Don't know about how Alex plays in SFV but in III he was supposed to be a new "standard" archetype like shotos so Capcom's idea of that was to essentially make him a hybrid of all types of play.
He has quarter circle, half circle, and dragon punch-motion specials, charge moves, and an SPD.

Capcom is working with Sony's sports division to help create the SF5 league. Red Bull was the first company to jump in but they've got a bunch of Sony's sports partners ready to start putting in money next year.

You did pretty decently If I may offer some basic advice:
Work on connecting your normals into hayate (dash punch) more. General rule of thumb is you can connect a normal into a hayate of the same power (light punch into light hayate, fierce into fierce, etc).
Keep your eyes open for more chances to karakusa (command grab). That's where a lot of the damage and stun can come from. A j.lp or j.lk have ridiculously low hitstun, so you can hit them with it and by the time you're back on the ground they recover faster than theyd expect and you can karakusa them safely.
Starting out just doing a karakusa into hp into hayate will be fine. You already have karakusa into ultra down.
ex karakusa also has one hit of super armor on it, you might catch someone off guard, but dont try it too much.
s.mp is an amazing button and has a bigger hitbox than you'd expect.
Try to avoid jumping too much as well utilize your dashes and focuses. You can use your air axe kick to make your jump somewhat safe but still be careful.
And the number one thing new Makotos have trouble with is accidentally getting up-punch instead of hayate. Be very mindful of if you're buffering forward. A normal up-punch has no ground hitbox on it, so you'll be completely vulnerable.
