It's an AAA game and people are still freaking out about what side to join in the end since they're equally good and shitty, and that it's a deeper philosophical division between the factions than simply their view of what's good.
Philosophy of the mind is a central theme this time around, and as someone who have studied it, I know where I stand regarding sentient machines. What I need is someone to tell me if the machines are made in the same way as today's computers. If they're grandiose turning machines then I won't consider them sentient. And that was my stance. Then I heard about how they got build, and was closer to human bones and tissues being put together in tubes than just bodies with computers for brains.
On one hand the Institute made them and they're probably the top scientists in the world at the moment, they if anyone should know if their shit is sentient or not. Then again, it may be that the parts that's responsible for designing the robots simply are hiding it, and it wouldn't be awfully hard to do; today you can have two scientists talking to each other about how the eye works, yet when it get's cutting edge, the one talking about the front will barely speak the same language as the one concerned with the end of it.

You can change your companions weapons and armor, and even put them in power armor. But as far as I can tell, they can run out of ammo and default back to their original weapon.
