Eh, I'm not really getting the massive hype surrounding it but it's a pretty good game with offbeat, sometimes-funny-sometimes-dark writing and an interesting battle gimmick. It lasts about 5-6 hours for a single playthrough, give or take. There's room for multiple playthroughs but personally I'm not sure if I feel like playing it again.
It's worth $10 I think. Especially considering the cards are selling for an overly high price for some reason so you can easily make $3-$4 back in Steam funbux.

I respect this game a lot, but can the endless praise please take a break? It's not perfect by any means. While it succeeds in using its gameplay to convey its themes it doesn't succeed everywhere.
Firstly, the visual style feels like a confused mishmash of retro graphics with disregard for quality in a lot of places. Some sprites are pretty, others clash and make the game look unfinished.
Secondly, the dialogue is on-the-nose and the game doesn't seem to know what subtlety means. Every fourth-wall break and every joke is explicitly dropped to the player with no regard for tasteful discretion. This kind of makes the game feel like it's trying too hard to be a randumb memefest.
The moments involving gameplay are great. But the dialogue and story on its own is lackluster.

A lot of the fun of boss fights is the dialogue. While they do have new mechanics, they're usually not challenging. What keeps you entertained throughout the boss fight is the dialogue and the context in relation to the story.

In the same way that Homestuck was named as a somewhat synonymous reference to Earthbound, Undertale is somewhat synonymous with Cave Story
Two areas are similar to two of the first three Lands introduced. As a bonus, the name of the track that plays in the Hotlands is even "Another Medium".
"Megalovania" returns after being used in an animation in Homestuck. An animation in which a god awoke and stopped a monster with time powers and a fallen hero murdered someone who was their friend.
"Megalovania" is originally from Toby/Radiation's Earthbound hack. Its appearance in Undertale is not only a reference to that hack's twisted story, but his own Totaka's Song.
A few enemies are based on the trolls. Aaron seems to be based on Equius and Pyrope is directly named after Terezi. While Temmie most likely isn't based on Nepeta, her interaction with Aaron seems to be based on such.
Undyne seems to be inspired by Vriska and Meenah.
One of the monsters in the MTT Resort lobby is a white dog with long black hair and red shoes, likely referencing Jade, who in her god tier form has red shoes and is fused with her white dog.
Some of the characters have a unique font and quirk attributed to them (ie. Sans with all lowercase letters and using Comic Sans ( or Sans serif) font, Papyrus speaking in All Caps in the Papyrus font), which sometimes aren't used when things get serious.

You can complete a playthrough in four or five hours. I did full pacifist, and explored lots of things, and it took me about eight hours to get the True End. The game does do the Earthbound thing where you can explore the world after final battle, and talk with all of the characters, with them having something new to say.
Try the demo. If you enjoy it, you'll like the rest of the game.

I can definitely see some of these references, but some of them are just reaching. Like Undyne, or Papyrus' and Sans' quirks being based on trolls.
And even the enemies are pretty innocuous references, if you don't know about Homestuck they seem just like regular jokes, much like everything else in the game.

Undertale being one man effort definitely affects all the 10/10 reviews it is getting, but there is more to it than that.
It is short game, and packed very tightly with jokes and nice content. The things it sets out do, it does very well, and because it's easy enough that you don't need to grind, you don't get bored. If you play normally and get few levels, bosses are become very easy, which is reviewers like.
And the first ending that you get ends on very high note, with game then encouraging you to try doing things different, with True Ending being nice and heart-warming experience.
Only when you start exploring more, or going into Genocide route, does the game get frustrating and hard at points.
The good reviews are totally understandable, but I wish people would look into it more.

flowey pops up several times throughout the game and you'd have to be pretty oblivious to miss them since he's so brightly colored
It's $10 for a game with a fair amount of replayability that comes as close as anything to replicating the feelings one gets while playing EarthBound/Mother 3, although I would argue that it's more effective than those games in some ways.
The gameplay itself isn't terribly deep, but it's a fun ride.

Just played it for about 50 minutes. Dialogue is alright to kind of funny, the puzzles aren't very inventive or funny so far, and the random encounters are already getting quite dull. I downloaded it through this link, can confirm is 100% legit and I have not been infected with malware of any kind.
I saw the circlejerking going on, tried it, played it, and can't say it was a particularly good ride.
I've played worse games, but Undertale isn't very fun.
It's uninspiring to play and look at. With such innovative ideas as good vs bad choices, sliding puzzles, and "silly but actually deep" plot and dialogue, I couldn't help but get bored of playing despite the game's decent pacing and frequent gameplay mix-ups.

Honestly, I'd say the game doesn't hit all of the high points I'd like it to, but it's not a bad game in the slightest. It got a bit tedious to do the same shit to spare enemies, and the inventory system could of been handled better I feel, but otherwise I can't think of any outstanding flaws in the game. Most of the jokes hit their markexempting the text gag in Hotlands that doesn't ever seem to stop, the graphics are passable, and the music is pretty good. 8/10, would pirate again.
The only threads left on /v/ about it are just whining that it exists.

I've never seen a game trigger /v/ this hard, too many people either got butthurt that it beat MGS on Metacritic (as if that means anything, seriously, why do you people care about reviews at all) or they judged a book by its cover and got tricked into thinking LE TUMBLR SJW MEME GAME.
Point is, I'm sad that it had to be this way but I had a lot of fun playing the game and discussing the game in the first week or so before it all went wrong.
