In one of the canon stories released in the compilation (so as canon as Crisis Core which is the only place it's suggested Aerith has any feelings for him at all), Zack meets Aerith in the lifestream and when he flirts with her she blows him off because the only reason she even summoned his consciousness back out of the lifestream is to help Cloud. Also she's confirmed as a maiden.
So Zack had a girl that he was super in love with, who he thought of in his last moments, and after he dies he finds out she fell in love with a dude who he died to save who literally copied some of his memories, and he never even got to fuck her.
