I've been playing it for a few years now and all i can say is to play more with the mindset to improve, not to win and winning will come naturally after youre playing good.
Also watch pro players playing, I basically mastered antimage after analysing 4~games

I can't tell if HotS is a success or not. There doesn't really seem to be evidence to either side.
It's not popular like Dota 2 and LoL, but I don't know if any game can live up to that popularity.
