The pipe weapons have killed my enjoyment of this game. Literally all there is and ammo for everything else is too scarce to use the few that aren't. Just why? What sense do they make? They didn't exist in any other game in the series, not even the one that this is almost a direct copy and paste of.

Fallout 2 had pipe guns.
>>
>>316399794
Yeah it really doesn't feel enjoyable at all until you get lucky and stumble across a Short Hunting Rifle and then mod it with a long barrel, scope etc.

Honestly the only weapons that feel decent are the 10mm, Combat Shotgun and Hunting Rifle. I haven't found an Assault Rifle yet but it looks so fucking dumb that I don't really want to.

Yes, and you can mod every weapon to look pretty much however you want. I found a sawn off hunting rifle (yeah, retarded) and modded it to a regular looking rifle, then a sniper rifle.

and they are just "thrown together" weapons anyways so naturlaly they are common.

Peopled called out Bethesda because they couldn't make guns worth a shit. The devs probably just ended up making bullshit looking weapons so they can use a "people in the FO universe are stupid, of course the guns look unrealistic and shitty looking" excuse if they get called out again.

It's basically the idea that the money is a token for something of practical value; gold is deemed precious and so gold backed money means you're currency 'guarantees' you a proportional amount of gold.

With the NCR their currency went from water backed caps (same as above but water was more valuable in the wasteland) to gold backed notes until the Brotherhood sabotaged their gold supply. Now the caps are like our currency, not backed with anything other than the promise of being able to buy something of equal worth to the currency.

Wasteland was a barter economy and there was one thing you could always barter with, water. As civilization started to rebuild trade increased and carrying all that water became impractical so a solution of one bottle cap for one bottle of water iirc.
>>
>>316405154
Doesnt work how?

>>
>>316405137
it's retarded though

you need to drink water, not hoard it

if anything you'd treat the bottlecaps like gold because they're fairly rare and write notes backed by them
>>

>>
>>316405391
EVERY melee weapon is a spear
they break in one hit... and you have to constantly repair
you need power armor in order to carry enough to maintain spear use
>>
>>316405393

Yes but you also need to eat and have clothes and shelter, so before currency, survivors bartered using water to trade for things like food, shelter, clothes. Then they used caps (easier to store than water) backed by water as a currency.

>>316405452
You can if you want to and in certain situations it's a good idea. For example, if an economic crash is coming, exchanging money for gold, while the money is still worth something is a decent idea, however, due to globalization, it's also a safe idea to invest in expensive currencies before yours drops in value, if you have a lot of insider knowledge and can project this, you can essentially profit from any fluctuation via gold/currency shuffling.
>>
>>316405452
No

Not in practice (that's part of why that system is obsolete)
>>
>>316405452
It's not so literal, and relies on a central body managing it. They might not have the amount of gold equal to all the currency it backs, but the central body is assumed to have enough wealth to pay the debts of the currency it distributes. Think the Bank of England for example.

Just as how you couldn't go into a bank and ask for £5 in gold, you couldn't go to the NCR and ask for water for their paper notes. It's more the idea that the central body is acknowledging a proportion of that wealth is yours, and you trade your share with the trade of the note/coin/cap
>>
>>316403958

>foregrips

why did they cut those out?
>>
>>316404671
in the gold standard system, basically, money is paper that has an equivalent amount in gold in the bank (and in theory you could go to a bank and withdraw that amount of gold, I guess). Plenty of banks still back up their currency with a supply of something, though it's not required any longer, of course.
The bank prints the notes and depending on how many notes exist, they're worth a fraction of the gold in the bank.
It's basically an IOU for gold.
In fallout its an IOU for water, since clean water is a valuable (and I guess stable?) commodity

Is there a bank in fallout though? That actually holds the water that the caps are supposed to be representative of?
Water seems like a bad idea, I know its rare but fuck, if you find a clean source its like finding a well of gold that mines itself.
Can't vaults with water chips effectively print money?
>>
>>316400619
>it fits the aesthetic
nah, pic related would've fit the 1950's/early 60's aesthetic. It looked space age back then, and it looks space age now. The "assault rifle" in Fo4 fits a faggy steampunk World War 1 aesthetic.
>>
>>316406040
So the punchy weapons are good, then?
Is it most of them decent, or just specific ones?
>>
>>316405452
you could in theory, but it's pointless since you'd only get a small lump of gold equivalent to your money, which would be hard to transport and trade. It's easier to just have a bunch of paper that represents the gold, and the bank that provides the paper guarantees that the gold exists and is worth what it says.
>>
>>316404847
New caps are still minted out west. I don't even know why they're the established currency in the east
>>
>>316406506
Water is hard to transport, there is little to no water infrastructure. Caps, in the lore, are used because they are finite, hard to counterfeit and easy to transport. Outside of the lore, it's a commentary on consumerism and the deification of brands.

I mean, as opposed to water, it could use some future shit, like radiation, to cool the barrel, so you don't have to piss in it every 10 seconds like an actual water cooled machinegun
>>
>>316406506
Keep in mind water was rare before the NCR established trade routes and the Capital Wasteland had the purifier running, and still is outside of these territories. It seems purifiers are common in the Commonwealth by the time FO4 takes place.

What that means is that water was only common after the NCR used a gold standard, so the water was valuable when it was backing the caps.
>>
>>316402686

Bethesda's Fallout is, if anything, more retro-futuristic than Black Isle's Fallout. The only really retro-futuristic part of Fallout 1 or 2 were the vaults, the intro cinematics, and maybe the power armour and some of the energy weapons. Everything else had this grungy, over-the-top look, like a lot of the games of the 90s.

90% of Fallout 1 and 2 only looked like it might have been retro-futuristic once, decades ago, if you squinted.

Interestingly enough, pretty much exactly that can happen in Fallout 1 - in one random encounter, you find an overturned truck full of bottlecaps. Depending on your character build, you could find enough to never have to worry about money again.

Remember that (in the west, at least) bottlecaps were only used in areas without much infrastructural (re)development. In Fallout 1, no one really had the means to start printing currency, and New Vegas takes place in a no man's land where no one's currency is really trusted. In Fallout 2, everyone uses NCR-made coins (and the NCR haven't even taken over everything yet!).

Fallout 1 is like barter/pre currency where people would use gold instead of goods to barter.
Fallout 2 is like Roman empire era, where basically everyone accepted Roman currency
Fallout New Vegas is like early/pre industrial where people basically new the value of each currency (franks, pounds, livres) and would transact in any of them.

That stock is terrible, it provides a terrible cheek weld. Side fed magazine, if it feeds from a magazine at all why does it have a massive cooling jacket? Those sights are tall as fuck, they should be much lower. It looks very unwieldy, I can't even pass that off as its just made from scrape, a lot of it looks like the parts were specifically designed to be retarded.

Fuck man, they could've just used simple guns and looked up actually home made firearms instead they make this shit. Guns were a very well understood and developed tech in the 50s

Power armor increases melee damage. Strength scales ridiculously with damage. Strength has actually good perks, including power armor-related ones. Endurance is good now. Lategame melee weapons are fucking devastating. Almost every armor legendary drop I've found would work for melee.

Bethesda's theme for FO4 revolves around soft round shapes, which is why there are a fuckton of pipe weapons. This is also reflected elsewhere in enemy models such as Yao Guai, Deathclaws, and Mirelurks, as well as the environment itself ranging from machinery to the layout of certain areas. Even the new power armor design carries this theme with the more compact outline and added bulkiness.

Fallout 4 is a Fallout Gameâ„¢

It only exists to be a Fallout Gameâ„¢

It doesn't exist to further Fallout's story or develop it's world or even to be a good game, only to make money off a known IP.

The /very first/ mission of the game has you
>receive a dog companion
>receive a suit of power armor
>fight a Deathclaw

because it's a Fallout Gameâ„¢ and these are all recognizable trademarks of other Fallout games. Same reason why they use caps.
There is no attempt at nuance, tact, or subtly, because they are here to sell a product, The Fallout Gameâ„¢.

Okay, I'm here to explain the reasoning behind the pipe weapons. It's not good reasoning, but there is a deliberate thought process behind this.

Take where FO4 has its setting: Boston. Very much rooted in maritime tradition and industrial development. A post-industrial society sees these pipe weapons as being silly, but a post-apocalyptic society takes its inspiration from what's left behind. There's lot of pipes and rounded shapes left behind in The Commonwealth; the whole aesthetic of the steam-driven economy still exists in Boston. That's why you have these sort of steam/dieselpunk-like weapons laying around.

It's not great reasoning, since there's a shit-ton of better inspiration for weapons laying around. The laser musket is retarded too, but it also makes sense when you think about it from the same standpoint. I just don't understand why they didn't have the post-apocalyptic wastelanders look at better inspirations for weapons than pipes and Revolutionary War museums. The bayonets are a great addition, though: love them.

In Fallout4 on the tip-screen it also says that Nuka Cola was so popular that they made a ton of it (enough for 200 years), so the quantity is there too.
>>
>>316399263
Really only three glaring issues with this gun as far as I can tell.
First, the tube going outside and around the cooling chamber to reach the recoil chamber is just bad design. That connection should be as short, sturdy, and protected as possible because the gun wouldn't be automatic without it.
Second, the pistol grip is where the recoil spring should be.
Third, it's a machine gun. That magazine would be out of ammo in a second.

One last nitpick, too many parts of this gun look too modern. The cooling chamber might look retro, but nothing else does.

It's been explained many times in this thread why bottlecaps are a currency in Nevada in the first place, and since it's a logical conclusion to make I don't see why other societies in other regions wouldn't reach this conclusion as well. And once they had, there's no real reason to change it. Especially when there are many more much pressing issues to address as a society, why would you bother changing a perfectly fine system of currency?
As for the barter system, that still exists in the modern world all over the place. Especially areas rife with poverty or without a central/active government. i.e. exactly the kind of conditions as the wasteland or even a semi-developed and anarchic region like the Commonwealth
>>
>>316427971
It's the modification system.
Each weapon platform can go from pistol to rifle (or at least a very short to very long weapon). Change the receiver from a semi-automatic to full-auto.
By default, that assault weapon is semi-automatic.

For example, the Pipegun is the most versatile, it's modification list can make it go from a tiny pistol to an SMG or assault rifle, and extended further to a sniper rifle making use of different ammo types.

Make use of the cover system (sight up when your face is to a wall, causing the weapon to point down), it will always peek you out far enough to get a clear shot and pull you back when you go back to hip aim.

One of the few good things about this game is that they included proper gunplay and added a stupid nerf so that VATS no longer freezes time to allow you to properly analyze and plan your shots, it only slows it down like 50% so the enemies are only slightly less pressing than in real-time. VATS accuracy is utter shit compared to real time combat, so they effectively made real time combat enjoyable while at the same time removing the only reason I ever used that garbage system in the first place

Yeah, apparently the .45 magazine turns a combat shotgun into an automatic rifle, despite the disparity of the barrel size. I don't mind it though

>>316439373
There's custom ammo, but it's restricted to specific legendary modifiers only. Such as explosive smg ammo.

Looks like a Sterling modified for a heavier round. The extra tube is for the gas to be used to cycle the gun.

It looks tacked on because it is tacked on. It's a cobbled together weapon. Looking at the barrel and that's a water cooled barrel from a Browning.

Now, going by the barrel being from a browning that might e a heat pipe going from the water to a heat sink to provide extra cooling. I doubt you'd be carrying around a spare water tank, after all.

Then it could be both a heat pipe and a gas vent.
>>
>>316439373
Few people ever gave a fuck about custom ammo in NV. They'd just slap in whatever ammo they had that would fit their gun.

By default, I didn't see any benefit to the other types of ammo in NV. I was loaded with so much standard ammo, and all of the match grade / performance / piercing ammo all appeared to have more detriments than benefits. The difference in damage was minimal but the wear on weapons was severe.

I was better off machining those back to normal bullets and putting a few more of those rounds into the enemy.

There's no point in carrying around the basic frame if you've already got one. You can use them without fusion cores anyway, you just can't fast travel or use VATS/Sprint if it has no core.
>>
>>316439871
It was more than just custom ammunition in NV though, the system allowed you to reload your own ammunition. You could create new types of ammo for different enemies, I know I used a modified .45-70 gov't for certain power armored assholes with a higher DT and thus I needed higher damage output per round. You could also save spent shells and use components from other, less useful ammunition to craft more rounds for your preferred weapon rather than spending the caps for the rounds.
It was a great system.
>>316440097
I don't play the game like a first person shooter, I play it as a roleplaying game, as it should be. VATS was never anything more than a shoehorned attempt to make certain turn-based skills relevant in a real-time combat environment. Which, for the most part, worked somewhat well when it actually froze time and allowed the combatants to take turns, in a way. Now that they have removed skills for whatever fucking reason, as well as removing the turn-based aspect of VATS, a system designed to keep turn-based combat in the game, it's basically 100% worthless.

It looks more like it was manufactured by someone with some scientific know-how, from parts scrapped and prospected from ruins.

NV does a professionally-built gauss rifle better, anyway. Face it, just because it's from a Black Isle title doesn't automagically make it better.

Heh, it depends. You're living in a time where there is probably little to no Tetanus vaccines. And Tetanus can become so bad it causes you to break your own bones. So that nail scratch could in theory lead to several fractures over a few months of time.

Yes, I am. Primarily because, let's be real here: if you're in a resource-scarce situation like The Commonwealth is clearly in (still, somehow, more than 200 years after the Great War...whatever, Bethesderp), why would you waste material on prettying up your design? It looks like it would work: stable power flow, electromagnetic hoodookery: check; everything you need for the gun to work is there.
>>
>>316449231
>If you have the know how and resources to build a fucking railgun, you're not going to build one that looks like scrap metal.

nah I had the same thing happen to me. I was in a fire fight and wanted to switch to my 10 mm via hotkey but it wouldn't come out, so I tried my pipe rifle and it wouldn't come out. I was then convinced I just fucked up my hotkey and started pressing all of them and eventually got my knife out. later I tried it again out of combat and everything was fine and pulled out in a reasonable amount of time. might be a bug, I don't even bother with favoriting anymore, I just go into pipboy to switch weapons since that fiasco

>>
>>316449656
Jury-rigged doesn't mean that it's necessarily cobbled together. The wires are unshielded, that's the biggest niggle you should have with the gun, and even then you can maintain it so the wires don't corrode.

Besides, why would it just magically explode if it works? It's electromagnetism, there's no fucking combustion happening, and the thermal radiation resultant from pushing through all that power is being vented. So long as the chamber has release points for the pressure differential, there's no risk of explosion no matter how it looks.
>>
>>316449418
It's not the drawing speed, the weapon literally doesn't exist for a good bit. Occasionally they'll draw just fine, and sometimes they don't come out for five seconds. Other times my hands will be in the position like they're holding a weapon, but the weapon just doesn't exist and he'll draw it a second later
>>316449756

>>
>>316449910
Do you not understand how fucking railguns work? Do you not understand why we don't even have anything close to a working prototype for a railgun small enough to be mounted on a truck let alone carried by hand? It's because you'd need some extremely advanced technology to make it work without breaking instantly or failing entirely. That's not the kind of thing some jackass can build especially if he's too stupid to shield wires that will destroy the gun if they're damaged slightly.

A similar thing tends to happen in Skyrim, (at least when I use the equip set hotkey, like switching between dual wield, sword and shield, and two-handers) Sometimes it would take forever to have the equipment change.

I think it is more noticeable in f4 because of the custom appearance due to mods, which increase the loading by additional steps
