Batttle chasers is a comic from the late 90's that was pretty popular but got discontinued when it's creator decided to move on to video game stuff. After a while of that he got together with a few people from the studio that made the darksiders and set up a kickstarter to revive battle chasers as JRPG styled game, which was successful. I believe that robots name is Calibretto and he is one of the playable characters in battlechasers.
I'm actually happy this will be funded.

I just want to say man, aesthetically, I like what they're doing with the setting and the characters. People complain all fucking day about being tired of generic Tolkienesque fantasy settings and people complain all day that the "correct" way to do diversity is to introduce new IPs representing whatever minority instead of complaining about existing white characters. Good, at the very least you actually support your game. The the most I ever want anybody to do. You do not know how aggravating it is to hear people gush over a game and then they never even play it. KoF13 being a huge culprit of this. As to reiterate, SG's is not a bad game at all (That would go to UMvC3 and KI, Rock Papaer Scissor simulators) but as you said the game gets tons of changes which comes with pros and cons. That's my hypothesis on why the competitive scene isn't as big as it could be, the constant updates. But alas, I'm no pro, so this is only speculation.
I kind of like the game, but Mike Z would do well to change several mechanics I don't like.
For example, why not make it 3D? 2D is good, I guess, but with the power of the PS4 they could do much more. Kind of like the Withcer 3 for PS4. That game had godlike graphics and Indivisible Labs should try to do that too.
Another thing I didn't like was how many characters there are. There's too many and it's not like many of them are cool.
The only cool one, I think, is Dhar. Everyone else is a girl or too black, and I don't like that. Like Witcher 2 had a lot of white people, and it was a good game so.
Also, there should be spells, like dragon-shout from Skyrim or Fireballs from Dark Soul. Those games had magic and this one doesn't, so.
It's not a good game until it has 3D graphics. Maybe more open world or something? WOuld be good for the game.

And even though there are a few gloomy girls here and there, Razmi feels pretty original. Probably because they're very rarely part of the main cast
Archers are almost always elves with a ranger theme. Having an actual mongolian themed character keeps zebei from being too typical (although he's easily the least interesting of the prototype cast) and Phoebe seems pretty cool by turning a ton of upper body strength into the ability to be more like a human ballista (although in the trailer they did show a character that basically just looks like robin hood).
