The history of Super Smash really confuses me, and it makes me wonder just what Sakurai's involvement in Smash has been over these years. I'm beginning to think he's like the George Lucas of game development, as if he, over time, got a bloated ego or something and began to give the other developers less free reign over what they're doing and ended up with the mess the Brawl was.
Melee, at the very least, has a lot of things that developed into the "meta" that're unintended like wavedashing which manipulates the games physics, but there are lots of other things that can't be an accident from a programming perspective, like Smash DI, L canceling, wall teching and stuff like that. Granted I'm not 100% sure how likely those things are to be accidents but I know with at least Smash DI, it almost certainly isn't.
There's a framework for the game beyond just accidents that expects the player to have a high level of cognizance of the game in order to take advantage of, and yet when Melee started having players get passionate about doing just that, Sakurai cracked down like people suddenly getting good at the game, and having something of a skill ceiling beyond retard with two hands was a bad thing. Then we end up with Brawl.
Is Sakurai insane? Melee is a beautiful thing because it's easy to pick up but hard to master, which I thought was something that basically every game developer wants and a formula that prints money, but Sakurai is for whatever reason beholden to the idea that losing to someone better than you ruins the game and decided to actively impede that with no hitstun, lower DI, tripping etc. etc. etc..., and actively STATED that he hated people who played competitively, and this guy is an actual gamer who plays other games for leisure. I think he's insane.

They say right there in the direct that he's unlockable -in the game- and the card (yes, card. not amiibo) that comes with first print copies (ie, not a pre-order bonus or anything you pay extra for) is just literally a key so you can skip whatever the probably casual as fuck unlock condition is.
