Rifley touches the ground in every single Metorid game he's in, and in the Prime games and Other M he spends at least half the battle on the ground where he's more dangerous than he is in the air. And then Sakurai makes Ridley as a stage hazard walk around and slash at people on the ground anyway.

He has range with his tail and arms, but only one hit and a little lag on either star-up or end for some of his moves balances that. Problem solved.
There, that took me a total of five minutes. I doubt Sakurai has even tried to address the issue.

Ridley always was folded in like this. In Super Metroid, he is hunched over while flying. In Zero Mission, he is also hunched over while flying and sitting. In Fusion, still hunched over, but even worse. In Prime, he could just lower his hands a bit and he would be standing on all fours. He is hunched over while slowly walking towards Samus in Metroid Prime 3. He is hunched over while flying and standing on two in Other M as well.
TLDR: Ridley always had that vulture kind of hunched over stance.
