If Monster Hunter has the best and most interesting PvE combat, how come there still is no big action adventure or RPG with overworlds and a story that has it? Instead we get a Monster Hunter story RPG that has fucking turn-based combat.
>>316577831
It's called Dragons Dogma, exclusive to PC in 2016.
>>316577883
>>316577918
I played that and while it is inspired by Monster Hunter, has the Monster Hunter Great Sword charge attack or Bow Arc Shots, it still plays like casual shit. Hitboxes/collision detection are a joke.
>>316577831
Monster Hunter is designed for the autistic fanbase that just likes to repeat the samey quests over and over.
We can't have an actually good game because Capcom.
>>316578694
Why is it considered normal racing the same race in racing games all the time, playing the same level in platformers until you have perfected it, fighting the same bosses in DMC and Bayonetta to S rank them or playing against 12 year old retards on the internet on the same map for 5000 hours but it's somehow weird or autistic when you fight the same monster in Monster Hunter which is challenging and fun and worth getting perfect at?
>>316578835
All of that is considered pretty autistic. There's an exception if it's something that doesn't consume a lot of time, for example you could have three to five games in ten minutes with certain racing games.
Normally people don't play games for more than 50 hours, tops.
>>316578835
all those things are also autistic.
>>316578960
>All of that is considered pretty autistic.
Well, then you're wrong here. Back to NeoGAF.
>>316578960
Normally people don't play games.
Playing video games is an autistic hobby, after all.
>>316577831

>>316578985

>>316578998
>wrong
Go ask random passerbys if it's normal to spend 500 hours in a game because it has big, slow swords in it if you don't believe me.
I didn't invent how people think.
>>316578835
The difference is that racing games don't force you to repeat the same challenge over and over is you got it right the first time, and Bayonetta and DMC are the same. In MH you are forced to repeat the same task hundreds of time for too many hours until you can advance in the game.
>>316579089
And if you share their views, you're wrong here. That's all I'm saying. Go clubbing or already queue for the next iPhone or FIFA if youw ant to be like them.
>>316579101
I don't understand at all the idea of pairing the forced grind with already slow gameplay.
The gameplay in the series looks all right but I can never get in because it so damn slow paced for no real reason. I really don't understand why design it like that because it undermines the challenge of gameplay, too.
>>316579195
You're the one who asked what's normal.
>>316578730

>>316579209
the game is slow when your bad at it. One you get a feel for the game play and know how to defeat most wyverns, the game goes by much faster. Took me almost a week to clear low rank caravan when i played MHFU, but only 2 days when i played MH4U.
I always hear about how grindy and time consuming these games are, but how many hours are we talking?
I've put in a few thousand hours into the Souls series which is fairly similar from what I've heard, how does MH compare to those games?
>>316579209
Only the starts/first five hours can be somewhat corny. But they're also comfy as fuck and the "story" interesting enough. After 5-10 hours you get to fight basically everything in the game and can fight whatever you want to fight or build whatever you want to build.
And 10 hours are nothing compared to the 3000 hours you can easily sink into a Monster Hunter.
Don't really understand this "grinding" meme.
But yeah, this thread is about putting Monster Hunter's combat into an open world or action adventure game without what you probably dislike about Monster Hunter.
>>316579209
Japanese love that playstyle. They feel like they have to WORK (instead of play) to sense any kind of achievement, so they put grinding in any game they make. It's a cultural thing. The same happens with korean and chinese gamers.
>>316579402
I should say it looks somewhat similar mechanically, atleast if you were using Ultra sized weapons in Souls.
>>316579402
500+ to see most of the stuff. Can be shorter if your good.
>>316579402
You just play them until you're bored. You'll never have everything in the game.
It's all about fighting dynamic, awesome looking monsters. If you don't enjoy doing this over and over again, don't buy it.
Well, Monster Hunter also has by very, very far the best and most engaging crafting system there ever was in a game, not even comparable with other games.
>>316579435
>And 10 hours are nothing compared to the 3000 hours you can easily sink into a Monster Hunter.
That's not a good thing. You should be able to have those games in a much lower time frame. The amount of padding for those extended playhours just means more neck and hand cramps.
>>316579512
After 500 hours you're still an absolute pleb who could probably never even kill an average G Rank monster solo, though. This is a good motivation to keep playing.
I'm at like 6000 hours and still get constantly hit fighting most monsters.

>>316579512
After 500 hours you're still an absolute pleb who could probably never even kill an average G Rank monster solo, though. This is a good motivation to keep playing. Also, even more important, you want to master most weapon classes. I know many people that play the games for 1000 hours but barely mastered more than three weapon classes. Every weapon plays almost like a different game.
I'm at like 6000 hours and still get constantly hit fighting most monsters.
>>316579435
>5-10 hours you get to fight basically everything in the game.
There are new monsters being introduced even on G-Rank. and to reach G-rank I'd say you'd need something like 200 hours if you take your time experimenting with new weapons.
>no one on /v/ can beat this guy solo
>>316579595
It's a good thing, makes Monster Hunter as fucking fair as it is. Almost no cheap trial and error at all. For exmaple, befoe getting to fight a Deviljho, you get to fight a different brute wyvern (Barroth) which is very similar in many ways but a lot weaker and slower, perfectly prepares you.
>>316579598
>After 500 hours you're still an absolute pleb who could probably never even kill an average G Rank monster solo
If you suck.
>>316579402
Monster Hunter is entirely boss fights that can be anywhere from 10-30 minutes on average solo.
It has a lot of replayability. There can be grinding for armor and weapon upgrades but its genuinely enjoyable.
I think I had like 800+ hours in FU and I put probably 60 or 70 in Tri and Portable 3rd and then 350 in 3Ultimate.
So yeah, theres lots of content there.
>>316579435
>But yeah, this thread is about putting Monster Hunter's combat into an open world or action adventure game without what you probably dislike about Monster Hunter.
I really wish Capcom had enough business sense to do this.
It'd also generate tons of interest in the mainline games. If they had stuff like levels with variety more people would get used to the combat. Right now the game series just isn't pulling in new players, it's just old fans looking forwards to next sequel.

>best combat
Even if that's true that's not a good thing. Game is specifically designed to be slow as fuck, and your attacks hardly ever have any affect on the opponent. Also interesting shit like footsies doesn't exist partly because everything has a shitton of poise, and partly because your movement potential is shit tier in comparison to pretty much any monster. I'll admit that the games are fucking fun when you actually get to fighting monsters, but I can't play them because I can't stand all of the boring shit you have to do in between fighting monsters just to have items to use in future hunts and to acquire ores for better weapons.

>>316579649
This. I have about 600 hours per game.
>>316580487
>and your attacks hardly ever have any affect on the opponent
Not if you're fighting them properly. If the monster's weak point is the head and all you do is hit its legs, then you won't have much effect and the fight will take 30 minutes. But if all you hit is the head then you'll constantly affect them with stuns, staggers and interrupts and will finish the fight in 3 minutes. Literally. I'm not even kidding. This is the average Greatsword speedrun in a nutshell.
>Also interesting shit like footsies doesn't exist partly because everything has a shitton of poise, and partly because your movement potential is shit tier in comparison to pretty much any monster
If by footsies you mean pixel-perfect spacing and punishing whiffed attacks from monsters, then that is definitely possible in Monster Hunter, and is something you should do if you want your hunts to be over quickly.

I'm thinking of maining the Sword and Shield and will use the Bushido Style.

It is possible. And ideal. And it's actually EASIER to do than abusing i-frames, since the default character without any Evasion +1/2/3 armor skills has very few i-frames in their dodge rolls. You space yourself just outside of the reach of the enemy's attack, and you punish.
The kind of i-frame dodges you see in shit like >>316580235 or >>316578289 is NOT easy to do.
It is much easier and less risky to figure out your opponent's patterns and position yourself right outside of their reach to punish their attacks or openings.

When has this ever been the case?
Amazing third-person action games with deep combat systems have been around since 2001 (and probably even before that, but my memory can't remember any specific examples before 2001). That was the year that Devil May Cry (PS2) and Severance: Blade of Darkness (PC) came out.
Since that time, there have been plenty of games where you have to learn your movesets, learn the enemy movesets and overcome the challenges that the environment provides by strategic and tactical action gameplay.
Monster Hunter 1 came out in 2004. Ninja Gaiden came out the same year. God Hand arrived in 2006. And tons of other games with deep, tactical and amazing third-person action combat have predated Dark Souls.
Demon's/Dark Souls didn't invent the idea of action games that punish button mashing and mindless gameplay. That's what you seem to be suggesting. That's just historically illiterate.

Yet somehow I feel that you're someone that praises Dark Souls for having "INNOVATIVE GAMEPLAY!" even though there really is no risk to playing it.
>B...B...But mah souls!
It's an item you can continually grind over and over. Try getting some of those rare drops in MH for a weapon/armor set you desperately need from a monster that routinely kicks your ass over and over again.
Will they ever feature dynamic skinning and butchering mechanics for all the monsters in any of MH's trillions of sequels? I want to see how to process one of these fuckers, and I want each and every part of their body to have a use, much like the Native Americans used every part of the great buffalo.

Different strokes for different folk then.
Never had the Shakas do anything useful for me other than be bait with the invulnerability masks.
Meanwhile my cats have dozens of tail cuts, saving staggers, and other crazy hits under their belt.I'm also incredibly biased after naked G King Shakalaka hunting in 2nd gen.
I guess it's more or less because I don't see the Shakas as naturally weak, so them going around hunting isn't a big thing.
The Felynes are just cats that walk on two legs. And there they go risking their lives to assist you, which makes it endearing.
>>316588513
AFTER the kill, dude. You've got a big ass carcass in front of you. I want to see EXACTLY how it's turned into usable shit.
Enough of the canned animation of taking out your dagger and stabbing your kill in a random spot a couple times to get a scale or some stupid shit. I understand that this would change the game's economic structure, but I think it would be for the better.
>>316588350

It's been the complete opposite for me. Meanwhile the cats constantly dick around, running in circles and giving healing horns when I don't need them or right after I faint. Different experiences, I suppose.
>>316588761
I'm not holding my breath, maybe if they announce MHXU we'll get it.
But after seeing how Monhun did in the west this time, they'll change their mind. Didn't 4U do really well here?
>>316588279
Probably because it actually requires effort. You do realize just how many different weapons you can use and different monsters you can fight in MH right? Also how interesting those enemies actually are in comparison to something like Gods Eater Burst where the only enemy that's really all that pleasant to fight is Hannibal. It has more large monsters than most games have bosses+midbosses, pretty much all of them are liked by the majority of players, only bitching I've seen is about FU plessy, giggy, and a few others. You're damn lucky to even get 5 weapons in the average action game, rarely even 3, and in most action games every weapon basically works exactly the same with slightly different attack speeds and damage values so you basically only have one weapon anyway. Why would the average dev even try to make something with combat as interesting as MH when they can make some shitty cinematic shooter like Biocock Infinite and get fucking paid?
>>316589195
MH4 was mostly skipped because the game was an utter fucking mess. Crafted weapons were utterly worthless compared to relics, the relic grind was even worse, charm melding was glitchy, weapon balance was the worst the series had ever seen, and the endgame is entirely comprised of Teostra GQs.
>>316589262
Too bad that with MH's terrible balance you typically wind up with only 3-4 usable weapons per game, and those weapons usually only have 1-3 moves you actually ever use.
>>316586003
I love MH to death, but is grindy as fuck nigga.
Performance varies a lot between weapons, most of time you'll have to get yourself multiple weapons, either for weapon progression (even GS has to get multiple weapons since you can't get Cera, Chedah or Fatalis from the get go), elemental weaknesses or shit.
Armor is also a big part of it, and you will often have to go through multiple armors in the game until you reach your desired one.
Charms are also a bitch.
These are all big factoids that affect your hunting time, the biggest grinding point
>>316589721
That's not what I fucking posted.
>>316589368
>only 3-4 usable weapons
Most weapons have been perfectly fine since P3rd, I don't know what you're talking about.
>1-3 moves
Most weapons don't actually have more than 3 attacks. Why are you complaining about most of the attacks in the game being useful? What does it even matter? There are essentially only 2 types of attacks possible with a melee weapon in the first place.

>Never had the Shakas do anything useful for me other than be bait with the invulnerability masks.

I mean, that's the whole point of the shakalakas, and when you do that you can deal massive damage to a monster (specially good for breaking parts/cutting tails), get a free pitfall trap, and so on, depending on the masks you pick

MY TIME HAS COME AGAIN!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=quc7thDYJCI
I love Kecha!
I want you to help me solve this mystery:
Say you want to download a DLC in MH4.
You launch the menu, and it asks you if you want to connect to the internet. A bit weird, but whatever.
Then it checks all of the DLC stuff you have on your SD card, section by section, and you have to confirm all of them. Can't see the point, but you just mash through it, right?
Then you go to download a mission. You can't download all you're missing at once despite the fact that it's all free anyway, you have to go into each section, select one piece at a time and then you pick "download", but that's not even weird.
THEN, AFTER you have downloaded, it asks you if you want to... memorize the data you have downloaded... and it defaults to "no".
Why, just WHY would they do this? I mean... the download is the part that costs them money, right? If you download their files and then delete them right away you basically used their servers for nothing... so why would it be the DEFAULT OPTION? Why would they even ASK IT RIGHT AWAY?
I mean ok, I know that it's like a few megabytes if that, but it's still so completely absurd!
>>316588761
Shiggy is back too, it was confirmed today
could someone tell me if the two Cats in MH4 are actually useful? I asked a guy who makes a lot of YT videos but he didn't answer me.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dabpTJooXk
Looks like they changed the way weapons and armors are upgraded.
Now instead of requiring a set quantity of specific materials you need to fill a "level bar" using a certain KIND of material. So if a weapon requires, say, a monster part, you can use a bunch of common materials (like a scale) or a few rare ones (like a mantle).

no, you always had the option to use a worse weapon that didnt require a harder monster or rare materials, but people just go and farm for the best stuff right away.
i liked Tri system, where you were kind of forced to wait and not skip half the content right away, so since you already had to grind for HR you could aswell farm to upgrade your weapons or do different armors, it needed more monsters and different quest but yeah, i dig the online system.
most people dont understand the game concept, they just start online with full groups, skip content and get the best gear the fastest they can, and the shitters pretend they are good at the game.

>>316594994
>on your first go
No, not really. Even pre-existing knowledge of the moves can't help you too much if you haven't trained the timing into your body through experience.
>>316579101
Incorrect. You only repeat things in order to grind materials for new equipment, and there are many sets that require relatively few hunts of the same monster to build a full set that will carry you through most of the game with enough skill, and weapons like hammer / greatsword are designed with the idea that you won't have to make too many of different ones in mind.
Repeating the same monster once or twice at different levels of difficulty, or as a subspecies, doesn't count, as they typically gain something that makes the challenge notably different.
At no point in the game does Monster Hunter ever, ever force you to do the same thing 'hundreds of times'. Even a dozen would be highly suspect for many things. It is you, the player, who chooses the option to repeat things for further rewards.
>>316581372
>>316594485
As an SA-user, that was a poor move on his part. The weapon has long enough wait windows between moves that on a hunt like Shaggy Maggy, not immediately flowing into a relatively lengthy move is the smart way to play once the mines come into the picture.
I have rarely, if ever, gotten hit by those things, because I don't commit to such moves the moment I can. The mine was building before he went into the doublecut. He wasn't observant.
>>316593396
I kind of like it, but you're jumping the shark way too soon if you think that will remove the grind altogether.
Upgrading your high end weapons will probably ask you to farm a LOT of useless parts.
>everyone gets numorous moves that trip everyone within 100000000 feet of the monster

Anything with an under 5% drop rate typically has multiple methods of acquiring them that, when calculated together, can raise the chance per quest to much more favourable odds.
Take the Rathalos Plate in Low Rank for example.
3% from a tail carve.
2% from any shiny drop.
2% for capture (two rewards)
4% for breaking head.
1% for breaking back.
If you carve the tail, grab at least one shiny, capture, break head and back (mount twice), then you have somewhere between a 12-13% chance for a plate per quest. More if you get two shinies.
[Caravan 5] Uncorner the Market has a 1% chance for any individual slot in the first line to yield a plate.
[Caravan 5] King of the Skies has a 1% chance for any individual slot in both the first and second line to yield a plate.
[Low Rank Event] USJ: High-Fire Act has 3% on both lines, plus 1% per slot for the subquest. It also has two Rathalos, so twice the break chances and twice the shiny and tail chances.
I've been looking for a plate for my Ace armour in G-Rank, and it took me two... three tries of the USJ event quest to get it. And that's just because I'd used other plates I'd gotten from just casually hunting monsters I happened across them earlier in the game of my own volition just to increase my variety of weapon options.
Things might look like they have shit chances, but in reality, most rares aren't actually as rare as they look if you know how to work the hunt and the numbers.
>>316596416
They're not.
I'm sorry anon, but you have to accept it that MH is not itself at this point anymore.
>>316597910
please dont defend the fucking RNG FFS I hate when people do this. If you want to have a rare part in a game like this then make it difficult to acquire skill wise, dont make it RNG there is no excuse absolutely none. Either you should get it after a half dozen hunts reasonbly if its RNG, or it should be skill based to acquire, but sub 10% drop rates on anything are stupid, especially in a singleplayer game. This just artificially lengthens the amount of time needed to acquire content for NO reason.
>>316598308
Give me one reason they are legitimately bad outside of being flashy and being "super moves".
They take time to build up. You have to be aggressive to use them regularly, or devote yourself to a style that gimps your weapon's moveset and mechanics to use them more often. Two of the styles can only use one, and things like the CB's Energy Blade take FUCKING FOREVER to build up. You'll be lucky if you get to use it every four or five minutes unless you're on Striker which, as I seem to recall, limits you to Yellow Shield, which is weaker than Red Shield.
MHX is very, very obviously an experimental entry in the series that is trying a lot of different things. I'm very neutral about how things go from here on out but I don't think it's lost its identity yet.

It's fine too, the anime slash added in Tri was a bit silly but the added mobility via fade slash was great, still moved over to SA either way.
>>316597910
Just wanted to let you know that 5 separate chances that add up to 12% is not the same as one 12% chance
>>316598458
I'm not defending RNG as a mechanic, but rather suggesting that even seemingly sub-10% drop rate items aren't actually sub-10% drop rate things when you factor in knowledge and skill. You have no idea how many people ignore a tail and just follow the monster, or never, ever grab shinies, or won't go on the quest that will yield better rewards, or break certain parts, and then complain about how much of a pain in the ass it is to get certain items, when said items are actually made much more likely to appear within that six-quest window you gave when you factor in skill and knowledge.
>especially in a single player game
A huge portion of the game's content is in a multiplayer area, balanced for 2 players. A whole fucking rank is locked to multiplayer, out of a few single player quests that can only be unlocked by going through the multiplayer.
I've played through most of the game singleplayer regardless of this fact, and even when I went online to grind something out, it never took me more than 10 quests (which were over in the blink of an eye with four players) to acquire one rare item I didn't even NEED.
Yes, it would be nice if there were other factors, like punch-carding quests to yield specific rare rewards after a certain number of hunts, but 95% of the time, the RNG isn't nearly as bad as you are making it out to be.
>>316599350
What about the Wyvern Fire?
The Wyvern ammo for Bowgurns?
The whole mechanics behind CB and SA?
LS sword dance and finisher?
Also Greatsword used to not have charge attacks in MH and it was considered "flashy" when it was add later on.

Too flashy and anime, and wasn't the original purpose of the weapon.
You're literally saying the hammer hunter art where you spin is "a departure from what MH was" despite just being the current spin x 2 times, leaving you twice as much as open and vulnerable.
>>316597320
I never said it would remove the grinding, and "jumping the shark" makes no sense in that context, unless you meant it ironically or something.
>>316599418
im talking about in G-Rank man, of course the low rank stuff is easy to get, but High rank, and G-Rank it literally is a single 1% chance to drop and that is inexcusable even in multiplayer game, especially one that is not massively multiplayer, at least in an MMO I can see why you might not want everyone to have a legendary sword of the gods or whatever, but in MH it does not make any sense and just artificially lengthens gameplay. I basically stopped playing MH3U because the grind for G-Rank parts was retarded im not doing that not worth the ridiculous effort.
>>316599606
>Too flashy and anime
Nah.
>and wasn't the original purpose of the weapon.
Which was what, exactly? Sucking?
>>316587968
Yeah, if you can't evade, retard
>>316598985
That's incredibly shallow, surface-level reasoning. What MH has always been to me, was about dancing with monsters, punishing their openings, and being punished for not counting my openings. Prediction, preparation, positioning, reaction, reading... all of these are still there. THAT is what made it so rewarding, so enjoyable.
Monster Hunter has gotten more flair over time. Whatever. It's a natural progression for a long-running series to become more exaggerated, outlandish, and flashy as time goes on, lest it become stale.
I would care more if these arts drastically changed how the game is played and, ultimately, they don't. Not that much. You still have to wait for huge openings to use a lot of them. You still miss out on damage and stretch out your hunt times by relying on more defensive or evasive arts.
What I notice that the arts do, is turn up the weapon's main function to 11, or otherwise make up for its deficiencies, and in both cases, you need to earn that right to make up for its deficiencies or make it really earn its name, by actually being good at the game. Or being excessively bad, in which case you get pity points but it still doesn't help you much if you can't land it.
>>316587968
>>316588283
I was implying you don't need to grind to get good armor if you're good at the game, you'll be fine using, for example, Tetsucabra armor in LR, HR and GR and it's not a difficult set to craft
>>316599549
Fits the gunlance.
It's always been worthless.
I already said I wasn't a fan of them, overcomplicated weapon designs.
Yeah it's too cartoony,
And the charge attacks are nothing compared to the new finishers.
I don't see your point? Because the game added slightly flashy features before people aren't allowed to not be happy with new, flashier features?
>>316600419
What are your standards for a weapon that isn't "overcomplicated"?
>>316599868
I'm in g-rank. And still it only took me two or three quests to get a Seregios Lens, by picking the right quest for the job and being mindful of breaks and drops.
Do you have a particular part you have in mind?
If it's an elder dragon drop, that is admittedly harder to justify.
>>316600489
Simple concept, with 4-5 different attacks that all have a distinct purpose.
What does /v/ think about the Charge Blade? I think I'm pretty bad at it, what I do is spam the XXX combo in sword mode until I turn red then I switch to axe mode and flail around in the vague direction of the monster. The monster dies quite quickly but I still feel very clumsy.
>>316600554
So anything that isn't braindead simple is overcomplicated. Gotcha.
Is MH4's online community still pretty active?
>>316600568
Holding A in sword mode until the hilt flashes and then letting go to do a double swipe, followed by a roundslash is better. When you charge your energy into the shield, the X+A attack of axe mode can be canceled out of early in by pressing R, which causes the energy to bounce around the shield, buffing the axe mode attack damage and giving certain attacks in sword mode explosive properties for a while, like thrusting with the shield with X+A after an attack, or drawing the sword out of the shield to attack with X after a load. Blocking is buffed, too.

Is it? I had hoped that MH wasn't even that old to jump the shark already
>lest it become stale.
I doubt that's true.
In any case on top of the gameplay I always enjoyed the overall quality of monster and equipment design which mostly avoided trashy Japanese tropes and when it didn't they just kept those equipment types as bonuses and on the side.
But now the charm is more or less gone. For me at least.
Mhx looks really good so far im worried about the frames on toaster 3ds

>Well, Monster Hunter also has by very, very far the best and most engaging crafting system there ever was in a game, not even comparable with other games.

Admittedly it feels satisfying, if only because of the work put into gathering the materials.

Toukiden: Kiwami gets rid of most of the stuff I don't like about MH (although the combat is sadly simplified)
and Toukiden 2 is going to be open world. Fucking perfect.

nah m8, they let a lot of Engrish people get into the CBTs, the problem with the game is that it's owned by Tencent, and you have a daily quest limit and have to pay money to unlock different weapon types and moves
You have 5 seconds to explain why you play a female hunter.
Butt staring is not a valid excuse.
>>316602146
I like playing dressup :^)
>>316601747
Again, your reasoning defaults to the visual. It looked simple, both in attack and in equipment. It sounds to me that there is where your charm in the series came from. That wasn't the case for me. It came from how the game was handled mechanically which was pretty poorly early on but it still had a certain charm to it, and has, barring a couple hiccups here and there, only gotten better since.
>>316600568
I usually get phials with X+A lunge if necessary, followed by hold A and release for charged double-slash, X for roundslash, repeat. Shield thrusts (X+A during combo) to move around if needed.
Shield thrusting twice does a quick AED.
Cancel AED with R to buff your shield for 30 seconds per phial for 20% more axe damage, lance-tier blocking, and the ability to do an ultra AED which consumes the shield buff for a OHKO on nearly any monster if well aimed.
After buffing your shield, get more phials and go ham. Cancel ultra AEDs by holding back on the stick to conserve your buff.
You're better off looking for a guard point guide than having me explain the concept. The important thing to note is that you can bind the guard point action to the start/select buttons in the options.

I can't tell if that was his 100th time doing that fight and got lucky or if he actually knows that the Gore charging straight for him WILL be staggered by this next shot and it won't kill him.
>>316612362
Generally it's a little bit of column A and a little bit of column B.
A lot of good precise understanding of stagger limits can let you do things like that pretty easily, but especially when dealing with a non-100% crit rate, you're going to be dealing with some wiggle room where things can go horribly wrong.
Though you're going to need weapons and armor set ups like he has to pull stuff like that off since the amount of damage pumping out is pretty crazy.
>>316612362
Considering his build uses adrenaline and feline heroics I believe, his damage is absolutely through the roof, nearly every other shot staggered the monster. You can also count the damage to staggers like you can status ailments if you know the dmg your weapon does, the dmg to stagger, and make sure you hit the right spot every time.

Monster Hunter Fans are retarded, just liked world of warcraft fans that think WOW is the best MMO, or LOL fans that say it's better then Dota.
Monster Hunter is dated and just a bad phantasy star online clone with a prehistoric skin. MonHun sucks, it's only fun if you play with friends.
>>316615116
>only fun to play with friends
My over 300 hours of near-total solo play say otherwise.
>phantasy star online
I've never understood this comparison. Is it because you fight a boss with other people? Is that it? Please enlighten me as to why exactly you make this claim.
>>316614839
All of them
I like lance for being a a juggernaut in the face of an even larger juggernaut. Rush/bashing through a monster's attack to take advantage of a huge opening is amazing.
Sword and Shield is fun because you're fucking glue, hacking the monster's feet and making it fall over for half the fucking hunt so your team/you can fuck its day.
Charge Blade and Switch Axe are fun for me because I fucking love mechanical weapons, morphing between the two for maximum performance based on the scenario.
>>316615116
oh god stop, pso is shit compared to MH
>>316615558
Monhun pretty much copied the pso formula but had less features (no lock on targeting or other quality of life stuff). As the games progressed pso added more features and Monhun pretty much stayed the same.
Play pso2 and you will see exactly what I mean. It's just a better monhun.
>>316616168
Monster Hunter copied the PSO formula and cutted out the bad from it such as
>Level grinding
>Enemies dropping weapons instead of creating it yourself.
>The mandatory "kill the trash mobs before fighting the boss"
And PSO2 made it worse by adding stupid shit like affixing and to to top it of, it has one of the most retarded weapon upgrading system. It barely passed because at least you didn't break your weapon if the upgrade process failed.
I'm glad I stopped playing it after the DDOS, and I see no reason to lament over missing out the POS1 train
>>316616168
>No lock on targeting
Why would it? Lock on is for hitting the monster in general in games where attacking different hitzones is not a priority. It would only get in the way of reading tells and hitting specific body parts. Target Cam only got implemented in the first place because it was better than not using a stick for many people.
Anyways, I think I'd rather not. Everything I'm reading up on it about suggests that they may share some basic elements of a similar genre, that of being a hunting game, but that doesn't mean Monster Hunter is a clone of it any more than Terraria is a clone of Minecraft or Smash is a clone of... I don't fucking know, Street Fighter. Some fighting game.
>Monhun pretty much stayed the same
HEH.
You really believe that, don't you? Do you really think nothing has changed?
Every weapon has been given new moves, and new mechanics. Their damage values adjusted, their movements made more fluid, everything about them polished over years to a near-mirror sheen, so that even the worst weapon in terms of hunting time is still fun and can be surprisingly dynamic.
New monster types are introduced regularly. Entirely new species. New styles. Leviathans. Brute wyverns. Temnocerans. Snake Wyverns.
Every generation, some new mechanic. Slime/blast. Swimming. Mounting. Climbing and jumping. Exhaustion. Resistances to status and traps. Blights. New statuses. Hell, we're about to get fucking styles that change up the moveset, and arts which are basically super moves you charge up during combat. We're about to get a new approach to the material grind for upgrading equipment. We're about to get a new way to approach combat in Nyantas. Customizeable second screen mechanics. New weapons.
>>316617397
Lock on targeting in pso allows you to target different parts of whatever you want to hit. And if you have a ranger he can create weak points you can lock on too as well. It's very useful with bosses over 12 times bigger then your character and with 30+ weak points you have to break. Although, they are terrible for certain fights and certain weak points. If you are a ranged class you need to know when to lock and when to fps, there is a finesse to it. Locking on to the a moving arm might put you in bad position if the boss moves and you use a dash attack. Or if you are ranged and lock on to certain weak points you wont hit if you are not at a certain elevation or another body part is in the way and you need to know how to adjust.
When I said that MonHun has stayed the same, I meant in terms of features. The game has hardly evolved, I played MH3 on the wii and it was pretty much like the psp version I played years ago. New monsters, balancing, quest and weapons are just normal stuff you need for new games to be justified. Obviously pso2 has the same, every patch there is something new. But unlike monster hunters we get just like Halloween events with special costumes you can only once, drop events, special quest like timed attacks, Leader boards, added support for 12 man parties, multiple parties in a single instanced online zone, things beyond they reskin of last weeks monster with more hp and a new attack pattern.

How is that not evolving?
>special costumes you can only get once
As should be expected of an MMO. Monster Hunter isn't that.
>special quests like timed attacks
Monster Hunter has that.
>Leader boards
Has that for friends. Does PSO have arena challenges that force you to use a specific weapon and equipment loadout with particular skills? And I don't mean, "you have to equip this," I mean it gives you weapons and equipment you don't have for that one hunt, so it works both as a way of becoming acquainted with new weapons and skills without having to invest materials into them as well as a way to test your personal skill against yourself and your friends in an equal environment.

I honestly found the 3DS controls to be more intuitive than the Tri controls. Holding dodge then moving the stick up or down to dodge up or down worked much better for me than trying to remember which shoulder button went up or down. Other than that, it's not like there was very much difference between the two.
>charm tables
Well, 3U's locked charm tables were awful. Charm tables that switch out every so often are just fine in my books. Although Tri's "everything's on only one charm table" was probably the simplest for sure.
>>316620032
I found swimming to be highly enjoyable with most weapons, but it definitely needed something.
>Olympic Swimmer should have been standard swimming speed
>Pull camera out slightly so you can see the vertical axis better and gauge distance more easily
>Don't make the camera go dogshit whenever you vertical dodge
>Add mechanic where moving the stick after a dodge will cause the hunter to curve their swimming in that direction
For instance, dodge downwards then move the stick forward, and hunter will dodge down then move forward slightly. Dodge forward then move the stick down and they will dodge forward and down
>Dodge upwards at the edge of the water and you basically just jump out of the water and flail until you fall back into it
>compensate for monster movement underwater by making moves that cross distance more effective
I found the gunlance rushing thrust and dual blades forward cut to the sides to be fairly good, but other weapons could have used a bit more distance-closing ability underwater.
>>316620543
Well there's no unarmed attacks in Monster Hunter, but there are quests which require you to be naked and not take any skills at all via talismans.
>>316620431
I do like that monsters in FU had two turning animations for telegraphing their attacks. The slow turn for easy attacks and the fast turn for dangerous attacks.
Also, Garuga was actually fun back then before 4U corrupted him beyond recognition.

>>316623012
Monsters can't heal unless they're sleeping, which they only do once they're at critical health, and only recover to the point of no longer being critical.
Those webms are of people who have mastered the game's mechanics. IF you can't epik xXx_skillShot_xXx then that's entirely you and your lack of skill/understanding. Even an FPS can be clunky if you go online without understanding how to move, aim, shoot, change weapons, or take cover properly.

Assuming I wont bother watching the video, I was under impression that weapons in MHX now follow the overforging system from Tri where you level up that piece of gear till a certain level where you need to provide more than one material to upgrade that gear.
>>316623631
I've actually put at least 400 hours on eachcharacterof each MHand it's all on PSP or 3DS. So I'm used to it, and learned to let my hand rest for a little while after each hunt.
I'd do the same as you if I had a WiiU, though
>>316623410
I don't see them not requiring materials to upgrade the weapon to the next tier. It's probably just axing having two versions of the same weapon with slightly different stats in the same rank for just adding on to it until it's ready to upgrade to the next rank, like overforging armour from low to high rank versions in Tri, except instead of armour spheres, it's monster parts.
They'd be devaluing rare monster parts like mad if they just made it all "KEEP ADDING ON TO IT FOREVER USE THOSE 99 SCALES TO JUST GO STRAIGHT TO TOP TIER." There has to be some kind of gating. There has to be some kind of worth for rare monster parts.
What do you want to bet the initial cost will be higher to compensate, too?
>>316577831
>Monster Hunter
>good combat
No anon. If you want good combat in an RPG you go for Kingdom Hearts or some shit like that. Monster Hunter combat is too slow, and it doesn't have a proper lock-on mechanic. I mean it has a lock-on mechanic, but its not very good and doesn't work on all enemies. Chasing enemies through area after area slowly damaging them is also a pain in the ass and is boring, and your character movement is too weighty to make the chase even fun. The fact that you have stamina makes this even worse.
I will admit the newest Monster Hunter is looking a lot better but I don't have faith in it. Its still Monster Hunter in the end.
>>316623752
Hey man I'm not the one treating the overpowered weapons that haven't been properly balanced in ages like they're the only way to play the game. The game isn't balanced solely around GS/IG/HBG, no matter how much you tout them as being the only thing worth using.

That way the game is perfectly balanced and challenging, and forces the player to utilize his magic to the best of his ability while learning enemy attack patterns and dodging attacks. Now if only Vindictus consisted of more than the same copy-pasted rooms and fodder enemies ad nauseam.

KH1 and 2 are still far more ballanced than BBS and 3D in that regard anon. Reflect and Aero aren't nearly as overpowered as BBS's Surge abilities and 3D's Balloon

From my experience I've found that shakas are
>faster to free hunters from control removing effects
>faster and more effective with their healing and buffing, and don't require a dedicated build to do it
>can harvest monster parts with any build and can be built towards gathering more often or stealing parts directly, instead of requiring a dedicated build to do so at all
>have more utility and damage potential through masks, and take overall less time to max out compared to trying to make multiple cat builds or just finding decent cats at all with 4U's horrendous system
The only thing cats have done better is paralysis builds in P3, otherwise the shakas are objectively better in almost every way
The shakas can even fit into the style of a player who wants to fight without them thanks to last stand and the artillery mask letting them deal an enormous hit at the start and then fucking off for the rest of the hunt

No point in an open world when you can only carry so much which... well taking that out would break the godamn game completely.
You have your harvest tours to fuck around with and given the handheld nature of the series it's perfect for picking up and playing a mission on the train or whatever.
Story wise though yeah, it's ass. I'd love to take AI hunters with me too just because doing hunts solo all the time feels drull and the cats barely do fuck all 80% of the time.
Story wise I'd love it if you were with a gang like the Aces and you could customize them and their patterns of attack etc. It would be good practice for learning team combos before hopping online.

This exact same thing could be said about Monster Hunter.

Not at all. MH doesn't have boring, repetitive dungeons that all feel exactly the same that you need to trudge through to get to the actual fun boss fight.

It literally does.

Would it be broken for MH if AI hunters could learn like Pawns?

>locked in animation for 5 seconds: the game
>best PvE combat
pick one.

Frontier has AI hunters you can use, but I don't know if they're at all useful
I'd prefer a hunting dog or something

>Gets the same amount of carves you do from the body, then gives them to you in the rewards
>Understands blocking and rolling through attacks
>Can be given skills
>Can dress up in silly outfits of your choosingYou have to craft it though.
>Understands what a Hunting Horn is and how to play the songs
They are pretty damn useful.
I once set my cat and AI hunter against a HR1 Kut-Ku and they solo'ed it without my help in about 3 minutes with their G rank gear.
Best PvE combat in goes to Bayonetta, Ninja Gaiden or Divinity Original Sin.
Not hating on Mon Hun, shit is fun but doesn't conpare to the fluidity of Bayo and NG, or the tactical options of Divinity.
Any room?
I wanna hunt.

>Playing MH
>Want to gather a legiacrus plate
>had to break all his parts before capturing him
>ohshitthisistakingforever.jpeg
>Had to do this 7 times
>got the item
>forgot to take the item
>REEEEEEE.jpg
>Well let's try again i really want this
>Do this one more time
>Got it again
I never felt more joy on any game before, this is why i felt in love with it
>>316631442
>Not accepting all rewards all the time
Way to fuck up royally.

what's your HR?

580+
If DDO had the combat of MH and was released in something other than moonspeak it would be one of the best games ever made.
>>316631821
I'm only 430+. Stopped playing months ago when I got there though.
