Obviously doesn't stand the test of time if it can't be judged now, and certainly not the "best game ever made".
I've only finished it 4 times. Music and atmosphere can stand test of time i think.

Vastly overrated. Not bad, as far as turn based RPGs of the time go, but not really spectacular.

More cliche than empty, plus doing their quest makes them more interesting

It's just a different take on the light/dark world mechanics, do something here to change something there. It actually adds flavor to the gameplay

It was the last great JRPG bfore PS1 plagued the genre with overly lengthy animations, transition screens, loading times and all the other padding of technical nature.
