Have it be more like a city builder, but based on what you would do in the Dark Cloud series when rebuilding towns. You can choose what villagers you want to move in without fucking around with kicking them out and stealing them from other towns. However, each villager will have certain requirements, and you'll even have to build their house for them. Requirements such as proximity to landmarks, trees, water, other villagers, even things pertaining to the house like color. It would be a puzzle to arrange the town to the satisfaction of both yourself and the villagers, so that the game has more to go through before it ends. I'm not that creative, so after I got the villagers I wanted I didn't have anything to do. Putting in something that can enable problem solving and not just grinding and waiting would be welcome.

1) I like the roommates idea someone posted earlier
2) Take everything from Happy Home Academy and stick that into a mainline game. Then double it. Actually seeing the villagers respond and interact to the theme of their surroundings was wonderful, just give me more.
3) Make it so certain actions in game can unlock item catalogs. It keeps me coming back waiting for an item to randomly pop... But when I don't see what I'm waiting for for a full year? Shit's annoying.
I know you can't just hand shit out, so put it behind achievement walls of some kind.
4) More minigames. I'm not saying bring back the NES stuff from the first game, just make up mini games like you did for Splatoon's loading screens.
5) More places to socialize with villagers and trigger unique dialogue... Kinda ties in with the happy home academy thing I said above.
6) Make it so clothes don't turn sleeveless already... And maybe pants too?
7) Vanity request, an item that lets you listen to whatever music when you're outside.

thats a given for every game isn't it though.
I am a chef so I kinda want a lot of stuff involving culinary arts and hospitality.
I liked the idea they had with you being able to work at the roost and prepare drinks for characters but there is a lot of room for them to expand on that concept.
I would also like more in-depth drink making, as well as character critiques.
And maybe drinks lasting more that one quick gulp, like you could just hit a the a button if you wanted them to down the drink and bounce, but otherwise they might sit there and enjoy it slower.
And tea/ other drinks. I made a tea room in my house for fun but it would be nice if I could really make quests tea or smoothies when they came over to my house etc.
I also want a nice indepth cooking system. could start out like working at the roost, learning dishes under a chef character. There could be different characters that can teach you different cuisines. The characters would write themselves. I've worked with Italian, French, English, German chefs and more and they're always rather true to the characteristics of their nationality (& culinary heritage)

Alright here we go.
A while back I wanted to make an AC clone with all the things it needs, and everything people wanted. I haven't started and probably never will, but here's what would've been in it.
More fruits
Gardening
Cooking (works like cooking mama)
WAY more dialoge
Each villager has unique dialogue
Personality types (lazy, snooty, etc) only affects what they do, and not what they say.
You can have a personality type
Villagers with bigger houses.
The current village size is one acre. You can walk between acres, with a screen transition between. The world is 5x5 acres, bordered on the bottom and sides by ocean, and on the top by mountains.
Only the one acre is fully settle-able, chosen by you, but you can build some things in other acres. Some buildings are exclusive to non-town acres.
Each acre is a different biome, with different trees, plants, wildlife, landmarks, etc.
The northmost acres have caves, which you can mine and explore in. You can find treasure too!
Cutesy battle system, but non-violent. Mainly based on scaring enemies away or, at most, giving them a little bop on the head with a stick or something. That's not what the axe is for, you edgelord.
Gather resources to speed up building. (you don't have to.)

The things I want AC to be are things I imagine most of its fans would hate. It's too focused on grinding money and doing repetitive tasks to buy garbage. It's a decoration game with mmo-like addiction mechanics to keep people invested. It suffers a lot from the carnival ride approach to interacting with the player, but also tries to encourage the login for dailies approach to playing it.
It's just a really grating experience for anyone that doesn't want an experience like that. The idea of building your own town with cute little animal people who have their own personalities and relationships is a good one. But Jesus, it's closer to Cookie Clicker than it is Sim City.

And villager interaction.
I think they did a lot for the former with New Leaf. But neglected the latter heavily.
If they refocus on making the villagers worthwhile, I think these games will have much more longevity.
