Is this game really worth playing all the way through ?
I love the first DS but this one seems like its difficutly is artificial

Yes, it's a great game and it's actually Easier than Dark 1 in most spots.

Git gud my man, I'm doing a no shield run of Dark Souls and it's fun as fuck. It feels like a completely different game.

The only real problem I have with DaS2 are lifegems. Completely ruin the game.

Yeah but they somehow completly messed up dodging which incidentally makes you rely on shield even more.

I don't like to compare it to DS1. It's still a good game, just don't play with a shield and raise your adaptability until your agility is 110.

People who are playing the game for the first time + everyone alse because at the start of the game your adaptability stat doesn't let you doge shit, doesn't help you don't get a 100% physical damage reduction shield unitl after 2 bosses and 3 areas

>>Estus Flask has only 1 charge at the start

Good question, cause it's certainly not the thing everyone praises in these threads all the time.

ADP helps a little, but it doesn't make up for the enemies spinning in place to always hit you, and having immense lag on their hitboxes so even after they finish swinging you'll still take damage.

Enemies look intimidating at first, but they're easy as fuck to kill, especially if you have a rapier.

Your worst fucking enemy in this game is the level design. You're gonna have to do a lot of jumping in tight spaces, especially if you wanna get those hidden treasures, and the damage you get from falling is fucking ridiculous.
>>
>>315774397
excellent effort to miss the point, I also like the epic memetext friend ;^)
>>
>>315773512
Sure its real, but that isnt the point. Same shit happens in every fromsoft game, the gooks cant do hitboxes.

Ive beaten the boss dozens of times on high ng's, the only thing in that webm thats happened to me is the hilt of his sword touching me once, but never the second half of the webm.

Rare cases arent the best proof.

You mean it was better in DS1 where
>strafe left
>never get hit
>backstab
was the only strategy needed for 90% of the game?

Both games have their share of problems, but they're both great games anyhow. DS1 elitists like to pretend DS1 had no flaws at all.
>>
>>315774431
I wish you could get the dragon faction earlier in 2. I like the dragon armor.

Sucks that you can't get it until like right before the Giant Dreams.
>>
>>315774610
Strafing was too OP in DaS1, but the tracking in 2 was pretty BS, basically made it so if you wanted to dodge, you had to rely on the iframes which basically meant put points into adp or go shields.

Well yea, that's the idea. You shouldn't just be able to walk around attacks, it makes the game way too easy (see DS1).
Dark Souls 3 doesn't seem to fix this issue though (wish I had the webm saved of the dude spinning while lying on the floor).

>>315774739

>>
Ive only played the first area of ds2, but I can tell off the bat that ds1 has more stellar level design. I mean just compare the undead burg with the first area of ds2, its like black in white in terms of level design. Also ds1 has a more subtle yet powerful story and atmosphere, but ds2 keeps shoving the whole "LOL YER GONNA DIE!" thing in your face, with that unnecessary 10 minute long intro.

So yeah, shameless steam refund after 1 hour of playing it.

I've only read the first area of your post, but I can tell off the bat that my post has more stellar reasoning.

DS2 level design never gets as good as DS1's best, but it also never gets as bad as DS1's worst.

Honestly, aside from lava land, I didn't really feel any of the changes were that BS. I haven't beaten it yet, I just beat the tomb, but so far I feel its been generally fair.

Only part Id say is really BS is all the Alonne knights they put into lava land. Thats pretty BS.
>>
>>315770595
Man the first hour of Dark Souls 2 was so fucking shitty goddamn.

You're forced to either go to the forest or the tower and both lead you in a loop, neither is very interesting, and neither have anything you really want beside shit you need to progress.

Meanwhile in Dark Souls you had a dozen of places you could go, most of the bosses were optional, you could tackle shit in any order you wanted, you could explore areas and get cool stuff well ahead of the traditional path. It was just so freeing and a joy to explore.

I mean some people get so caught up on what they're supposed to do they don't even realize just how free they were. Don't go to New Londo, son't go to the Catacombs, Don't go to the valley of the drakes, don't here don't go there, people say this shit but fuck you there is good shit in those places and if you're good you can go there you can grab shit and you are rewarded for doing so. Your first hour of Dark Souls can be spent just exploring shit, the only barrier to your exploration is sens fortress and the golden gates, other than that it's up to you how you want to proceed, where you want to explore next and how far you want to go.

Fuck Dark Souls 2 for ruining all that.

Souls series just keep getting worse.

But From will keep milking this 10 years from now.
>>
>>315775312
>does it actually make the game less half baked?
nope
>>
I had my fun but they "fixed" (yay for splitting Endurance into other stats, boo for Soul Memory and not just scaling weapons or something) the DaS problems with dumb things and made the game waaaay more linear. Also, far too easy.

The real joy of DaS, for me, was figuring out you'd been 5 feet away from the third-the-last area THE ENTIRE TIME. The level design and enemy placements are excellent.
>>
>>315775167
But he's right. The level design in DaS2 is garbage. I've played the whole game and I can say that. The Bastille is the like the one zone that actually has some interesting level design with branching path ways and shit.

The DLC kind of rectified this, but that's hardly a good selling point that the content that came out half a year after release makes the design worthwhile.

>>315775312

>>
i was actually disappointed that they just toss you shards immediately, i wanted to struggle a bit.
>>
>>315775202
Blame their bosses. Originally the game was gonna be more open than DaS1 was, with a big overworld connecting all the zones.
Then multiple things happened I understand
Their team got gutted and their bosses told them to make the levels more connected ala DaS1.

So basically late in development, they had to jam all the areas together somehow, even if it didn't make sense, thats why the zones fit together so poorly.
>>
>>315775167
ds1 worst isnt saying much though, because that game has some pretty stellar and memorable areas, some of the best ive ever seen in a game actually. I mean shit just look at the tutorial area, great design right off the bat.

My problem with DaS2 were the sheer amount of mobs with massive health pools. DaS1 had mobs too but the mobs there were usually either naked or soldier hollows that could be taken out in 1 or 2 hits but still did enough damage to threaten you so you wouldn't run in there with your dick out. In DaS2 the Syan and Alonne Knights have gobs of health and they walk around in packs of 3 or more. This would be like making it past the Undead Burg, get to the Undead Parish and then suddenly you have 3 fucking Black Knights at the same time. And before you say it the Balder Knights in the Parish are not the same since they have low health pools but they're the first enemies to actually utilize their shields.

The enemies are not necessarily smarter or harder. But they're a pain in the ass because your only choice is to try and kite them at the tail end of their aggro range since that's the only strategy that doesn't get you killed as a melee character. Which takes fucking forever.
>>

They're are too many to keep track of and if you somehow manage to pass them you've got the bloody Darkdwellers to take care of.
>>
>>315775412
That's the problem with 2's design. Remember all those people that praised the second half of DaS1 for it's fantastic level design? No because no one did that. TotG and Lost Izalith were pretty much straight lines to the boss at which point you'd find a bonfire that warped you back. Which is ALL OF DAS2's base game. Duke's archives had some short cuts here and there but the Crystal Caverns was such a pain in the ass it soiled the entire rest of the level.
>>
>>315775849
The spot I was talking about was ruin sentinels, theres a branch earlier in the level.

And the Shrine is optional (though seems silly to add a second blockade to reaching it)
No comment on the Aerie, not there yet.
>>
>>315770595
>Is this game really worth playing all the way through ?

No. It's an inferior aping of DaS, it's basically like a mod team tried to make a second game and failed. It wasn't made by the real team, it wasn't overseen by the real director, and it is not a real souls game. They get everything wrong in this game from a design perspective.

Just shelve it, pretend it doesn't exist, play 3. Dark Souls 2 is the Highlander 2 of video games.

Alonne and Syan knights can easily be killed in one hit with several weapons.

As far as the dark dwellers go, find the spot where you can use a lockstone about half way in. It turns on torches around the entire area, that'll keep the dark dwellers inside buildings so you can at least ignore most of them.

As for the other enemies, jsut go slowly. If you take each building one at a time, you shouldn't get swarmed too hard

I never had any problems with this.

While I'll agree the enemy design in DS2 was mostly shit I didn't think they had too much health.

I also found it refreshing that damage type actually mattered this time so it wasn't always the best option to use a greatsword on everything the whole game and armored enemies were super fucking weak to blunt weapons.

I dunno why people say maces are bad. I found my damage output with maces was a fair amount higher than with swords. Especially since like half the bosses, especially later, are armored.

The only real flaws I found with the mace are its short reach and its a bit of a stamina hog

That's a design decision partly due to the fact they tied iframes to a stat.
Also the first few bosses are not that easy when you are new to the series and game because of how intimidating they are.

You can reach there through the forest of the giants. After beating the Lost Sinner, you get a branch.

You also get a branch before that, but you should probably use it on the petrified guy in the area so you can continue.

In fact, if you take the forest of the giants route, you can bypass the warf all together. ITs just the second of two ways to reach lost bastille.

Get a weapon with a moveset that allows you to hit as many enemies as possible since you will probably be caught off guard every now and then because enemies are hidden just about everywhere.
Also, consider using a lockstone so you don't have to deal with the dark stalkers.

I got myself a decently upgraded bastard sword and was able to deal with most enemies rather easily.

A few
If you are going for evasion, just practice dodging. He actually telegraphs his moves pretty hard, especially with his dash attack.

If you aren't going for evasion, see if you can summon someone. You know those balista in the boss room? You can use them against the pursuer and they do like a third of his health with each hit so if you can keep him distracted in front of the balista, you can kill him pretty fast like that.

Though be careful, the balista can hurt your allies too

First, recording a webm is a pain when you don't know how, and if you weren'T recording when stuff happens it's a pain to do it again on purpose.

Second, people hate on it because it's worse than in DS1. It's pretty reasonable to think a sequel would improve on mechanics. Especially when nowadays even MMOs have tighter hitboxes.

Third, splitting stats and adding agility is both a pain and unintuitive. If you want to wear heavy armor you have more stats to invest into. If you want to go without a shield you have more stats to invest into. Agility isn't exactly obvious in how it helps either.

Fourth, many players started with DaS2 on PC. Coming from any other decent game, the hitboxes are pretty bullshit, considering how Dark Souls is often commended for it's great combat.

5th ur a faggot

>>
>>315770595
I'd give SotFS a playthrough if you're bored and just want more Dark Souls. You just need to take heed and embrace the fact that it's inferior to DaS in nearly every regard.
>>
>>315777098
Don't be a faggot by using the ballista. Just take it slow and only ever attack when you see the chance for it - his attacks might be easily predictable, but they're also decently fast compared to other enemies at that point in the game.
>>
>>315777098
basically what this guy >>315777254
said but like many of the early bosses, if you just get right up in close and circle strafe around them, they'll lose tracking and just lunge out into the air when they attack you. Keep your shield up though, because some attacks can still catch you on the backswing. This is the simplest easiest way to beat all the early bosses.

except ruin sentinels, in that case summon a buddy and try to split them up.

>>315776901
Circle him to the right with the large leather shield or better, attack after he does, ony 1-2 hits. The only danger with this method is sometimes he's still hit you and break your guard, and very rarely he'll follow up with a downward slash. The morning star or the fire longsword are good enough to do it in a reasonable time if you don't have anything good yet.

You feel a need to parrot your hate boner for it like you are someone who matters? Think your can protect your shit opinion behind the /v/ hivemind? No, loser. I haven't experienced any of the shit in those webm's and I'm pretty certain you have not too.

I had my fair deal of disappointments too and stuff I didn't like. But since then I moved on and I even enjoy the game for what it is. I was vastly improved over the patches and versions.

depends.

If you research stuff as you play then they are piss easy.
>look up where to find special spells etc
>The great axe trivializes most of the game and does not require much skill to use.
Just use the leap attack on things until they die, stunlock bosses to death.
Lots of weapons / items are like that in the game.
>Upgrade your shield and keep medium weight and you can block most attacks and dodge the heavy attacks, super easy playstyle.

Now try playing blind with a leather shield no poise or magic and a scimitar, halfway through the game, its more difficult than what most games offer these days.

Anytime someone says souls games are super easy i generally just assume they are one of the faggots that read the wikipedia before they play rpgs.
>>
>ITT people who have no idea how to play DS2 complain about it.
>>
>>315778745
Though not at the same level, this reminds me of one post I saw a while back where someone said he had used console commands in like Fallout New Vegas to give himself a bunch of shit like strong guns and ammo, then complained the game was too easy.

Some people will complain something is too easy even though they brought the easiness on themselves.

Though as I said, thats a more extreme example
>>
>>315778745
>Anytime someone says souls games are super easy i generally just assume they are one of the faggots that read the wikipedia before they play rpgs

Those are the people who find it hard in the first place. Bad argument.
>>
>>315779095
>>315778745
Theres also the issue where Im pretty sure a fair amount of the people complaining that the game is too easy might just be good at games. To the public at large, the game is probably suitably hard, but just because they personally have no issues, they just say nobody should have trouble with it.

I have a friend who always assumes nobody should ahve trouble with any game hes beaten without much trouble even though hes just really really good at videogames. But because he had no difficulty, he assumes nobody should.

If you fully research a game before jumping into it, knowing everything there is to know about it before even starting, then you are gonna have an easier time than someone who is playing blindly.

Well obviously part of the strategy is to kill the first sentinel while on the platform, that way you just deal with 2 on the ground.
After that, just take it slowly and carefully

Recently did a powerstanced Caestus run, Ruin Sentinels are pretty easy and Caestus being considered a 'hard' run is bs, at least on NG - You do really good damage at almost no stamina cost and can stunlock most humanoids.

Doing the Ruin Sentinels with Melee and no shield is easy, having access to any 100 percent block shield makes it even easier. Just be patient - Really, the only thing that realistically can fuck you over is if the last two sync their spin2win and if you're using a shield, blocking that east like no stamina anyway.

No, it is harder. But because of the wrong reason like input lag is some microseconds longer, less iframes. poise damage on most weapons are lower while your own poise just put you into 3 different recovery speed instead of letting you tank hit. Shields are much shittier. More enemy swarms, boss just have fuck long hitbox etc...

>>315786276
the issues of adp and hitboxes are conflated in the case of souls games, since souls games have lingering hitboxes when you roll, and in DeS and DaS1, your minimum number of roll iframes are used to (ideally) hide this mechanic. However, at low ADP you actually don't have enough roll iframes to protect your lingering hitbox, so you get bullied by phantom hits. Basically, the ADP stat makes the hitboxes artificially worse, and turns it into a mandatory dump stat
>>
>>315772757
This has never happened to me, and will never happen to 99% of people playing. Why do people think this means anything at all? People use this .webm to justify their dislike of the game, even though they dislike it because of all the small things that don't click correctly in their brain. If Dark Souls 2 had been your first Souls game you would most likely love it, then you'd like the original less since it has a lot of flaws that was fixed in the sequel. Things you've played previously and liked seems a lot better to you now than it actually was when you played it. I like Dark Souls 2 less than the original, but I accept that it's because it was my first Souls game and the similarities the two games have in common became boring for me.

>>315780241
They're pretty easy to melee once you figure out that, if you space them a bit and don't lock-on, 90% of the time they don't attack at the same time, only one after the other with enough time to roll through the second attack. Once they both did their attacks, you have a bit of free time where they won't attack at all.

You should try fighting them 3 at the same time at the bottom once. You're going to see what I mean. Their AI changes with the amount of Sentinels alive at the bottom.
>>
>>315786249
Or just blunt weapons in general. Armored enemies (which the ruin sentinels are) are weak to strike damage instead of cut damage, so blunt weapons like maces and hammers do extra damage.

DS2 was my first souls game because of the level of shitposting over it. I played it and was annoyed to the point of quitting over all the obnoxious bullshit posted ITT. The idea seemed interesting though so when I saw a million posts saying DS1 was better I tried that and liked it a lot more.

I'm the guy you are replying to. I experienced it most likely only once since I forgot about it. and like this other anon said >>315784336 it's the correct way to deal with it at low level.

So now what? You have two legitimately bad hitboxes that teleport and I say "legitimate" tentatively because they are only due to a gameplay mechanic. Here is the thing: I have over 400 hours in the Original game + DLC and the Scholar version. I've played it more than once is what I'm trying to say and I have never experienced: giants, sinner, ancient dragon or any other enemy having any of the hitbox problems in these webms. I've defeated all the enemies/bosses numerous times. So in 400 hours I have experienced two bad hitboxes maybe once or twice. So I am supposed to hate the game because shitters on /v/ parrot an opinion and re-post their tired, old, sad videos cherry picked to oblivion? It just looks like slander at this point.

I have always known how to balance my stats and equipment so that may be part of it. If I was doing a level 1 run maybe it would be different but those are not normal gameplay conditions.

I finally got through DS2 after putting it down a month after the PC launch. Kinda thinking about doing another run. What's the best weapon upgrade path? Thanks anon for arguing properly.

I do agree that for the most part they aren't a problem, but it seems to me that you're just top percentage or were very overleveled/overgeared. Take the ancient dragon. If you fight it by staying near its back legs, sooner or later you'll experiences the "magical farts of deaths" that comes out instantly. Another blatant example is the drake before the cathedral. His fire breath can reach to almost all the way down the stairs.

I'm not saying DaS2 is a terrible game. I do enjoy it despite its flaws but I do not think these webms are cherry picked. They clearly show the problem and as such we don't need to make more.

Look at >>315787061 . It's pretty standard gameplay for a mage. Sure he could have been further but cmon, ADP and timing isn't even involved.

>>315787000
FEEL pixel perfect. Of course they aren't pixel perfect. For example, DaS2 came out in March 2014, Vindictus came out in october 2010 and has much better hitboxes on top of being online. Bosses can swing their weapon at like 1 inch from your face and you don't get hit.

>>
>>[half the thread whinning about hitboxes and stuff]

My only real problem with DaS2 is that stats matters a lot more. In DaS1 you can easily git gud and finish the game with most classes' starting gear. In DaS2 you need to invest quite a lot of souls into VIT, END and ADP to have a similar experience. Like some anon said, no matter how gud you are, you just don't have enough iframes to dodge some attacks.

Well I didn't get called a faggot for once like earlier but I do feel bad when someone makes a point of my bad manners.

>you're just top percentage
No, I'm a shitter actually. Decent at best. but I know the proper strategies for everything in the game. I'll give you the examples for the ones you mentioned:

>Ancient Dragon.
There is this very specific spot between the toes of one of his back legs. If you stay there he will get tricked in using his fire breath under his belly but it wont reach you. I don't remember the details but you just can't lose by using this strategy. You can kill him in 20 seconds with a high damage weapon. That's the cheese tactic. Before that I tried killing him legitimately. I had only 5 Vigor because I do low health builds since long lifebars trigger my autism. I tried killing him at least 50 times with all forms of equipment. Heavy, dex, ranged, combined but never could. I got squished many times or burned but never experienced this "fart of death" In the end I just cheesed him with that strat I mentioned. You can find youtube videos where people kill him on NG+18 with bare fists using that strat. They are 15-20 minute videos. No farts of death.

>Cathedral Drake
The strategy here is: The drake is asleep. If you run to him while he is doing his wake up animation he won't do the fire attack. If you are too slow or get distracted by the enemies and he wakes up you can reload the area. Otherwise if he is already awake you can use red burr and flash sweat but even then it does massive damage and let's assume you are low level. I actually ran without dealing with the enemies and I think he does friendly damage I don't remember but it was quite intense dealing with him and then the enemies that caught up to me just when I killed him. Yes the fire can reach beyond its visual range but that's normal. If you sit somewhere near a fire you would notice the heat emanate far beyond the flame cont.

Souls 1 and 2 are iffy for replay value. I'm talking strictly PVE here.

Souls 1 has strict levelling where you have to start a new character from scratch if you make a mistake. there's also few builds: STR, DEX, INT and FTH. A character that uses any combo is easy enough to make if you go full retard on grinding and by then you eliminated another build on the same character because he can be great at both at once. SL1 doesn't count because it's a challenge, not a build. After that, there's not much else to do but do NG+ on one of those characters to re-experience the world (which unfortunately falls apart after O&S).

Dark Souls 2 in comparison has more builds, but it's also easier to level. The addition of more weapon types, weapons in general, powerstancing and respeccing has made having more 1 character fairly obsolete (speaking for myself I have 4 DS1 characters but only 1 DS2 character). there's more incentive to try out cool gear and builds because it's far more fluid and lots more equipment combos that are viable ie: you can progress well as I don't class doing bollocks damage and taking 2 hours to chip away at a boss to be viable.

On the other hand, Ds2 just doesn't have the charm of DS1, so it kinda falls through... right at the start. I find that, for PVE, both games' replay value kinda falls stone dead after a few replays. I used to get megahype for a replay, but now that I feel I've discovered everything, I haven't touched either in almost a year.
>>
>>315789016
continuing. with >>315791723
If the flame is intense enough you can get burned from quite afar even if you are not in the "flame itself" so I give fire attacks a free pass on that one.

>The mimics in DaS2
Those were designed by the developer to be and insta death if you get touched anywhere, no matter what. That's just how it is. The mimics are a kind of DPS check in Dark Souls 2. You have to kill them before they do their wake up animation or keep your distance. I don't know if you can survive it if you have enough vigor I do low vigor builds like I mentioned so I have stats elsewhere and I can use all kinds of weapons. I have never been killed by a mimic because I kill them before they wake up. I've killed some after by keeping my distance. Once you understand their insta kill purpose you just know to keep a distance during wake up. Same goes for the Ogre and pursuer blade, you have to position yourself properly. I know Pursuer's moveset to perfection I just back up or to the side, not dodge when he does his grab attack. Never got hit. Except in the beginning.

tl:dr: If you know all the ways to avoid the annoying stuff you will, like you can probably guess, never experience them. Hence not get annoyed and enjoy the game whether it had bullshit moments or not.

Let's chalk it up to rng in the AI then. Maybe some stuff got fixed in SotFS too. I remember the executionner's chariot hitting me inside the alcoves in the original game, but it never happened in SotFS.

I don't know about you, but I'm a programmer. I understand the technical aspect behind these problems and I don't blame them. Hitboxes are a pain to do properly and quickly get resource intensive. I just wish they had designed the game a bit more adapted to them. Getting rushed certainly didn't help. I wonder if there's a way to actually display the hitboxes, it could be pretty interesting. I know the unreal engine can do it, no idea what DaS2 uses though.

>>315793142
I suppose I can give a pass to the flames as well. For the mimics, I do agree about them being designed as an insta kill. I just wish they had animations in between "beign a chest" and "getting chewed on". IMO most of these would feel a lot less bullshit if they added animation and particle effects. The ogre could just reach out to you, the pursuer coudl just turn and move toward you. Nothing big, just making the models follow the hitboxes a bit more.

What do you meant?
He's the one who started the DaS2 development, and he's doing it for almost a year before he was removed and replaced by Shibuya.
Shibuya only have his hand on the development for less than 4 month before the game is completely scrapped and Tanimura were appointed as a director to salvage the project.

Anything early, or before the scrapping process, are all Miyazaki's.

>>

Who saved it? Miyazaki? Maybe by putting Tanimura in charge and then supervising. In the end they managed to put together in half the original dev time a game that got deservingly game of the year. Not to mention with the most content in Souls game to date. So the gameplay wasn't as polished and some bad design choices didn't get the chance to get scrapped. So what.

Yes. Dark Souls 2 should have been a step forward, but it was a step to the side instead. I'm hoping they'll address the things that DaS 2 should have.

The dragon dudes bow and then you fight the drakekeepers. Are you summoning people? If you are the dragon guys don't consider it a duel anymore, it's an invasion of their Shrine.

You better watch a video on how it's exactly pulled off because it has some more details to it than that.

Well if it's Scholar it's even easier than Vanilla. I hope you noticed the dragon guards just bow they don't attack until you get to the last one at the top most stair. Then you just run fast, hall hella ass, you dodge like a pro and when you get near the dragon they will fall back.

No, it's actually a good feature since there's a few rare spots where you can get stuck falling in place, not have anything nearby to kill you and unable to darksign.

It's like Halo 1's system where you fall for an amount of time and just die.

Imagine your character being stuck falling forever and having to delete and remake it.

Coincidentally, the people that hate on proper, functional hyper armor or poise are big fans of DaS2 PvP, in which you get a free 2 hit stunlock to do about 70% total health damage to your enemy. I'm sure this was done on purpose so casual players got a bit of an advantage.

Well, congratu-fucking-lations. DaS3 seems to have the same shit where you get 2 free hits and there's only "poise" for Greatsword attacks. Fucking FromSoft.
