3DS-tan (for me, ideally) lies in some strange spectrum of tomboy/reverse-trap. I love tomboys and reverse-traps, and it's difficult to get that right balance of femininity and masculinity when the character is androgynous but still totally a girl. She can look, play, and act like a boy, but is still very much a girl. "Boyish girl" is just a weird thing to say, and it's a difficult thing to capture in appearance alone because a lot of what I have in mind is based on personality.

I think a big part of tan design is personality. Sure, a simple but catchy design makes emulation easier, but an interesting personality makes it a more appealing thing to do.
That is, simplicity makes people ABLE to copy you, but a good personality makes them WANT to.

It's really about trying to build a good work ethic. I find that if you draw a little of it everyday, it's much less stressful and better than a marathon every few days or weeks.

They both have that same great Nintendo Flavor, but both had different personalities. WiiU-tan was more adult, or motherly in a sense, with that whole /ss/ milfy kind of character.
SNES-tan was more casual and laid back, closer to a "girl next door" kind of character as someone once described it. She's your childhood friend, not a cougar who wants to pounce you when you press the power button. Also, brodere is best dere.
Also, speaking of WiiU vs SNES, there was few gags here and there of SNES getting jealous over WiiU getting PC's attention. Of course, Genesis is always around to keep her busy anyway.

It's not for everyone, but it's really grown on me. Before I saw that version I kinda had my own in mind for it, but never was able to draw her well or ever fleshed her out completely.
There's a neat DS Lite design floating around, but I consider the two different individuals.
