Fucksakes, they got lost in that facility with the first glow head monster encounter and ended up going the opposite way when they realized they had to exit the area.
Their spatial awareness is generally pretty lacking, although that can possibly be blamed on the fact that they aren't 100% mentally invested into what is going on, but it happens way too often to be a valid excuse. Also, not shutting up during important reveals or details doesn't help either.

Accel World is by the same author as Sword Art Online. The author wrote SAO first, realized it was shit, and declined to have it published. A few years later, he wrote Accel World, which takes place 60+ years after the events of Sword Art Online, and has a much better premise, characters with actual flaws, a far more interesting story, etc...
Then, his publisher got their hands on his earlier SAO shit and decided to see what would happen if they published it. It took off in popularity.
I'd seriously suggest watching Accel World, even if you hated SAO. One thing though, the main character of Accel World is... different. When the show was airing, a hell of a lot of people couldn't stomach him at all. He turns out to be a fuckload more interesting than any of SAO's characters though, that's for sure.
