Yokai Watch /may/ appeal to a younger demographic, which is always good, and there are plenty of older fans who'll give it a shot, but this game is so much more heavily rooted in Japanese culture and mythology than Pokemon ever was- and Pokemon was in pretty fucking deep.
I don't think it'll ever have a chance of displacing Pokemon, but I do hope it provides a legitimate challenge to it. Considering the success of Yokai Watch in Japan and the lack of an announcement of Pokemon Z so far, I'd like to think Game Freak is actually, you know, putting some fucking effort in.

I love Yo-Kai Watch. I played Honke in Japanese but my knowledge of the language is rudimentary so I'm having a lot of fun with the localized original. I finished the story and beat Wobblewock so I'll catch all the Yo-kai and finish quests.

The demo is a really bad representation. That is basically the whole combat system, but the demo left out key things like pinning enemies, the demo healed between every fight and gave you your soultimate fully so you just destroyed every fight instantly, and you werent able to use items to attempt to tame.
Now, the combat system isn't AMAZING regardless. But the demo made it seem much worse than it is. The rest of the game is comfy and charming enough to make up for the mediocre combat system.
