Who else was able to get Fallout 4 to run on your shitty old PCs? After a lot of frustration I was able to get it to run on my laptop, an old HP Pavilion G7 with a 512mb ATI graphics chip and 12gb of RAM. It runs like shit at the absolute lowest settings at only 15-20fps at best, but it's playable.
It looks terrible in the screenshots, but it's enough for me to play in motion
It runs much better in indoor areas though, getting a smooth 30fps

It should run if you have 8gb of RAM, I think that's the absolute most important thing for the game. It wouldn't run at all when I only had 4gb of ram and had to buy an 8gb stick just to get it to start.

Even on a 780 on max settings the game still looks and runs like ass OP.
Your not really missing anything as the gameplay is streamlined and the Story/RPG elements are nonexistent.

For some reason I can't hit anything for shit in FO4 outside of VATS, and I don't know why.
I can hit shit just fine in 3 and NV, but I keep missing and my aim seems to veer wildly off in 4. I know part of it is everyone moves so erraticly in this game and there's a lot of elevation differences, but that doesn't explain the discrepency. Maybe I need to remove mouse acceleration.

LOL, I'm surprised it even ran to begin with, that's not a 3d graphics chipset at all. It's probably crashing because it can't handle the bigger open area anymore. You can try these fixes though, might help.

I can run it with about 35 fps on medium settings with godrays off. Overall it looks good.

Playing on medium/high with godrays off, stable 60 fps, game looks OK. I like the stylized graphics and artstyle desu. I like the visuals more than Witchers 3, but that's probably because I couldn't run it on ultra.

Disable the Ambient Occlusion and set your shadow quality to Low.
That's literally all you need but if you still experience some framerate issues then consider setting to the lighting to High instead of Ultra.
Also grass fade to the lowest on the slide bar. Everything else can be slightly over half way.
DISABLE WETNESS IN THE ADVANCE OPTION or else you'll get THIS when it rains.

Are you using a AMD cpu? If then you're fucked since AMD has a shitload of driver overhead, otherwise lower shadows to medium and godrays to low. It runs fine for me on a 290 after that.

Well it's Bethesda but it's also AMD since it's worse on their side. There's still driver overhead even with a 4790k OC'd to 4.7 when you look at benches. This game is heavily CPU bound until you start running 4k.

The framerate goes pretty smoothly but whenever the game has to load the horizon or when I look at an area with complex shadows it freezes for a few minutes then resumes

well you have PCIe 3 so any modern card is good, the real issue is if your power supply can work, so to make it simple, buy a GTX 750ti and be sure to get the REFERENCE card, not any of EVGA's editions. That card specifically needs no extra power. But it pegs you at about Xbone hardware, so you gotta research and probably upgrade your PSU for moar power.

I think what makes it drop is Ultra forces anti-aliasing on the rays and makes them sharper but it looks better on low/medium because they're softer which is more realistic.

here's the trick to 60 fps even on toasters:
iShadowMapResolution=2
turn off all the extra other crap in settings
godrays = 0
and then in game open console
type:
toggleSky
enjoy 60fps

The god rays are tessellated so sort of right. It's basically hairworks in TW3 all over again. Setting it at 16x in CCC hardly looked any different.

Still have to lower EVERYTHING and tweak shit in the .ini document. Get 60fps most of the time, but it freezes up every 5-10 minutes for 30 second breaks and it blows. I think it's the RAM.

If you can't set a certain feature to max without achieving your target frame rate then you should disable that feature completely. Don't make your game look like Halo 5: Guardians.

The intel compiler works by detecting the vendor and executing unoptimized code for non-intel cps's (thats why even changing your cpu id can get you a substantial performance increase) guess what, A LOT of software uses the intel compiler.

If you have less than 8GB of RAM don't even bother. Even if you have a good GPU and CPU, having less than 8GB will make it absolutely unplayable.
It uses a new technology where data is constantly streamed to the player as they walk around in the world, in order to reduce load times. They wanted to do this in Skyrim but the PS3 and X360's limited memory couldn't handle it.
Problem is it doesn't actually work and load times aren't reduced. It just turns the game into a giant memory whore.

Basically everything in the game involving movement is faster the higher the framerate is. The speed at which you move, swing your melee weapon, objects fly when bumped into, etc. are all increased the higher the framerate it. It's something you would expect from an indie developer, not a company that's been in the business for over 20 years.
I have tried playing with the framerate unlocked and can confirm what happens in the video is 100% real. If there's any consolation it's that outdoors you'll rarely be exceeding 60 fps on anything but a 980ti/Fury.

The only thing I could think of is the number of lights in the area cause it to go spastic. I just kind of powered through it and haven't had any issues since.

i'm able to run this game with textures on ultra with a 670gtx, a quad core oc to 2.8ghz and 4gb ram ddr2 (both from 2007)
and so far i only had fps drops in huge parts of the game and even at the point never worse than 35fps

I pirated and tried the game out of curiosity and it was definitely playable on Low settings 1080p. Ran above 40 fps most of the time, dropping as low as 20 occasionally. It did start to stutter a bit after a while of running around outside, maybe my RAM was filled by then.

My 5850 just about runs game. Turning texture detail to medium and disabling some stuff in the INI config file helped the most. Looks like ass up close but at least it doesn't dip below 25FPS other than on a few occasions.

I noticed the game obviously doesn't have any occlusion culling, just like their previous games. That's why inside areas run worse than outside, because there's much more high-poly detail, especially if you're looking in the direction of the rest of the level. Delete your ini settings files in the f4 and documents folders; there are three in total. If you do a Google search I'm sure you'd be able to find which ones to trash, have it do the automatic detection and select low if you get the option.
Shittays should be off by default, just make sure not to turn it back on.

Finally got home and was able to try it. I turned everything on low and modded the .ini so that godrays would stay off and it was somewhat playable. When I would encounter mole rats, I would see some framerate drop but it was at least doable.
Shit guys, why the hell wont it run. My laptop has better specs than most people here and it just crashes at start up.
