gun nut, science!, armorer and lockpicking as soon as they are available. In my mid 30's now and I've picked up heavy guns and explosives, medicine and a point in aquaboy because otherwise navigating water is a giant pain in the ass.

Gettin' ready to buy another and replace my irradiated pistol with it. that or I'm going to wait and find something more badass, I was a Charisma/Strength/Intelligence/Endurance build, and once I hit 39 I'm moving over to stealth, I've already got some sweet silenced weapons too. I don't like my low charisma, high intelligence, mediocre everything else build any more. I like mixing up my weapon types so that I never eat too much of one type of ammo. Plasma cartridges are pretty uncommon for me at 36, so I'm not trying to use the stuff too much.
I highly recommend turning a pistol into a scatter gun to complement that sniper, though. Scatter gun wrecks.

Lvl 41. 4/6/2/6/7/6/6 Been doing a sort of jack of all trades run on normal to get access to all the crafting and building shit and to see if this game's worth another playthrough. Only area left to clear is the southwest part of the map and I'm missing the Charisma bobblehead, which I don't know where to get. Game's pretty shit. Settlement building is awful and feels completely tacked on, weapon mods aren't very deep and get real boring at rank 4 crafting perks because all of them are basically just upgrades. In combat a combo of Jet and a Two Shot gun can kill anything easily including mirelurk queens. And at this point the game is handing me fusion cores like they're candy. I have 60 of them, which spawn in ammo canisters now, so there's no reason to not use my Mk 6 X-01 armor all the time. Not even legendary alpha deathclaws can make a dent even with my 2 END.

You'll need to be more specific, what is your current SPECIAL, what are your current perks? If you don't invest in str/agi right from the start, switching over to a melee character is going to be difficult because some important melee perks are behind those. Doing a guns character is better if you've fucked up your build early because most of their damage upgrades can be unlocked with low SPECIAL, and with high int, you have access to the mods that every ranged weapon needs.

Playing a stealth melee character on legendary.
Have a swatter that has 2x damage on targets with full hp, modified with blades for a total of 90 damage, 10x bonus damage on stealth melee hits from ninja, and blitz increasing damage over distance. So ~1800 damage unbuffed on initial stealth hit. I one shotted a legendary sentry bot with psychobuff on. Pretty much everything is a one shot kill if I can get close enough to blitz stealth attack.
Also blitz is stupidly powerful with this set up, removes any challenge from having to get in close to enemies. However I guess this is a necessary evil considering how shit stealth is in this game and how quickly AI detects you when you're creeping up behind them any faster than a snails pace.
