Why would you feel bad for playing a good character? A part of Smash is that some characters are so shitty that they can be beaten without any skill or effort. But higher level characters have good responses to each other and that's where the game becomes interesting. If you feel bad about landing easy combos you shouldn't be playing Smash in the first place. Maybe you could feel less legitimate if your opponent just walked right into the start of your combo every time, but if you outplay them to get it started I see no reason to feel bad.

Video games are not always as well thought out in terms of competition as sports or other types of games / competitions. Ness' standard combo starts with PK fire, which just goes straight across the ground and is easy to hit with, as your opponent will typically be standing on the ground. It's so easy to hit with it, and then you get to follow it up with the d-throw -> f-air -> f-air. Just because it's in the game does not mean that it's fair or balanced, just look at Rosalina & Luma. Also I play LAN with my friends and they are all bad so I don't wanna make it awkward and just completely kick their ass every single time. I'd prefer to at least give them a chance by playing as a shittier character.

Pk fire is one of the worse projectiles in the game mate.
Besides the fact that every character can easily di out of the bolt it's also got a full second of reaction time to deal with if the move is used on the ground.
In short only new Ness players and salty faggots who are just fighting as Ness after I beat their ass use it. Any Ness beyond beginning stages should learn Pk fire should only be used in safe situations such as trying to pick a ledge grab or snipe a roll during their down time.

I know that but it does so much pushback and he can do another one almost right away so trying to punish out of shield if you are a little bit to far and you'll get an f-smash to the face, especially because of the shield nerf

Lucas is really fun, but I have tough time figuring out what to do in neutral. Nair is nice but has no range and doesn't autocancel. All his other moves have too much startup to be really useful at a medium-close distance, unlike Ness'...... well, everything...

short hop PK fire (or grounded/full hop PK fires depending on what your opponent is doing and how you're reading and conditioning him...), short hop/full hop descending zair, full hop ascending fair, nair approaches, a hard read grab, in some rare situations/matchups full hop dair is usable as well (RIP Brawl tho)
remember to get out of shitty situations fast with his jab combo. It can save your ass plenty of times. Lucas has a tricky neutral and his combos and other gimmicks require precision compared to Ness' broad strokes, but that's what makes playing him fun to me.

I'm getting much better at the nair strings. Trying to muscle memory FFNair > utilt > etc. Lucas' jumps/air mobility is so odd, but I'm figuring it out.
I never used a character with a tether (other than Lucas in Brawl, but the Rope Snake didn't have a hitbox in Brawl) before so I'm still getting used to Zairing. That seems like exactly the kind of move I'm looking for, though.
Also yeah I need to jab much much more, Lucas' jab is amazing.
I like B-sticking a lot for retreated PK Fire, (also makes it easier to PSI magnet for me) but I've stopped bothering with it since it's really just a hassle to set up two sets of controls at tourneys if I'm going to go between Ness and Lucas. Plus I like being able to use it to bair while moving forward.

I never bothered with B-sticking much in the first place since it's just a pain learning two different control setups. Smash 4 has kinda discouraged me from reaching for the C-stick anyway since it doesn't seem as responsive as in Melee/Brawl. I already switched over to Attack instead of Smash on the stick so that using it wouldn't screw over air momentum, but the problem now is that it appears to just eat inputs every now and then and cause me to get hit, so most of the time I just use the A button if I can.
