I've always wanted to go to Japan for obvious reasons, but recently I've been way more interested in the general culture of the nation and non-vidya related things involving Japan. Aside from that though, anyone go and get some cool games? Go to a cool arcade somewhere? There was a thread about Japan last night and I kinda wanna hear more stories of peoples trips.
>>
Home consoles are dying in japan

That I do know about, I'm pretty sure Its a space issue? Handhelds obviously are on top because of train commuting.

>Arcades
Unless you like the smell of cigarettes, forget it. My friends and I passed up tons of arcade because smoking was allowed in 90% of them. And the 10% that were smoke free had shit selections.

I picked up a Super Famicom with a bunch of Super Famicom games, some with a mint box and manual and everything. Retro gaming over there seems to be far more appreciated than America. I even managed to pick up a boxed copy of my favorite game, Thousand Year Door.

Ask me anything you want, I went very recently for 2 weeks, one half spent in Kyoto, the other half in Tokyo.
>>
Nerd-out in Akiba or Denden Town. The otaku shit is great but if you go to Japan to do just that you're doing yourself a huge disservice.

Kobe and Osaka were my favourite places, the latter is pretty romantic, especially the Spice Garden.

>>288446050
Smoking indoors is quite common in Japan, especially in bars. If you're a pussy like this guy you should probably harden the fuck up.
>>
I've been working at a ski resort in Japan for the past 4 months. Soooo many gaijin.

That been said, at least in Sapporo its pretty common to see salarymen in their 50's playing handhelds/phone games on trains and such. So can confirm that one. One time i saw a guy who looked old enough to be my dad playing a horse racing simulator on his vita that also had cute anime girls in it. If that gives you an idea of whats going on over here.

Arcades are cool as shit but my japanese is well limited so i havnt mustered up the balls to actually try that gunslinger game that literally looks like the best thing ever. Japanese drum hero whatever is easy and fun though, that shit's my jam.
>>
>>288446189
>If you're a pussy like this guy
Are you somehow implying that an awful smell should be tolerable inside an establishment? I'll never understand Japan's obsession with smoking and drinking, they've got plenty of other cool stuff to do besides that.
>>
>>288445864
well if I'm on /v/ its video games and anime.
>>
>>288446050
Is Kyoto way more comfy that Tokyo? It seems to be that way. Also while on Kyoto, did you see the Nintendo HQ?
>>
>>288446245
I've seen videos of the drum hero stuff, it looks insane. I'd defiantly go for it before you leave!
>>
>>288447206
>Is Kyoto way more comfy that Tokyo?
Kyoto definitely felt way more comfy in my opinion. We rented out a traditional hotel for an entire week, and it felt absolutely great. Just 4 bros sitting around on a Tatami mat and watching a small as fuck TV in the corner. It felt great.

I tried my damned hardest to find out where the Nintendo head quarters were located, but we just couldn't get any directions to it. We did end up going to lots of cool places, Nara being one of my favorite.
>>
>>288447329
Ive already played it many times. It's great. They update the playlist with like, seasonal and promotional songs as well. And occasionally they give prizes for high scores.
>>

>>
>>288447885

>>

>>
I'll be moving to Chiba in May. Can't wait, but I'm scared as shit at the same time.
>>
>>288448378
I got a 6 month working holiday visa but ill probably extend it out. I basically came exclusivly for the jaPOW and yakiniku. So if i can work next season as well, that'd be a blast.

That been said, wouldnt want to live here, that'd suck. Too many rules for my liking. Plus being white here means you are always treated as gaijin. Which is fine, i understand and respect that, having random dudes take photos with me because i have a slavic nose got old after about a week though.
>>
>>288446245

So you can work at a place like a ski resort without knowing much Japanese?
>>
>>288446050
what is the most comforting thing a person of color can do in japan
>>
>>288445542
The japanese console market shrunk considerably over the last several years. The PS3/360 really caught Japan off guard. Studios folded, unable to keep up with the bigger, more demanding budgets. Then the smartphone sucker punch'd them with cheap games that can be played on the go.
>>
>>288448793
Do you know Japanese? Why did you make the leap to move?
>>
>>288449232
No wonder console games are shit nowadays. We'll never get the PS2 ever again.
>>
>>288449046
Holy shit, it really is still that bad when it comes to white people?
>>
>>288449132
At least where i work, I'd estimate that 90% of gaijin don't know any japanese when they get here. I knew my hiragana and katakana and how to say 'i love beer'. If that gives you an idea.
>>
>>288449380

Yes, I do. My girlfriend and I got married, and I decided I wanted to live there with her, rather than living here in America. What can I say, after vacationing in Japan several times I fell love with the place. I've got a spouse visa, so there's no limit as to how long I can stay.
>>
>>288449462
>white
if you're outside the country you'll be treated as gaijin, no matter what color
this ofcourse is just generalizing, I'm sure foreigners can have a great time there without being treated like some kind of apartheid creature

it also helps not to take everything here for granted and go figure out for yourself
>>
>>288449523
how'd you meet you her?
>>
>>288449523
Well shit, good for you man. Wouldn't want to live there though, I love netherlands too much. Plus abe a shit. But lets not get political
>>
>>288449462
Nah it's not bad. It's just like, everyone is Japanese. I'm not. If i do anything culturally stupid, then im baka gaijin.

The key is to not do anything stupid and be super polite all the time.
>>
>>288449645
>it also helps not to take everything here for granted and go figure out for yourself

pfffff I wish, that's why I made the thread. School loans and shit, I'll never make it to Nipland ;-;

Truth be told it was language exchange. I know it sounds kind of lame, meeting on the internet at first, but we hit it off real quick. She even confessed to me, saying "am I the only one you will ever want".

Afterwards we decided to meet in person. I flew there a couple of times, met her parents. They were pretty chill but didn't speak a word of English. Our relationship blossomed pretty quickly, and I eventually proposed to her.

I'm a guy who's been living in Japan for 8 years now. Married, etc.

Just about what anybody says about Japan is hyperbole, and that goes for the good and the bad. Japan is a very nice place to live. The arcades are a blast, it's extremely fun if you're into manga and gaming, and most people are very nice.

Yes, you'll always be treated as a 'foreigner', but what do you expect from such a homogeneous society? They don't see foreigners very often, so it's going to be jarring for them of course. If you don't make it a big deal, they won't.
>>
>>288449724

Thanks man. I know living in Japan will be different from vacationing, so there will no doubt be sobering experiences. Oh, and I agree with you on Abe.

Where in Chiba will you be?

I'm in Chiba City near Chiba Station.
>>
>>288449981

Thanks bro. I couldn't believe how much they liked me. I spoke in some broken ass Japanese but they seemed to be impressed, even giving their blessings to our marriage. That or they were just being their usual polite Japanese selves, and not telling the truth. But I had a good time, and I have a feeling they were genuine.
>>
>>288446465
People who smoke do so because tobacco is a stimulant. It's an enjoyable experience and I don't even do it that often because of the health risks created by the absurd canceriffic cigs that are so common.

if you can't get used to a little tobacco smoke you're a pussy, hands down. Same as you would be if you couldn't get used to the smell of stale beer or many of the other vagaries you see in bars or nightclubs.

The world does not exist to make you comfortable and happy, learn to take the good with the bad.
>>
>>288449958
Holy shit nice!

I have to ask then, how long did it take to become fluent in Japanese and how did you find a job that wasn't teaching English? I'm getting a degree in Computer Networking if that helps at all in Japan currently. I would honestly move there if I liked it after a vacation. It just seems so fucking comfy.
>>
>>288450086

Cool, I'll be living in Abiko-Shi. Tell me, how do you like it? How are you getting along?

I'm learning a bit of Japanese in prep for a short trip at the end of the year.

I know it's pretty tried, I'm sure, but games and anime and shit make it seem pretty cool, and I'm eager to see what it's really like.
>>
>>288450359
sounds neat, I'll keep that in mind
I was thinking of visiting again and sit on beaches at night(went to osaka 8 years ago) with my telescope to see some stars
can't see squat here in europe
>>
>>288450221
I still teach English, actually. The key is to find those small schools that aren't affiliated with any large corporation because they're much more relaxed.

Don't plan to teach forever, but I'll probably do it for another 2 or 3 years, maybe. No reason to stop right now because my workload is incredibly light, and my boss is a super nice guy who pays for half of our rent because I'm like a son to him.

As for learning Japanese, the key to that is to obviously just take any opportunity to practice it. Never turn down a chance to communicate because you're nervous or shy. As long as you don't actively forgo studying and communicating, you'll just naturally pick it up.
>>
>>288450440

Mostly everyone there speaks English as a second language. Of course there's always Tomoko from the sticks who probably can't speak a word of it, but I imagine you'll be going to places like Tokyo.
>>
>>288445275
I live an hour from Tokyo. Place has a really rad live music scene, check that out.
>>
>>288450605

How hard is it to get an English teaching job there? I haven't applied yet.
>>
>>288450660
I wouldn't go as far as to say everyone speaks English. They study it in school but it's basically the same as when kids are forced to study Spanish in the US. Most of them won't use it and forget it as soon as they graduate.
>>
>>288450689
How do you even begin to explore Tokyo. From what I've read and seen in maps, it seems like it's its own country.
>>
>>288450297
Ah, okay. You're nowhere near me, unfortunately.

You have Steam? Maybe we can hang out in Tokyo if we ever have some free time. I can introduce you to one of my gaming friends, but he's usually pretty busy.
>>
>>288450758
Yeah but when you see pictures of Japan all of the signs and shit are all in English. If they don't know it how the fuck do they even get around. That sounds like a stupid question but it seems like everything over there is written in English.
>>
>>288449874

Anon who moved to japan a couple weeks ago here.

>Bloodbourne is being hyped as fuck around akiba.
>Portables aren't as common as you'd think since smart phones (sumaho) are probably more common than flip phones (galake) now so everything plays mobile games or reads manga on trains
>Game centres are mostly UFO and rhythm games
>Tablets are huge followed by laptops. Desktops are pretty uncommon (judging from availability of parts)

Anything else?
>>
>>288450660
That's not even true. Most people here don't know any English at all aside from "I'm sorry" or "Nice to meet you." Things like that.

They study it in in school, but they immediately forget it when they graduate.

>>288450737
Stupidly easy. All you need is a 4-year degree of any kind, but having an actual English degree or teaching minor is a big plus. Most people who come here just have some random degree and are only here for a year or two before they go back home.
>>
>>288449462
You'll always be a gaijin. Though it's really not THAT much of a big deal as long as you're cool and can at least speak to them. Japanese tend to be really shy around foreigners especially because of the cultural and language differences.

Except Roppongi I guess where everyone's either a gaijin or a foreign-cock-hungry slut.
>>
why most gaijins live in Tokyo
>>
>>288450889
Come on now, Anon. There's no English signs that don't have Japanese on them, as well. The only signs that are purely English are the ones done so for stylish advertising reasons, basically.
>>
>>288450660
Tokyo, heading southwards over a couple weeks.

Any tips for getting around + finding hotels + having fun etc.?
>>
>>288450943

>>
>>288449981

>>
>>288450889

>>
who nagoya here
>>
>>288445275
yeah man it was sick. I studied abroad in Tokyo for one year living on campus at my university. when I got into my tiny ass dorm room, I quickly learned that the university firewall blocked steam and other fun internet shit. and that's how my story ends. because I wasn't able to play vidya with friends back home, i was forced to do other shit for a whole year, like socialise.
>>
>>288450941
>Bloodbourne is being hyped as fuck around akiba.

The Last of Us was hyped up too. Bloodborne is being super hyped here right now because PS4 is finally getting an actual exclusive. Not even trying to start a console war or anything, but the system has barely had anything to advertise, so they're pushing it hard right now.
>>
>>288450889
It's mostly for tourism purposes. I'm liing in outer tokyo and most shit has english signs but I wouldn't be in the least surprised if there's no english out o the metro area
>>
>>288450941
Lots of people on the train just read normal books as well. Well except for that one guy reading the porn manga.
>>
>>288450774
Plan ahead and do one district at a time, perhaps even one district a day. Like if you wanna hang around Shibuya/Harajuku spend the whole day there, if you wanna visit Akihabara spend a day there, if you wanna chill in Shimokitazawa spend a day there. Part of the charm of Tokyo is getting lost in small streets and finding cool-ass stores, restaurants and cafes.
>>
>>288451052
>>288451086
Yeah but the Jap part is always so small. It almost seems like a big fuck you to their language. It's just the one thing about Japan that has always nagged me.
>>
>>288451076

It was weird, I didn't expect them to accept me so quickly, especially considering how shit my Japanese is. They told me I was an earnest and sincere young man. Hell I don't even have a whole lot of money either, so I expected them to hate that too. You just never know how well it turns out until you actually experience it.
>>
>>288451067

>>
Filthy gaijin here. I'm planning to travel to Japan, more precisely to Tokyo. What are the best neighborhoods to rent a room in a hotel or house? I don't want to spend two hours in a train to reach Shibuya or Akihabara, so I wanna know if there're cheap places in Tokyo to stay.
>>
>>288451303

Wow, it really is that easy. That would be great, because getting a job here in my own country is hard as shit. Anything outside of fucking Walmart or whatever is out of the question.

The hardest part is getting over here. Once you find a job that'll accept out-of-country teachers, you just have to work there for a year, quit, then find a job somewhere else in the country that's closer to where you want to be.

I started in Shizuoka and slowly moved my way closer to Tokyo. Had to work one or two shit schools before finally being here, but oh well.

Yeah, my wife was the same. She's 29 now, but she looks 21. Everybody always asks her if she's a university student.

There's a lot of pressure for people to get married before 30. Since my wife was 27 when we got together, her grandfather was always worried and would jokingly ask her when she's finally going to find a nice guy.

Girls here can be kind of prude until they hit 27 or so. Then, they panic and realize that they wasted all their time being prude and have to get married within 3 years or face slight social stigma.

My older sister taught in Japan, and my brother and I visited her for a week. One day while we were there, we visited an arcade, and ended up playing Initial D against each other. Within 5 minutes we drew a sizeable crowd, all of the Japs watching the two foreigners playing arcade games. I had no idea what they were saying. They were commenting the whole time while me and my Bro insulted and trolled each other. We ended up kinda putting on a show, smashing into each other, boxing the other guy in, etc. while yelling insults and such at each other. We gave them a good laugh, the game ended, and the crowd dispersed, but it was kinda cool.

I thought that the Japs hated foreigners, but the whole time they treated us really well. They were probably racist behind our backs, but whatever. I had fun.

You're right about that, they tend to be prudes before their late 20s. She seems so sincere, kind, loving, everything I could ever want in a woman. She likes me for who I am. People always ask her if she's a university student as well, then again I've gotten the same fucking questions too and I'm also 27.

That 30 year mark is pretty universal, but it seems like it's stressed a lot more in Japan. Maybe I'm just generalizing though. Personal experience and all, not very objective. So is her grandfather a pretty chill guy? What's she like too?

Her grandfather passed away recently, and I never actually met him. She took it really hard because they were pretty close. One of the kanji in her name is from his name, and she often went to him for advice.

She wants to be a baker. She doesn't really have any hobbies right now, but she enjoys reading fantasy books. Her job is shit right now, so she doesn't have a lot of free time. I feel bad for her, so we try to do stuff together on the weekends. I cook for her a lot so she can relax a bit more.

Pay is terrible on mountain for gaijin, afer tax its like 450yen an hour. Not a great place to save money, im probably slightly in the red this season because i bought a set of fat all mountain rockers and ski boots.

That been said, knowing japanese would be a bonus because it means you could get work in hokkoda, furano or some tiny onsen near Aomori where you would have awesome pow and almost exclusivly japanese coworkers.

Ill add that i actually got lucky this season in that i work in a kitchen where eveyone is japanese with next to no english, so my nihongo skills have improved a little. It is therefore possible to get better at the language in niseko, but yeah im probably pretty lucky in that regard.

I recently went with 5 other mates.
Japan was amazing, so much to do, so much to see. We watched Sumo's, went to Mt Fuji's suicide forest, drank heavily (You can drink in public in Japan), all shared a bromantic onsen sesh and visited a cat cafe and a maid cafe. If you're into retro vidya I'd recommend you visit a place called Super Potato, it's in Akihabara, best fucking store ever, bought a whole bunch of retro shit. I'll hang around for a bit if anyone wants to hear more. Pic related, this was on the stairs for one of the floors at Super Potato.

Her grandparents have been dead for years, she misses them greatly though. My wife likes to play some vidya as well, she's a huge movie buff too. Right now she's in management, her job is wearing on her too. How about yours? How are you getting along? I don't mind being an ALT, but I admit, sometimes the job can be a bit tedious.

Get the fuck down to the Kansai area. Best food in the country and you've got Kyoto and Nara for the culture. The people there are more loud, boisterous and friendly too compared to Tokyoites. Architecture-wise I think there are some Tadao Ando buildings there, Church of Light is in Osaka.

Music's pretty alright, DenDen Town has plenty of games and animu things, fashion's passable though. But food and culture? You're set.

It is back behind the main big street. Head out of the station, head towards that huge street, cross it, then go back behind the building on that side. If you buy new, hell yes. But there are tons of places in Japan where you can buy used games for pretty cheap, and they're usually in very nice condition too. I've bought quite a few games from used game shops that look brand new. Hell, one time I found Tales of Vesperia PS3 and it WAS brand new, still in the wrapping, but they had to sell it at a used price because it was at a store for used games.

Whenever I go to Akiba I always leave with more games than I have time to play.
