It was a resounding meh. It has that dungeon crawler style that was so popular with H-games for a while. Very grindy and the strategy element and the Tank/DPS/Healer with a ton of different units you would never use because they are poorly balanced and you just end out using the objective best ones. And trust me because of the 9 units you can bring you only control 1 and the other 8 are dumb as bricks with your healers attacking instead of healing and your melee attackers pinging away with weakass magic.
You've probably already played this but Kamidori is great for gameplay. So is ROBF/S4U, and MGQ paradox for RPG's. Eroico or Kurovadis is a good platformer. Another Alicesoft game Big Bang Age is a lot like Sengoku Rance but more difficult.

Every enemy commander battle except Xavier can be beaten easily without any grinding whatsoever. Even first Xavier is fairly simple to do without much effort.
Second Xavier is an absurd difficulty spike, and the pair of Kentarou and Rance being fairly fragile doesn't help. Not only that, but only one nation has Diviners, and they get absorbed by another nation if you don't get them fast enough.
