Head wounds and leg wounds were the most common in medieval combat.
Leg wounds because legs are very difficult to armor effectively without reducing mobility, and only with full plate turning someone into a medieval cybernetic organism is it practical at all to leave the legs that vulnerable.
Heads because even with a helmet and all its padding a good knock could disorientate or render unconscious, as well as slipping a thin blade even an inch past eye slits/holes would end a fight. Without a helmet then the head becomes the quickest and surest way to incapacitate or kill an opponent, and is a much easier target to hit with a melee weapon than with a crossbow or firearm.
Torsos, on the other hand, are very easy to effectively armor and can take a lot of punishment without being crippling or immediately deadly. A simple padded jack or buff coat provided excellent protection, and stepping from there to mail or brigandine (the stuff that gets mistaken for studded leather because there are plates riveted on the inside of a leather coat) is even better. Helmets needed a lot of padding, and needed to be metal to provide any sort of adequate protection whatsoever.

Yeah yeah yeah, we have now gone from the myth that full plate makes someone a turtle incapable of moving to it being so well distributed they can do gymnastics.
It was exhausting to wear it. Even well distributed it was exhausting. Yeah, you can do cartwheels, and even a light jog or jump, but you will be over heated and wanting to die far, far sooner than the guy who is just wearing a padded jack. The trade off for that exhaustion and over heating is that you effectively become a walking god and you only need to wear it a few hours at most. Even with weapons designed with piercing or bashing that armor in it was a difficult prospect to pull off reliably, and even lesser armored people will find themselves exhausted as well quite quickly in a battle when all their adrenaline has been running its course for too long and they have been fighting in a press for their lives.
