I liked how dungeons and dragons handled their beast/monstrous races for the most part. Know furries tend to dislike them as well because they tend to have that more "serious" look I guess. Alot better then that goofy-looking disney-eque characters furries tend to go for.

There just aren't any civilized beast races to begin with in that game. Hence, part of the problem.
I'd love a Red XIII/Sif-style race where you could get away with no human features at all. Even realistic humanoid animals are still humanoid which is waaaay overdone. People imagine crazy detailed worlds, but can't picture anything other than bipedal lifeforms.
None, to my knowledge, are bold enough to allow them to have any significant gameplay differences or take advantage of their sexy tails.
Beast races unfortunately serve as nothing but furbait for the most part.

Yeah, but a big part of the reason the beast races are uncivilised is because social attitudes towards them are extremely negative and so they're constantly pitted against the enlightened races. If you suddenly had say an Owl beastrace walking around all of the cities and being totally integrated with the rest of society then it kinda makes the whole racism against beastmen angle that is a core facet of the setting utterly collapse.
You have some occasional exceptions in certain individuals and Goblins by not waging war constantly are generally treated better relatively, but the reality of how it has to be is that either they're all ok or none of them are.

I'm sure devs could think of something. Being bipedal/having a two arms/two legs upright setup isn't the only way to be able to manipulate tools. Even something unconventional like a spider that uses front feelers or something with a long, controllable tail/tongue.

Yeah, Goblins are the most accepted race. And even then they're only allowed to visit as merchants and are still distrusted by the majority of the population.

No, the Sylphs are seen as non-aggressive which is very different. Of course you have splinter groups like the little Solace tribe which some people such as the Scions get along with but for the most part Sylphs are seen as dangerous and kill people on sight, they just keep to themselves and only retaliate rather than initiate.

The Au Ra potentially have slightly iffy social connotations due to them having partial dragon ancestry, I would imagine Ishgard aren't huge fans of them for that reason. However they aren't a beast race and are generally accepted by the other enlightened races of Eorzea.
I guess that insect race in Dark Sun was sort of different. Having four arms but not being able to wear normal armor.Why can't we have lizardmen holding stuff with their tails too

It makes you specialise your character which doesn't happen anymore for some reason, but it'd be great to have an unconventional character like two legs/no arms that's strongly in touch with magic. No choice for physical classes but great for magic/range. Limited clawing with feet or a bite or something like that in a pinch. I don't know, most games these days let you do what you want with any character so it wouldn't happen.

Oddworld got you covered. Vykkers, Glukkons, they're all interesting. Glukkons have both arms and legs, but their reliance on technology and industry made them lazy, and their legs eventually evolved to shrivel since they didn't go outside. They wear huge suits that cover their shoulders to the ground, and under that they walk on their hands. With legs they'd be 15-20 feet tall, even just walking on their hands they're 8 feet-ish.

This thread is relevant to my interests since I'm working on some beast races for a personal project of mine, and I want some feedback in fact.
How would you classify a good beast race?
This thread has actually made me rethink some design concepts. I really like some of the FFTA people mentioned. I kinda wanna have that level of creativity in the designs for some of the races.
Anyway, yeah, what's a good race, and what's a bad race? In terms of design.
I've got some ideas, but I'll post what I've worked on.
Some of the must be races are:
-Bird People similar to Harpies
-Merpeople that aren't mermaids (tails)
-Ape-people, these would be the most human
-Moth-like Elf fairies
Everything else is up in the air as for what else could be added.
I kinda wanna have Kitsune, and I was thinking of a slug-like race that was fat and pudgy, but also kinda like the Majin in DB.
I was also thinking of 4 armed demons, kinda like the Islam Ifrit, but with Horns and red skin
Dragonfolk too, scaly reptiles that breathe fire
Anyway, I'll just post art and see what /v/ says. What they like, what they don't etc...

I don't know too much about design, but off the top of my head.
1. They should have clear ties to the world and its history. Go a little easy on the quantity and flesh them out.
2. Try not to fall too far into making them exactly like humans in ideology or physiology.
3. Design links/conflicts between them, hatred or racism...maybe an old grudge due to some long past events.
4. They need to have some traits, physical and mental/cultural that prevent a human of x ethnicity for just taking their spot.

It depends on what you're going for. In general though, I would try to veer away from very human designs unless there is a good reason, like say....a god designing everything, or maybe a race being born from a curse when they were originally human...or some such.

Pretty much, if you want a bird race you need to include all the main features of birds. Not just wings but also feathers, beaks and shit.
But if you want to go for more humanoid harpies your design isn't bad. There's always problem with races looking too similar to ones from different franchises thpigh, so if you went with all the shit I said without being too creative it'd probably look like this. >>291401361

I think my biggest problem right now is number 1, I have wayyyy too many, and I'm designing too many ideas. I've got like a list of 20, and have drawn like half, but I'm still not entirely sure what to use.
2. Yeah, this is why I took interest in this thread. I think some will be human-like, like the Kitsune for example which make sense to be attractive and human-like, but I think that having some variety in the other races will make the more human-like stand out more.
I was also thinking of extending the features of humans to include different shades of skin, horns, elf ear and such that way the straight up, elves dwarves, and giants from typical lore are essentially human thus giving me more variety in design for the humans, and more freedom in other races since I kinda fill that urge to include "the elf" and "the dwarf"
3 and 4 are covered, it's for a comic, so I think the deciding factor in which races to include will be determined by their relevance to the story. The biggest and most important part in all that will be this.
Which in turn makes the bird race, and the moth-fairies the most important thus far.

Honest that was one of the things I was debating in terms of design. I wasn't entirely sure what to do just yet.
Only thing that's certain as of now, is that all of the races derrive from the 5 elements:
Fire
Water
Air
Earth
Aether
With some being more creature-like, and others more humanoid. I try to derive from actual folk-lore and such, but I also don't wanna do the typical. It's a paradox I guess. Still figuring things out.
With the merpeople it's kinda hard, since I find some of the best concept (though the designs are meh) with that is in One Piece.

Is someone ever going to make an RPG or what have you where you play as insectoids, snakes or birds? I don't think so. Curved backs are standard for humanoid races (if you have a perfectly straight back, you're fucked up).
Huge tails like that should be extensions of the body, instead of just tacked on like a lot of artwork portrays them to be. We're talking about a limb thicker and heavier than anything else on the body; it needs support.
This also means that for races with big tails like that, their legs would be pushed out to the side to accommodate it. And THAT is why all reptilian races (should) have wonderful hips.
