There's no even comprehensible reason we should be caring about them. New laptops are sold without disc drives and have been for years now my computer hasn't had a disc drive since 2005, it's obsolete.
The internet is easier, faster and smoother for most consumers downloading/installing programs. For anything else, a USB thumb drive is like 4$ for 16gb now at a store, which means they're probably less than 1$ to make.

the only reason I don't is because I don't have a way to neatly arrange another SATA power cable up there, and I'd probably almost never use the fucking thing anyway. If I want to watch a movie there's a usually a streaming service or at least a torrent for it, if I want to install a large file that's what the internet is for. Blu-Ray is just the first optical storage medium that will be made obsolete by the internet.

Blu Ray were extermly expensive when they first launch, people are poor fucks. They just stuck with their DVD/CD drives instead. It's much cheaper to bundle your laptop without disk drive or dvd then a Blu ray drive.
External hard drive, lack of bundle blu-ray drives, Broadband internet, Digital Content is what killed Bluray drive. The primary weakness of Bluray is their specialized drives to read and write content on Discs. External usb hard drives are great is to carry around, and storage stuff into . Even through Discs are the cheapest for storage, you have to buy a drive AND the disc which can as much as a 1tb drive.

Yknow, why don't they look into this as an option? A fucking 32gb or 64gb flash drive would be enough for most games these days, even the LOLSOHUEG ones and would likely be cheaper and easier to ship in bulk than CDs, if you take into account the burning process, extra space costs and whatnot.
Also, as far as "Seven" discs, if we're assuming 7 4gb DVDs, that's "only" 28gb, which is average these days, some of the higher ones are upwards of fucking 50gb now.
Not that I give a shit either way, I've played 2 GTAs ever and only 4 was fun as more than just a random murder simulator
