I think it has something to do with the games themselves he reviews. A lot of the games he reviewed in the early episodes aren't broken by design which actually makes a game bad (confusing graphics, bad controls, etc), so he had an easy time making up material. He now reviews actual broken (unplayable) games which are unnecessary to review because it's a broken game, what more can be said? Also the repetition of the material can only go so far.
But actually looking at a list of episodes now, some of the ones I thought were bad from only a few years ago actually seem funnier because the ones now are so terrible.

We used to have an inside joke in our street that we could always tell when James was editing his films because he would always play heavy metal music at deafening volumes, all the while he was drinking straight spirits heavily. Too many times I can remember being kept up until the early hours of the morning, only to be disturbed by James in the street either screaming hysterically or fighting with his wife.
